[gentoo-user] vncviewer from package vnc crashes.

2008-11-05 Thread David Harel
Greetings,

I use vncviewer from package vnc version 4.1.2-r4 (latest Gentoo stable)
connecting to an MSXP machine and it crashes when I maximize the window.
From the shell:vncviewer: TXScrollbar.cxx:47: void TXScrollbar::set(int,
int, int, bool): Assertion `limit_ 0 len_ = 0 len_ = limit_'
failed.
I experienced many problems with this package like that when vncviewer
to an MS machine it sometimes got it's network hang for a few minutes
(didn't respond to ping. seem to me that rapid graphics update was
performed when it hanged) but I don't even know on which side are the
problems.
Any recommendations?

Although I upgraded my kernel recently, defenetly I had vmplayer working

Thanks to Ralf and Dan who tried to help here.

Funny thing though, When I do the emerge I get the bash debug prompt:

and when I Ctrl-D it, I get those messages such as:

25): cannot find include file stddef.h
not in ../stddef.h
not in ../../stddef.h
not in ../../include/stddef.h
not in /usr/include/stddef.h

which seems like a bad reference.

Anyway, I use kernel 2.6.20-gentoo-r8 and I had headers of 2.6.22 so I
removed that and installed sys-kernel/linux-headers-2.6.20-r2. It says I
have to recompile glibc. Personally I don't feel like doing that and it
seems it has nothing to do with the success of this phase of the
installation but if you insist

Re: [gentoo-user] smbd starts slow.

2007-06-27 Thread David Harel

Thanks for your response,

In /etc/conf.d/samba and /etc/init.d/samba no log file is mentioned.

In /etc/samba/smb.conf:

[global]
   log file = /var/log/samba/%m.log

Thanks,
Problem found.

Had Interfaces set to:
interfaces = vmnet* eth0
but vmolayer was not started (I hardly use it).
To see the problem I had to set log level:
log level = 2

smbd takes about 20 seconds to start.

None whatsoever.

An error message quoted by yourself, perhaps some screen output or
even ... god forbid ... some relevant log file entries might change
that though.

And while you're at it, define slow. 3 seconds? 3 minutes? 3 hours?

I gave mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] the file. Because I am new in bugzulla
and I was afraid to attach such a file to the bug data. I didn't see him
do anything with the file nor did he come back to me about it. Do you
think I should attach the file to the bug report?

Segfaulting wasn't exactly what I meant by reproducible.. ;) I was asking
about the /usr/local prefix which seems quite weird...

The bug report doesn't include any usable information. You need to
explain on the bug what you've done and you need to attach the complete
build log that I'm quite sure portage provides the location for.

Attached the log. Hope it's what you need. I am ashame to say I haven't
looked into it so I don't know if there is anything obvious I failed to
do. If that is the case, I apologize.

I don't need it. The bug report needs it. Together with an explanation of what
you have done with your system. Without more information on it your bug
report is useless.

Your system appears to be quite borked though. Apparently /dev is not
populated properly, linux-headers appears to be missing and I have no idea
what else might be broken. I'm inclined to just suggest `emerge -e system` or
a complete reinstall unless someone else has a better suggestion.

In the future if you ever attach a log file like that on this mailing list
again please compress it first (note: do not compress attachments on bugzilla
though). Also please don't top post.

Sorry for being stupid here but I don't know what else to add to this
problem. The bad file is alutInit.c

the bad line is:

 if (!alcCloseDevice (device))

I couldn't find where the function is but obviously it returns the wrong
data type.

I was advised to emerge sync. Did that recently (about 2-3 weeks) but
I'll do it again to be on the safe side.

[gentoo-user] openssl 0.9.8 installs /usr/lib/openssl.so.0.9.7 only

2007-05-16 Thread David Harel

Hi all,

I screwed up my openssl installation.
Since then, I have to keep links in /usr/lib that will link libssl.so.0.9.8 -
libssl.so.0.9.7
and similar for libcrypto.
upgrades/downgrades/leftgrades and even rightgrades didn't work.
Currently when I try to install anything that might use openssl I get (for
example openldap)
configure: error: Could not locate TLS/SSL package
!!! Please attach the following file when filing a report to bugs.gentoo.org:
!!! /var/tmp/portage/net-nds/openldap-2.3.30-r2/work/openldap-2.3.30/config.log
In the log file typically I get:
configure:19463: cc -c -O2 -march=pentium3 -pipe conftest.c 5
conftest.c:128:25: error: openssl/ssl.h: No such file or directory
configure:19469: $? = 1
configure: failed program was:

Another example is from postgres installation:
configure:6967: result: no
configure:6977: error: library 'crypto' is required for OpenSSL

Any idea?

How? some details may be useful.

Originally I thought it's too long of a story to tell but...
I got confused from two things.
1. even though the version is 0.9.8 all I could find was 0.9.7
2. most of the files were installed in /usr/local/ssl

So I did symbolic links and tried downgrade to 0.9.7. At some point I
even uninstalled openssl entirely which disabled my machine almost
entirely so I had to restore libssl from backup (but it was older version).

Since then, I have to keep links in /usr/lib that will link
libssl.so.0.9.8 - libssl.so.0.9.7 and similar for libcrypto.

It sound like you may need to run revdep-rebuild, as mentioned in the
elog output from the openssl merge.

Re: [gentoo-user] Panic at boot time after update kernel to 2.6.20-r8.

2007-05-12 Thread David Harel

Thank you both Neil Bothwick andAlan McKinnon for the great help.

Got this one working now. Still many features arn't working yet such as
alsa and wifi but I think I will make it now.

The driver I needed seem to be AHCI SATA. Was rather difficult to
identify that that is the right driver because lspci states:

00:1f.2 SATA controller: Intel Corporation 82801FBM (ICH6M) SATA
Controller (rev 04)

and you can't find 82801 in .config
Also it seems to me that the driver should be statically loaded and not
as a module (which now makes sense unless I could have changed things in
modules.conf or similar).

May I suggest/encourage people to write summaries (such as was a custom
in sun managers mailing list (sun.unc.edu?) so other people can learn
and save time?

OK, you seem to have run into the Lets rip IDE out of the kernel and
replace it with ATA thing that happened in 2.6.18...

In menuconfig , under Drivers, there's a menu a little bit below the
IDE?MFM stuff. It's called SATA/PATA or similar. You will find
appropriate settings for your hardware there. I can't elabortae as I
don't know what you have, but you disk settings seem to be IDE

Attached the panic message:

VFS: cannot open root device sda1 or unknown block (0,0)

please append a correct root= boot option.

Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown -
block (0,0)

Please, please, please always quote the correct error messages and leave
your personal evaluation out of it. See how the above says absolutely
nothing about ext3? But your original post was all about that, and
without the actual error and .config, we would have spent hours trying
to get your fs working, when in fault it is not faulty...

After installing gentoo-source-2.6.20-r8 I copied my current .config

new properties of the new kernel and the rest was taken from the
original config file however, at boot time I got panic halt on root

Re: [gentoo-user] Panic at boot time after update kernel to 2.6.20-r8.

2007-05-11 Thread David Harel
Sorry for not providing details (was sure people will identify the
problem in a glance).

Upgrade is from 2.6.17-r8

Attached the panic message:

VFS: cannot open root device sda1 or unknown block (0,0)

please append a correct root= boot option.

Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown -
block (0,0)

Attached the .config file (after converted to 2.6.20-r8 - make oldconfig
- just hit the enter key)

lilo is double checked. Below the relevant section.

boot=/dev/sda
root=/dev/sda1
read-only

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.20-r8.v0

 label=SDA1-20-r8.v0
 append=root=/dev/sda1

Greetings,

After installing gentoo-source-2.6.20-r8 I copied my current .config
file to the new kernel and did make oldconfig. I had to do define
only new properties of the new kernel and the rest was taken from the
original config file however, at boot time I got panic halt on root
mount stating that ext3 is not supported. Double check on support for
ext3 is OK.

Any idea?

Given the actual information you posted above, none whatsoever.

Please post your .config and the version number of the kernel you were
upgrading from and we'll all take a look-see

you don't need to reinstall everything just for upgrading gcc to 4.1.x. Please
read the update guide.

For your problem, I would try MAKEOPTS=-j1 first. Oh, and reset every
LDFLAGS you might have set - what about emerge --info?

Also if you tried to upgrade and did compile some packages they
_might_ need to be recompiled. Some packages don't like different gcc
versions in their libs (or just kernel + modules?).

First. please don't use html and top posting.
Sorry about that. The recipient gentoo-user@lists.gentoo.org is set in
my address book to plain text but thunderbird seems to ignore it.

Second, as stated just above that passage, it is not nessecary but
recommended.

Here is a quotation from the doc:

To be completely safe that your system is in a sane state, you must
rebuild the toolchain and then world to make use of the new compiler.

(Now how do I make the word MUST above underlined and bold?) ;-)

You must however follow listing 2.1 and I would recomend keeping the old gcc
installed untill all packages have been upgraded/reemerged just in case.

[gentoo-user] Packages that do not compile.

2007-05-07 Thread David Harel

As so many times before, openssl fails to compile.

Top most error is: openssl.c:(.text+0x15c): undefined reference to
`OPENSSL_add_all_algorithms_noconf'. Two other packages that give me
trouble are: glibc and python. All attempts are after sync and to a
stable (so I hope) version.

GCC version is: gcc (GCC) 3.3.6 (Gentoo 3.3.6, ssp-3.3.6-1.0, pie-8.7.8)
I think at one point I tried to change gcc configuration (gcc-config) to
version 4.1.1 but if that is the only way I understand I will have to
reinstall everything.

[gentoo-user] compile errors when emerging kdelib-3.5.5-r8

2007-03-03 Thread David Harel

Hi all,

I did some upgrades and I guess I screwed something up cos I can't
compile kdelib anymore. I tried with kdelib-3.5.6 as well but seems like
the same problem. Dependencies showed I should have done qt-3.3.6-r4 and
to be on the safe side I unmerged qt-4.2.2 (which I emerged
unintentionally). Also I had trouble with glibc-2.5 that made me do gcc
to 4.4.1-r3 and gcc-config as well.

last operation before errors is linking libartskde.la and then a shower
of undefs.

Therefore my current state:

[gentoo-user] Problems emerging gcc.

2007-02-25 Thread David Harel

Hi,

Trying to emerge glibc I got error:

configure: error:

*** These critical programs are missing or too old: gcc

*** Check the INSTALL file for required versions.

I upgraded gcc to 4.1.1-r3. apparently I have more versions of gcc
installed.

Questions:

   1. What to do to fix glibc emerge?

   2. Where is the file INSTALL reside?

   2. Do I need all the older versions of gcc?

Re: [gentoo-user] emerge openssl starts a bash debug session.

2007-01-08 Thread David Harel

I am afraid the problem is not as simple as you try to describe it.

to begin with, here is the result of find on stddef.h

# find / -mount -name stddef.h
/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.6/include/stddef.h
/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.6/install-tools/include/stddef.h
/usr/lib/gcc/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.4.5/include/stddef.h
/usr/lib/gcc/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.4.5/install-tools/include/stddef.h
/usr/lib/gcc/i686-pc-linux-gnu/4.1.1/include/stddef.h
/usr/include/linux/stddef.h
/usr/include/wine/msvcrt/stddef.h
/usr/src/linux-2.6.15-gentoo-r1/include/linux/stddef.h
/usr/src/linux-2.6.17-gentoo-r8/include/linux/stddef.h

but also I must mention that I was successful in compiling openssl
manually by

cd to /var/tmp/portage/openssl-0.9.8d/work/openssl-0.9.8d and then do
./config and make it all came out just fine.

Again, I'm not 100% sure of what the issue is - just trying to see if
I can suggest anything useful - but can you do 'locate stddef.h' or
something? It looks like it's missing a file. There is also a command
- using equery I think - to find out what package a specific file
belongs to, which would help you fix any missing dependencies or such.

[gentoo-user] Samba and Hebrew File Names

2006-11-16 Thread David Harel

Hi,

I never could make Linux box use MS-XP files (NTFS) over samba when the
file names are Hebrew.

open attempts of such file names results in failure (-1) and errno set
to NOENT (standard message: No such file or directory).

My last attempt is with:
http://www.iglu.org.il/faq/index.cgi?_recurse=1file=74#file_77

Unfortunately the command make_unicodemap is missing from the package
(samba 3.0.20b is what I currently have)

I tried the mount with options codepage=cp862,iocharset=iso8859-8

and I have kernel configurations 2.6.17 with:

NLS_CODEPAGE_437

NLS_CODEPAGE_862

NLS_ISO8859_8

NLS_ISO8859_1 (only God knows why I keep this one)

NLS_UTF8

I don't know what more I can do (I'm loosing it).

played in double speed. I don't know where to start looking.

Any idea?

More information? What program did you use to play the wma file? What
do you mean by anything else from that moment? Do you mean anything
else played with the same software? Or all sounds for your entire
system?

There was a sequence of operations. I tried amarok which didn't play the
clip then I tried mplayer which did play the clip but speedy then
anything I played on any software tool was twice the speed (entire system).

[gentoo-user] Alsa for Kernel2.4

Re: [gentoo-user] Alsa for Kernel2.4

2005-11-07 Thread David Harel

Thanks for your reply,

Du you know if there is a kernel configuration I should do to have ALSA
on 2.4? for example should I have OSS set or midi loopback device?

Christoph Eckert wrote:

in 2.4 ALSA is completely outside the kernel, so you need the following
packages:

* ALSA-lib
* ALSA-driver
* ALSA-utils (optional but recommended)

Re: [gentoo-user] codec drivers problem.

2005-09-25 Thread David Harel

Jonathan, Thanks for your explanation.

I still don't get it.
The command emerge should have done the dependent packages before doing
the desirable package anyway. Also, if I have to specify additional
packages while doing mplayer, how do I add them? but last thing. I did
emerge win32codec and THEN mplayer and that didn't work.

I was not aware of the use flag. Is there a document how to use this
flag in case of media players?

There's the win32codec which should allow you to play wmv's, along with
realplayer which also installed that program/codec. You can run
--verbose (or -v) on emerge to see the use flags for that program:

-
jwright on jonathan [ ~ ] -- emerge -pv mplayer

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild U ] media-video/mplayer-1.0_pre7-r1 [1.0_pre7] -3dfx +3dnow
+3dnowext +X -aac -aalib +alsa (-altivec) -arts -bidi -bl +cdparanoia
+cpudetection -custom-cflags -debug +dga -directfb +divx4linux -doc +dts
+dv -dvb +dvd +dvdread -edl +encode -esd +fbcon -ggi +gif +gtk -i8x0
-ipv6 -jack -joystick +jpeg -libcaca -lirc -live -lzo -mad -matroska
-matrox +mmx +mmxext -mythtv -nas -nls +nvidia +opengl -oss +png +real
+rtc +samba -sdl +sse -sse2 -svga -tga -theora +truetype -v4l -v4l2
-vorbis +win32codecs -xanim -xinerama -xmms +xv +xvid -xvmc 7,613 kB

Total size of downloads: 7,613 kB
-

Or, look though /usr/portage/profiles/{use, use.local}.desc which give
the descripts of the use flags. Also, if you have gentoolkit installed
(emerge gentoolkit), you can run:

-
jwright on jonathan [ profiles ] -- equery uses mplayer
[ Searching for packages matching mplayer... ]
[ Colour Code : set unset ]
[ Legend: Left column (U) - USE flags from make.conf ]
[ : Right column (I) - USE flags packages was installed with ]
[ Found these USE variables for media-video/mplayer-1.0_pre7 ]
 U I
 - - 3dfx : Adds support for 3dfx video cards to XFree86.
 + + 3dnow : Adds support for 3dnow multimedia processor

  [ and so on ]

[gentoo-user] codec drivers problem.

2005-09-23 Thread David Harel

Hi all,

Installing video facilities such as mplayer or kaffeine resulted in some
video formats such as .wmv not working.
I unmerged all video players and libraries and then carefully emerged
them back again. First the libraries and then the players as adviced,
among other places, in:
http://mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/HTML-single/en/MPlayer.html#id2823088

Eventually, I manually installed codec and then mplayer to make it work.
Should I report this as a bug?

Portage is seeing two version numbers in the filename, 0.3 and 28102.
Rename the ebuild to ktranslator-0.3.ebuild.

[gentoo-user] resume interrupted emerge operation.

2005-06-18 Thread David Harel

Hi all,

emerge man pages say I can use --resume to finishes unfinished emerge
operation.

I had emerged wine. On my slow machine this thing can take forever.
Unintentionally I had forgotten some big files which eventually gave me
a disk full in the middle of - make install - operation made by emerge.

I did emerge --resume but this started the entire compilation from scratch.

This is really annoying. I remember there should be a much better way to
resume an unfinished emerge operation but I don't remember how to do it.

Re: [gentoo-user] wine and winetools.

2005-06-18 Thread David Harel

Thanks for your reply,
I installed first wine20041201 as recommended (manually no emerge for
it), then wine-config-sidenet worked. However some URLs such as
www.arkia.co.il didn't work.

Looking at the FAQ in sidenet I noticed that dcom98.exe might help.
I got error: Error registering the OCX c:\windows\system\rpcrt4.dll
and eventually IE6 stopped working.

Started all over again. This time I advanced to wine20050524. looked
same as 20041201. Now I tried again dcom98. This time I got:

ThunkConnect32 failure !!
and then:
Error loading W95INF32.DLL
which is what I got when doing winetools.
Any idea?

Hi all,

Is anybody successful with winetools: www.von-thadden.de/Joachim/WineTools/
I installed wine 20050111 (I also tried 20041019)which works quite well
on many applications. I wanted to install IE6 as well knowing it will be
best if I did it using winetools - which works just great on RedHat (9).
Can't even install dcom98. I keep getting error:
ThunkConnect32 Failure!!
and
Error loading W95inf32.dll

Then, If I continue to SP6 installation (IE6) it gets hanged on about
47% progress.

Joachim von Thadden (who does the winetools) gave it up on Gentoo. Any
idea?

I got it working with wine 20050111 and wine-config-sidenet-1.8.1:
