Well, maybe you're not turn on Window Decoration and Move Window plugins.
 Run ccsm and enable them.
And remember to put emerald --replace in command field of Window

That makes no sense. He's using compiz, kwin cannot run together with compiz

[gentoo-user] eselect data - how to update?

qfile /usr/share/eselect/modules/java-vm.eselect
shows, that it is installed by dev-java/java-config

So, I re-emerged dev-java/java-config and app-admin/eselect
but it's still there.

How to update eselect's data?

Many thanks for a hint,

You cannot have both those packages at the same time.

From the pm-utils ebuild:

$ cat pm-utils/pm-utils-1.2.5.ebuild

[snip]

RDEPEND==sys-apps/hal-0.5.10
=sys-apps/dbus-1.0.0
!sys-power/powermgmt-base

You need to get rid of powermgmt-base somehow or not use pm-utils. The depends
list for pm-utils is:

$ equery depends pm-utils
 * Searching for pm-utils ...
kde-base/powerdevil-4.3.4 (pm-utils ? sys-power/pm-utils)
net-misc/wicd-1.6.2.2 (pm-utils ? =sys-power/pm-utils-1.1.1)
sys-apps/hal-0.5.14 (laptop ? =sys-power/pm-utils-0.99.3)
a...@nazgul ~/downloads/iso/gentoo $ eix powermgmt-base

So I assume you have KDE4 installed.

What package do you have that wants powermgmt-base? (emerge -t helps find
this)

 Thanks for the heads up.
At this point, I'll be happy if I can just get WEP working using WPA

Well, it seems to be something with my home network; not sure what.
Over the holidays I did some traveling and took my laptop with me.
I was able to connect to other WEP networks just fine using WPA Supplicant;
however, when I got home I couldn't get WPA Supplicant to work with my home

had to revert back to setting it up via /etc/conf.d/net.

My home wireless network is a Linksys WRT54G version 3 hardware, with slightly
outdated software (by 1 or 2 releases).
SSID is visible. It seems to find it, but then loses it pretty quickly and I
have to restart wlan0 before I can try again.
Works fine when using a static WEP configuration though (e.g. no WPA

Not sure what to look at next, but this is going to drive me a bit crazy.

[gentoo-user] About gnash and swfdec

Hi guys and girls,

Have you tried gnash or swfdec as alternatives to adobe flash player?
I tried both of them. The high consumption of cpu resource and the
lack of support to SWF version 8-10 are the main disadvantages in my
opinion. And it seems that swfdec hasn't published a new version for
more than a year. Perhaps gnash is our only hope currently?

[gentoo-user] Limit emerge's wget bandwidth usage

2010-01-06 Thread Ricardo Saffi Marques
Is there any way I can configure (pass arguments to) emerge's wget (used for

I don't want to make a global/system-wide change, just for portage.

I did find a way to limit the bandwidth while syncing. All I had to do was to
put this on my /etc/make.conf:

PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS=--partial --progress --delete-after --human-readable
--bwlimit=50

(for instance).

I do know there is parameter for wget, which is --limitrate. Any way I could
set this inside portage?

[gentoo-user] emerging gentoo-sources failing due to file collisions

2010-01-06 Thread Walt Rarus
I've never experienced this phenomenon prior to gentoo-sources-2.6.31.-r6.
I've always emerged gentoo-sources and they peacefully sat there and waited
until I built the corresponding kernel later when I felt like it - if ever.
With 2.6.31-r6, however, the emerge fails and consequently screws up 'emerge

Any recommended workarounds or fixes?

So, KDE is maintaining KDE 3.5? If KDE is/was maintaining KDE 3.5 then
Gentoo would still have it in the tree. If KDE is not supporting KDE
3.5 then Gentoo has to drop it, as things break and develop security
issues. Again, this is not Gentoo's fault for not developing KDE 3.5,
it is KDE that dropped it. What Redhat does most likely won't affect
what Gentoo does. I don't use Redhat but I do use Gentoo.

I'm also pretty sure that Gentoo doesn't do development work on Gnome,
Fluxbox, Apache, MySql and other packages. They just make ebuilds and
put them in the tree so people can use them.

P.S. The mystery remains how those conflicting files got there in the first

But, at this point I don't really care because things are back in balance

I hate saying something when I don't know the full circumstances, but
here is how I do mine, and how I have recovered data from the backup.
I mount the plaintext with this command (actual details have been
changed because I do it in a shell script which does other things):

encfs ~/.encrypted ~/.plaintext

~/.encrypted is the encrypted dir, ~/.plaintest is what I lok at when
I want to see the plaintext. I have various symlinks elsewhere which
point into ~/.plaintext.

When I backup this data, I only backup ~/.encrypted. In fact, since
backup is done as a part of root's nightly backup, and root cannot
look into ~/.plaintext, ~/.encrypted is all that can be backupped (did
I just invent a new verb? :-).

Now once I lost a file which I knew existed in the backup. All I had
to do was

1. As root, mount the backup, in this case as /mnt/backup.

2. As myself, mount as usual but change the names:

encfs /mnt/backup/home/felix/.encrypted ~/tmp/plaintext

3. Copy the file as plaintext:

cp -p ~/tmp/plaintext/path/to/file ~/.plaintext/path/to/file

Of course, if you backup as yourself, the root step is easily adjusted
to yourself.

It's been so long since I set this up that I do not remember the
details. There's a kernel module, maybe dm-crypt. You probably have
to enable something in the kernel config. But once done, it's easy as
pi and just as tasty, and I really like the fact that root cannot get
access to the plaintext. For some reason, that just tinkles me pink.

For example, if I wanted a forgotten password laying in a text file

I cannot get it from the home machine.

In your scenario, I'd need access to both home machine and remote at
the same time to first get the blob of encrypted data off the remote
and then to decrypt it on home.

Then use rsync instead of tar, then you can mount the remote filesystem
using sshfs and encfs to read individual files. It's a little slow as you
are layering two FUSE filesystems, but quicker than downloading a
complete tarball just to get at one file. I've used this method with an
online backup service and it works.

Neil seems to be thinking the remote has encfs on board... it does
not. Hence my original quest for a different encryption process,
(mcrypt)

And both Felix' and Neils solutions seem to require access to the home
computer or root on the remote. Or a least access to a machine with
encfs on board.

Also, understand that the encrypted data is quite small... Not talking
a huge tarball at all.

du -sh ~/myencrypteddata
  7.4Mmyencrypteddata

That is uncompressed

So is it still a bad idea to unencrypt from encfs, recrypt in mcrypt
and ssh or rsync the result to the remote?

With something this size all of that should happen in a few seconds
right?

And this way, I'd be able to decrypt the thing on the remote; find what
I need and delete the unencrypted data leaving only the encrypted.

It does sound like a lot of huffing and puffing so am interested to hear
other ways.

I haven't tried it yet at all.

I guess another part of my question is will an mcrypted file setting
on an internet host (that can be hacked and has been at least once
since I've been involved (5yrs)), be of interest and easy enough to
crack (not the host but the file itself) that it would be likely a
hacker would try?

Once again this is not super secretive stuff, like murder or
such... and even banking info could only lead to a matter of mid 4
digit amounts at most. Nasty but not life threatening or bankruptcy
material and its unlikely at best that all accounts would be drained
before I caught a sniff of it.

But still, once my trove of passwords and certain banking info was
lost, it would be a real pita to clean up.

I wasn't thinking that at all. You use sshfs to mount the remote

is ssh.

Between KDE Gentoo, aren't most contributors volunteers? In volunteer
development it's normal necessary to focus on the features that one needs
most. I can really understand KDE's position that downstream distros - Red
Hat Canonical both have paid developers - can continue maintenance on a
codebase that is no longer receiving their primary attention.

 Stroller.

So, KDE is maintaining KDE 3.5? If KDE is/was maintaining KDE 3.5 then
Gentoo would still have it in the tree. If KDE is not supporting KDE 3.5
then Gentoo has to drop it, as things break and develop security issues.
Again, this is not Gentoo's fault for not developing KDE 3.5, it is KDE
that dropped it. What Redhat does most likely won't affect what Gentoo
does. I don't use Redhat but I do use Gentoo.
