Knowing that you probably had a reason that you decided wasn't worth mentioning really isn't helpful...This was my mistake, to not have written all the problems. I use emelFM2 as file manager and it uses LC_* variables to determine the encoding to be used for file names (if not mistaking anything). Now, after having made changes to the locales (emelFM2 was using C locale before, including for it's configuration file), filenames containing peculiar characters (Cyrillic and others) are illisible in the filelist. Moreover, although in debugs emelFM2 determines correctly that LC_ALL indicates en_US.UTF-8, it falls back (I believe) to using C locale instead of the utf-8 one (reads from and saves to config-C instead of config-en_US.UTF-8).As you may have noticed emelfm2 has been removed from the portage tree because it lacks a maintainer. Are you saying that it lacks a maintainer for keeping emelFM2 up-to-date in portage?Sincethisisonegoodtwo-panedependency-lessfilemanager,Icannotunderstandwhyportagedoesn'tprovideusers with it.Isthereanywaytoask portagedevelsto updateregularly emelFM2ebuilds? (As it can be seen in [1], there are people providing ebuilds for each emelFM2 release; couldn't they help maintaining emelFM2 in portage?). I'vetesteditonGentooanditworksin a prettystablemanner (so that ~x86 would largely suffice for version 0.2). The latest ebuild is on bug #90476 [1]. Unlike the latest ebuild in portage that actually has a unicode use flag. Did you use that one [2]? I'm novice enough to Gentoo to not yet master emerging from custom ebuilds. So I build it from source (make make install). I used version 0.2. However, the problem isn't emelFM2 specific. It is more linked to GTK+2 applications. For example, Qalculate! isn't able to display the pi sign (the unicode pi sign). Or Xfce cannot display corefonts (Arial, Tahoma, Verdana). Instead of displaying a unicode character (my guess), it displays anincomprehensible series of numbers. My guess is that it has to be somehow linked to locale, but I cannot see how. I have a fresh 2006.1 Gentoo installation, with a customised kernel having nls_utf8 built-in. The only crucial change that I made was upgrading Xorg to 7.1.Igenerallybuildallmyapplicationswith+nlsflag. Much faster startup and much more reliable in terms of setup anyways I do hate to hear that. I can have the iwpriv settings executed with: iwpriv_ath0=( mode 3 turbo 1 ) and I was told on the madwifi IRC channel that the 108Mbps rate won't actually show up with iwlist ath0 rate because turbo just does rate*2 down the line. I'm still wondering if turbo mode should work with wpa_supplicant and if there is any way to determine if turbo mode is actually functional on my system though. - Grant Out f curiosity, Grant, what brand wifi hardware are you using. [gentoo-user] Xorg 7.0+composite+radeon OSS drivers+radeon9200se : X cpu usage sometimes rockets to 80%
Hi, Today I tried to enable the composite extension on my Xorg. Nice eye candy :) and everything works pretty good. The only problem is that sometimes the CPU usage shots to 80% for intervals of 20-60 minutes (at pretty random intervals, but it seems to me that switching desktops a lot helps the bug to come out) and then quietly settles out. If I kill xcompmgr the CPU usage instantly comes down to almost zero. Restarting composite makes the CPU usage rise again to something like 10-20% (it depends), quite high but bearable. I should be using a fully hw-accelerated Xorg, however. I have an ATI Radeon 9200se card with the following options: [...] Section Device #VideoRam131072 # Insert Clocks lines here if appropriate Identifier ** ATI Radeon (generic) [radeon] Driver radeon Option AccelMethod EXA Option AGPMode 8 Option AGPFastWrite 1 Option BackingStore true EndSection [...] that, according to http://gentoo-wiki.com/TIP_Xorg_X11_and_Transparency , should give most acceleration for my card. What seems strange to me is that the problem happens at random (a misconfiguration should fit better a constant high CPU usage). I am using latest stable 7.0 Xorg. Any idea to help me understand what the problem can be? Thanks, m. -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

Re: [gentoo-user] [OT] RSA Vs DSA keys for SSH authentication
DSA is mathematically stronger than RSA. However, that doesn't mean much since most attacks don't come from attacking the core of the algorithm anyway. Do you mean that an RSA key with twice the number of bits (e.g. 2048 or even higher) is still weaker (i.e. easier to crack) than the DSA key? I know it's all psychological, but in my paranoid state it'll make me feel better . . . :)) I think what he means is that for a given key length, 1024bits in this case, the DSA key is, mathematically speaking, a stronger key. RSA has the advantage of allowing longer key lengths which makes RSA a stronger key, if you use 1024bits key length. But as he also pointed out, most hackers try to find other areas of weakness to exploit so the key strength becomes moot in that case. -Andrew Kay -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

Is there anything wrong with my hardware? Is it a super-block problem? Is there a way to solve it? First, check the dmesg output after running fsck.ext3 /dev/hdd1. That may show read errors on the disk, and if so, I'm guessing those blocks are now bad. You can also use smartctl (emerge smartmontools) to query the SMART information from the drive, or to run a SMART self-test of the disk. I believe you can also convert the filesystem to ext2, with tune2fs -O ^has_journal /dev/hdd1. This should allow you to run fsck.ext2 on the filesystem, to check it for other consistency errors. -Richard -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

That does seem to work with the stubborn The Life of Mammals. I wish I didn't have to mount the DVD before running vobcopy though. vobcopy reads the VOB files directly, rather than reading /dev/dvd as a video source. I suppose a mkisofs command after vobcopy would make for a pretty good process. It works for me. I've used it to copy encrypted DVDs that are 4.3GB. Yeah vobcopy is definitely doing some serious decrypting. After it mirrors The Life of Mammals mplayer and totem can play it, and with dd (or straight from the disc) only VLC could play it. I think I'll use this command to mount, rip, image, and delete: mount /dev/cdrom vobcopy -m -o MOVIE_NAME mkisofs -l -o MOVIE_NAME.iso MOVIE_NAME rm -rf MOVIE_NAME How can I set that up in a script and execute just the script? This is also better for performance because the system won't have to decrypt while it's playing right? - Grant -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
