I need to delete these two files and restart sysklogd to get some free space in /var (just in case someone around has a similar problem). A quick hack on the printk code in the kernel can be used though to solve all this spam. But the cpu usage doesn't get any better. I know not the reason why, but the truth is that xv wastes lots more of cpu to play video when I have fglrx+.30, with or without the logs, not here - btw, try gl. The difference of the colours will be... interessting.

I used genkernel --luks --lvm --install all to create kernel and initramfs. First, see one of my replies to David Shen's thread Self created initramfs cannot work from last saturday. It has my init(ram)fs creation scripts attached. Thanks, I will have a look. Although I'd like to use Gentoo's tool for that purpose, genkernel, which I used for the first time now. And it worked fine, except that it did not know I how to activate the other partitons (/usr, /var and many more) besides root and swap. I like to have everything as kernel modules, but the crypto stuff has to be directly in the kernel, unless I put these modules into the initramfs by hand. It doesn't make much sense to compile things as module which are needed right after (or even for) booting. The reason distributions do this is to give the most possible flexibility and useability on as much different systems as possible. I know. I did it anyway, just out of curiosity if this would work, and which things could in principle be modules. No problem with building this stuff directly into the kernel. having said that, you can even do w/o initramfs, just put everything into /boot (which should be a separate partition, then). Again, see my reply to David for the details. Interesting. Getting rid of initramfs looks like a simpler approach, no need to fiddle with cpio in order to change things. A: LVM - LUKS Many partitions make two volume groups with many LVMs. Each LVM is LUKS- encrypted. This gives me maximum flexibility, who knows what other OSes I might need to install on that drive. The boot partition is on a USB stick and also holds the key. Why? LUKS means Linux Unified Key Storage. No need to store the key elsewhere. Put a password based key on the root LV and encrypt everything else with a random key you put somewhere into /etc (I use /etc/crypt/keyfile). I do not want to have to enter a password every time my machine boots, so I put the key onto a stick. And simply made it the same for all partitions. And while I was at it, for maximum security, I also put /boot onto the stick. Sure, who would ever break into my house and modify my boot partition, replacing the kernel with kernel+keylogger or such... but then, I would probably also not need to encrypt my stuff at all. This did not work out of the box, I had to modify /lib/rcscripts/addons/dm-crypt-start.sh in order to open the other partitions than swap and root. Then you did something wrong. It works out of the box. Really? I know it does for root and swap (it works here), but how do I tell the system to also luskOpen all my other LVM volumes? B: LUKS - LVM A simpler approach. sda1 is a small boot partition, sda2 (the rest of the drive) is a LUKS-formatted LVM physical volume with volume group 'pvcrypt' on it. This does not work yet, the initramfs does not find the LVM. Because in Gentoo, only A is implemented/supported. Oh. I thought this would be even easier than approach A. And looking at the /init code it seems to me it should just work. There's a call to startVolumes after the root partition is unlocked by cryptsetup, which I think should activate the LVM, but it does nothing, it does not even find regular physical LVM volumes that are not on top of a crypt setup. I'll have a look at my .config again. This may take a while, I only have remote access to that PC at the moment. HTH... A little :) Thanks, Wonko

So i tried to mask it and keep the 0.9-r1 version instead, but with no result. I've added it to /etc/portage/package.mask and tried this forms: =sys-auth/policykit-0.92 =sys-auth/policykit-0.92 and also sys-auth/policykit-0.92 that should prenvet any version of it being merged, right? none of those attempts worked for me, and emerge keeps trying to merge it... i'm running a x86 system with no accept keywords set. any ideas? Thanks in advance. Davide Other people replied with the fixes, but I just want to chime in and say 1 of those isn't a valid package atom: sys-auth/policykit-0.92 The other 2 are valid. The first one will mask only version 0.92. The 2nd one will obviously mask 0.92 and above. If you want to mask all policykit versions, just add: sys-auth/policykit -- - Mark Shields

[gentoo-user] DOSEMU
Greetings, For a work related project I've got a DOS program (Borland C++ with graphics library) that I want to run under FreeDOS, DOSEMU, and Linux. The graphics are pretty simple - lines, bars, and an alphabetic font. When I start DOSEMU from a Gnome terminal window, the DOS program correctly displays its graphic just fine. When I use a command line, i.e. don't have X running, the program clears the screen but doesn't display its graphics. Since the target machine is an embedded 486SX with limited mass storage, operation without X is a must. I've got dosemu version 1.4.0.1 built with flags X gpm -debug -svga. Anybody knowledgeable about DOSEMU and its pitfalls for the unwary newbie (namely me :-) TIA, David

[gentoo-user] X broken; keyboard for sure, maybe dri
A reboot has lost X, in particular the keyboard confuses it. Here is the beginning of the X log. Unfortunately, I didn't save the previous working log. This is ~amd64 under 2.6.30-gentoo-r1 and -r2. I learned a while back I could get by without an X config. It swapped a couple of the menu / alt / menu keys, but I adapted. Now X fills its log with these expected keysym, got XF86* messages, and I have no idea what causes them. Without X, it's hard to search the forums and bugzilla to see how others have coped. I suspect I have emerged or unmerged something I shouldn't have, but I don't remember anything particular on this update / reboot cycle other than LVM and the kernel change (2.6.30-gentoo-r1 to -r2), and reboot with either -r1 or -r2 makes no difference that I can see. There are two other problems. The fb0 complaint has been there for a while; I have to sudo rm /dev/fb0 for X to work. The kernel has the framebuffer configured, but I haven't investigated much because I can get X working without /dev/fb0. The dri line seems new, but might not matter. The display works. The mouse works. It seems to be only the keyboard which is hosed. But if someone knows how to fix the dri complaint, thanks. === begin X log X.Org X Server 1.5.2 Release Date: 10 October 2008 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0 Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.27-gentoo-r7 x86_64 Current Operating System: Linux crowfix 2.6.30-gentoo-r2 #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Jul 4 14:07:08 PDT 2009 x86_64 Build Date: 20 December 2008 04:18:31PM Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org to make sure that you have the latest version. [gentoo-user] qt blocks, poppler, etc.
I am trying to install cb2bib from an overlay. The ebuild is on gentoo bugs. On this machine, over time, I have gotten qt to settle down, but now it's a mess. I have tried to install some dependencies with emerge -1 , but since I have too little understanding of that issue, didn't do that for all. Now qt-core has downgraded. After installing (emerge -1) apps-text/poppler, then dev-libs/poppler 0.10.7 installed ok. So I'm starting to understand how that works. Can I also install x11-libs/qt-core-4.5.1 by oneshot, and then install x11-libs/4.5.2? This cyclical bunch of blocks has hit me many, many times, and I was glad to discover that at least part of the problem was surmountable.
