Does /usr/sbin/faxq still exist?

Try running it by hand from a command prompt and see what error messages it
produces. You might need to 'su' to the appropriate user first.

[gentoo-user] How to make binary Asterisk package

2024-02-03 Thread Thelma

How to make net-misc/asterisk-16.30.1 into binary package so I can install in
on future gentoo boxes.

I think asterisk ver. 16 (still in portage) is the last one still compatible with
sip/iax code all future versions starting with ver.18 are converting sip =>
pjsip
that is not compatible with older sip hardware.

So if I install Gentoo on a new box and asterisk-16 is no longer in portage I
would like to install asterisk from my local binary.

Re: [gentoo-user] Asterisk - need some help [SOLVED]

2024-02-03 Thread Thelma

I think I was able solve my problem, it was as simple as disabling
"jitterbuffer" in iax.conf
I can hear phone voicemail request from the remote asterisk, will know 100% on
Monday.

Regarding Asterisk I'm on 16.30.1 ; tried emerging ver.18 but my AudioCodes box
wouldn't even register to it.
Conversion scrip (sip->pjsip) will not do any good if the hardware (AudioCodes
boxes, Sipura and other units) are not compatible with pjsip.
Is IAX is gone as well in newer versions?

I have an impression this is the end of old Asterisk that Digium started; very,
very sad :-/
It had good community support.

Newer versions 18+ are not compatible with older hardware and learning
curve/conversion is not worth it.
Sangoma - community support is almost not existent, few folks just bark at you
if one mention still running ver. 16

I'll hang on to 16.30.1 as long as I can.

On 2/2/24 20:55, William Kenworthy wrote:

In v18 sip is still present but deprecated - after this its removed. There is a
conversion script (sip->pjsip) for migration.  It required a few sacrificial
chickens and much swearing until I got the upstream trunk to register (iinet in
AU).  Its all working good now, the pjsip config is more programmer friendly but
also allows much more complex (read hard to follow/fault find) configuration.

Note that the CLI commands are not equivalent to sip (including help, its now
pjsip) with a different format.  After install, but before re-configuration
everything sip related disappears on restart.

Sounds like a firewall setting on the home computers, make sure all
the ports are open between the start and end of the asterisk rpt

That is what I can think of at the moment.

Good suggestion trying SIP instead of IAX since the call doesn't go over

I do not use asterisk, but I would look at configuration files to see if there
is some filtering of allowed IP addresses for connections.  My first suspicion
would be that main-asterisk and/or backup-asterisk has changed its address as
seen by remote-asterisk and is now being handled differently.

When home-asterisk register IAX with the remote-asterisk, I can see it on the
asterisk-CLI commend line: "iax show registry" the are registered with each
other,
otherwise the call wouldn't go through at all.

Here is the output, from both asterisks; one that works and one that doesn't:

I'm puzzled as printers were working last week without any problems.
I did not do any update or modification to the system but all of a sudden
they stop working "Unable to locate printer"

The solution was to change printer setting:

lpd://BRN30055C898DF9/BINARY_P1
lpd://brother-5370/BINARY_P1

with:
lpd://printer-IP-address/BINARY_P1
lpd://printer-IP-address/BINARY_P1

How to set Avahi-daemon to start automatically deleted printer?

I don't think avahi is needed unless you are printing from different
temporary clients and you want the printers to be automatically
discovered on the network. If this is not your use case, you could try
something like this:

lpadmin -p 3170-color -E -v ipp:///BINARY_P1 -m
everywhere

Which will use the CUPS driverless method:

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Driverless_printing

These instruction on Gengoo Driveless printing are not clear.
I tried to follow this example and run:

lpadmin -p foobar -E -v ipp://10.0.0.106/ipp -m everywhere

did not create file: foobar.ppd in /etc/cups/ppd/

ls -al /etc/cups/ppd/
-rw-r- 1 root lp 26945 Nov 30 2020 3170-color.ppd
-rw-r- 1 root lp 26929 Nov 30 2020 3170-color.ppd.O
-rw-r- 1 root lp 16460 Jan 27 13:48 5370.ppd

-rw-r- 1 root lp 16476 Apr 7 2022 L6200.ppd.O

Did you run the lpadmin command as root?

But it did create foobar local raw printer name foobar, and when I tried to
print to it, it spit out strange characters.

Where did you find this local raw printer?

locahost:631

When I select printer it show what driver it using.

I noticed you substitute after /ipp with
/BINARY_P1 This is not very clear in Gentoo Documentation

Trying it:
lpadmin -p 3170-color2 -E -v ipp://10.0.0.105/BINARY_P1 -m everywhere

It did not create any file name: 3170-color2.ppd ; but it did create entry
in printer entry 3170-color2 - local raw printer and printing to it works
OK. Thank you!

You can try moving temporarily all .ppd files from /etc/cups/ppd/ and try
running the lpadmin command again. Perhaps if it finds some ppd file already
in there with the same settings it won't create a new file.

Can you explain the /ipp vs. /BINARY_P1

If you login into the printer's admin GUI with your browser and navigate to
Network, Services, you will see a list of service names. You can try
configuring CUPS with each one at a time to see what works for you.

I'm using XFCE it doesn't have GUI setting for printers. But I can login via
http://localhost:631 to see the printers

OK, let's try a different syntax[1] to see if those pesky .ppd files will be
created:

lpadmin -p 3170-color2 -E -v ipp://10.0.0.105/ipp/print -m everywhere
lpadmin -p 5370-bw -E -v ipp://10.0.0.106/ipp/print -m everywhere

If they still fail to work with IPP-Everywhere, then I'm afraid you have to
use specific Brother drivers for these printers[2].

[1] https://www.cups.org/doc/network.html
[2] https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Brother_networked_printer

Hm.., it didn't do anything. (and yes, I run them as root)

# lpadmin -p 5370-bw -E -v ipp://10.0.0.106/ipp/print -m everywhere
# ls -al /etc/cups/ppd/

-rw-r- 1 root lp 26945 Nov 30 2020 3170-color.ppd
-rw-r- 1 root lp 26929 Nov 30 2020 3170-color.ppd.O

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Jan 27 17:10 .keep_net-print_cups-0

The driver I'm using brother driver 5370.ppd
Driver: Brother BrGenML1 for CUPS (grayscale, 2-sided printing)
Connection: lpd://10.0.0.106/BINARY_P1

This one is working.

Try to remove the option '-E' above to see if it creates a ppd file this time.
If it refuses to work, consider emerging a corresponding driver from brother-
overlay, instead of the CUPS driverless configuration.

I tried Without '-E' and still no ppd file in: /etc/cups/ppd/

Trying to print to this printer prints gibberish.

I am confused. In your previous message you wrote it did not create an entry
in ppd, but it printed fine. :-/

So am I, I was under impression it printed OK as I created two entries and try
printing one page, it printed OK
but now it prints strange characters only.

lpadmin -p 3170-color2 -E -v ipp://10.0.0.105/BINARY_P1 -m everywhere
lpadmin -p 5370-bw -E -v ipp://10.0.0.106/BINARY_P1 -m everywhere

Driver: Local Raw Printer (grayscale, 2-sided printing)
Connection: ipp://10.0.0.106/BINARY_P1
Connection: ipp://10.0.0.105/BINARY_P1

The gibberish you see being printed may be a result of the driver. The 'IPP
Everywhere' driver should not present itself as a raw printer in the localhost
CUPS webgui (https://127.0.0.1:631), but as:

Description: 5370-bw
Location:
Driver: series - IPP Everywhere (mono)
Connection: ipp://10.0.0.106/BINARY_P1

That implies the problem is your router or printer - nothing to do with gentoo.

Using the IP address is dangerous - unless you've explicitly configured stuff,
it can change ... At the end of the day, everything here is a pain in the arse
if you are using DHCP, and if you're using static IPs it's a pain in the arse
too ... :-)

What you want to do is configure your printer to send its DHCP with an "I am called X"
message. Your DHCP server (I guess it's your router) then needs to configure DNS so that X matches
whatever IP address it hands out (that *should* happen automatically). Then everything "just
works (TM)".

The trouble is it sometimes doesn't "just work". With my router, I know I have
a local range of 192.168.1/8. And it's configured so that 1..127 are available for random
DHCP allocation. 128..254 are static addresses. and 0 and 255 are broadcast and router
respectively. That's of course all if IIRC.

But then, for my server(workstation) and printers I've then allocated a static
mac->IP mapping, so I can put a hard-coded entry in my hosts file. Stuff I
don't care about, laptops, mobile phones, games boxes, etc just get a random IP.

Basically, you need to understand how DNS, DHCP, and all this name allocation
stuff works, and it's pretty logical. It just takes quite a bit getting your
head round it.

Cheers,
Wol

Hm..., my route assign local pcs and printers static IP so there is no
confusion. How can it be dangerous.
I think this is simpler process then paying with DNS on small networks.

OK, I hesitate to delve into this too much but I did use it a 5-6 years ago
on Gentoo, but mostly for Gentoo-to-Gentoo connections. It did work but
then Google said they were going to start charging to use it so I stopped.

It was, at least at the time, Google's proprietary protocol and IIRC required
that I use google-chrome in some way which I no longer remember

Today I don't run Gentoo anymore but for Kubuntu-to-Kubuntu and
Kubuntu-to-Raspberry Pi/Stellarmate which is Debian based I
use VNC Viewer which works fine for my needs. If you don't figure
this one out you might try that. The instructions for setting it up were
at RealVNC's web site.

Good luck & HTH,
Mark

I tried with Linux --> Windows and it works and is still free, and I don't think
they will charge for it as there are lots of alternatives.Installed on one of
my Gentoo running XFCE
and it installed without any problems but after starting Google Remote Desktop
and trying to setup
remote access on to Gentoo it showed up a message that setup remote access is
only available for Windows and Mac.

Linux to Linux x2to go works well over openVPN and is secure.

1.)
"PasswordAuthentication no + UsePAM no" worked

I got a respond: "...Permission denied (publickey,keyboard-interactive)."

this focuses on disabling password-based authentication and the PAM system,
leaving the door open for other authentication methods that don't rely on

What other authentication methods that don't rely on passwords are?

2.) but so did:
"PasswordAuthentication no + KbdInteractiveAuthentication no"

I got a respond: "...Permission denied (publickey)"

This also disables password-based authentication but goes further by explicitly
turning off keyboard-interactive authentication.
This makes the authentication process non-interactive and relies on methods
like public key authentication.

It seems to me, second method is preferred.

man efibootmgr shows a 'label' option but
I've never used it. Try it at your own risk.

If I was going to try it I would first create the
new one with the new label using the data from
an existing option, test it, and if it worked then
delete the one with the less useful name.

 From Google Bard:

Use efibootmgr -c -d -p -l -L to
create a new entry with the desired label and correct path to the bootloader:

: The disk where the bootloader resides (e.g., /dev/sda)
: The partition number where the bootloader is located (e.g., 1)
: The desired label for the boot option
: The full path to the bootloader file (e.g.,
\\EFI\\ubuntu\\shimx64.efi)

Thank you! It worked as you suggested.

In my case, I created a new label:

efibootmgr -c -d /dev/nvme0n1p1 -p 1 -L i5_new -l /EFI/REFIND/REFIND_X64.EFI

device name and partition number can be derived from "fdisk -l"

I'm not sure why "/EFI/REFIND/REFIND_X64.EFI" are all caps letters, in /boot dir it is:
"/EFI/refind/refind_x64.efi"

but now my entries are less cryptic,

efibootmgr
BootCurrent: 0003
Timeout: 1 seconds
BootOrder: 0001,0003,0002
Boot0001* Gentoo_sda
HD(1,GPT,9d2481cf-8c35-4d9d-88ee-1d0d6e06cc68,0x800,0x1dc800)/File(\EFI\refind\refind_x64.efi)
Boot0002* UEFI OS
HD(1,GPT,87a5c5b6-c0a8-024c-b1c0-622907add992,0x800,0x20)/File(\EFI\BOOT\BOOTX64.EFI)424f
Boot0003* i5_new
HD(1,GPT,87a5c5b6-c0a8-024c-b1c0-622907add992,0x800,0x20)/File(\EFI\REFIND\REFIND_X64.EFI)

Switching can easily be done, with "efibootmgr and number" eg. efibootmgr 3
but this is only one reboot, it will go to default setup as per: BootOrder:
0001,0003,0002

To make it permanent change it has to be done with eg:
 efibootmgr -o 0003,0001,0002

I have no experience with refind but for my UEFI systems I accomplish this
using efibootmgr and a simple batch file. The machine always boots Linux
by default but from within Linux I can tell it to reboot into Windows

mark@science2:~$ sudo efibootmgr
BootCurrent: 0003
Timeout: 1 seconds
BootOrder: 0003,
Boot* Windows Boot Manager
Boot0003* ubuntu

mark@science2:~$ cat bin/RebootWindows
sudo efibootmgr -n
reboot
mark@science2:~$

Thank you, yes that work perfectly

"efibootmgr -n " is one time entry for one reboot; to set it permanently one
should use:
"efibootmgr -o + arrange entries"

Does anybody know how to rename the boot entries, in my case I have:

efibootmgr
BootCurrent: 0004
Timeout: 1 seconds
BootOrder: ,0004,0002
Boot* rEFInd Boot Manager
HD(1,GPT,87a5c5b6-c0a8-024c-b1c0-622907add992,0x800,0x20)/File(\EFI\REFIND\REFIND_X64.EFI)
Boot0002* UEFI OS
HD(1,GPT,87a5c5b6-c0a8-024c-b1c0-622907add992,0x800,0x20)/File(\EFI\BOOT\BOOTX64.EFI)424f
Boot0004* rEFInd Boot Manager
HD(1,GPT,9d2481cf-8c35-4d9d-88ee-1d0d6e06cc68,0x800,0x1dc800)/File(\EFI\refind\refind_x64.efi)

This is cryptic,
 - is sda disk
0004 - nvme disk

How to rename them to SDA and NVME respectively

The messages say that python requires USE=berkdb on sys-libs/gdbm,
while hylafaxplus requires an older version of media-libs/tiff.

The first one you can fix yourself, while the other probably needs an
update of hylafaxplus that supports the newer versions.

Regards,
Arve

You are correct, thank you.
The first one was an error from my old setting, I had USE= -berkdb removing it
solve the problem
Second hylafaxplus require tiff less than 4.6.0 so masking 4.6 version solved
the problem as well.

[gentoo-user] Dual Booting - selection from command line

2024-01-09 Thread thelma

I have a box that is two HD's and both are bootable; using "refind" instead of
grub.
So the selection I choose at boot which drive to boot will be the default
(during reboot, from command line) until I select the second drive.

The box will be installed in a remote location, so I have no option to select
which drive to boot from (unless I'm in front of the box).
Is it possible to select which drive I want to "boot" from the command line

If ssh with password is working, did you try letting ssh decide for the
correct location for your ssh key via ssh-copy-id:
ssh-copy-id -i ~/.ssh/my_key usern...@example.com

First time it will of course log in via password, but any further login
should use the ssh key.

If the key is still not accepted, have you tried a different ssh key
type (e.g. ed25519). Maybe the server rejects RSA keys?

Nice command, thank for the input; but it didn't work with Windows 11

I run:
ssh-copy-id -i ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub "Glen Server"@10.0.0.130
/usr/bin/ssh-copy-id: INFO: Source of key(s) to be installed:
"/home/joseph/.ssh/id_rsa.pub"
/usr/bin/ssh-copy-id: INFO: attempting to log in with the new key(s), to filter
out any that are already installed
/usr/bin/ssh-copy-id: INFO: 1 key(s) remain to be installed -- if you are
prompted now it is to install the new keys
Glen Server@10.0.0.130's password:
'exec' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

Number of key(s) added: 1

Now try logging into the machine, with: "ssh 'Glen Server@10.0.0.130'"
and check to make sure that only the key(s) you wanted were added.

Trying to login again still asked me for password.
On Windows 11 public key should be copied to
C:\ProgramData\ssh\administrators_authorized_keys

The ssh_config on the client side id default, never changed anything in it.

https://serverfault.com/questions/1091575/why-does-ssh-think-i-still-have-a-known-hosts2-file

This is just the usual approach of a user-specific file not existing
unless it is created. I'd say you can just ignore this message and focus
on the verbose messages about the authentication mechanisms.

In the link above the suggest fix for "...fix $HOME/.ssh/known_hosts2:
No such file or directory"
to add "UserKnownHostsFile ~/.ssh/known_hosts"
I tried to add it to sshd_config but ssh wouldn't even start.

No, this is not something to fix. This is the ssh utility looking for
that file in one of the default locations and not finding it. That's
just the result of the call which tried to access the file. The same
would happen in known_hosts didn't exist yet.

I mean, you can change the setting if you want (in ssh_config, and not
sshd_config, it probably is not starting because it's not a valid
setting for sshd_config), but you don't have to.

The above error message it just might be the noise, linux to linux all
connections work, it is just linux to windows it is not working.

It is working. The public key on Windows needs to be placed in
C:\ProgramData\ssh\administrators_authorized_keys

Administrative user
The contents of your public key (\.ssh\id_rsa.pub) needs to be placed on the
server into a text file called administrators_authorized_keys in
C:\ProgramData\ssh\. You can copy your public key using the OpenSSH scp secure
file-transfer utility, or using a PowerShell to write the key to the file. The
ACL on this file needs to be configured to only allow access to administrators
and System.

Running on windows, via Command line:

Works, the text is retained including grey-scale font.

But running same command from a bat file, the grey-scale font is removed.

I run Windows 7 in VirualBox-6 and it runs relatively fast but after upgrade to
VirtualBox-7 (7.0.10) I noticed
users weren't able to access Windows-7 server; the network got almost non
responsive. I've notice same with earlier VirtualBox-7.0.8 (something)
I've found many post complaining about similar problems with VirtualBox-7

What changes did they introduced in VirtualBox-7 that make it unusable?

It will force me to switch to Windows 11; I know Windows-7 is no longer
supported but I've been running Windows-7 on Gentoo for a long time
and VirtualBox-7 incompatibility with Windows-7 will force me to ditch Linux :-/

You don't set a "default sound card" with F6. All that does is simply allow you
to see the mixer controls of a different sound card.

You set your default sound card by using your desktop environment audio
settings. In KDE, I click on the speaker tray icon and there I can select my
default sound card and default microphone:

   https://i.imgur.com/Lz3Bfyk.png

Surely there's something similar in the desktop environment you're using.

If I remember correctly, running
alsamixer - allows you select certain cards, ESC exits

alsactl store - would write the setting to a file, under user it would be ~/.asoundrc (I could
be wrong). But in my case "alsactl store" doesn't do anything, It opens
"master" setting single bar setting.

Next time I would open "alsamixer" it would open on the last card I was
viewing. I was long line since I played with these setting, so I could be wrong.

I'm using XFCE but did not emerge any special packages for sound control.

Enable the EFI frame buffer and rebuild the kernel. You should probably also use the

It was a virtualbox upgrade (not kernel), the notification is on Gentoo host

I might be related to "app-emulation/virtualbox-guest-additions"
Unmerging this package solved the problem, no more pop-up at login.

[gentoo-user] Making old SSD bootable with EFI

2023-12-06 Thread thelma

I have two disks in one system:

1.) Old SSD and I'm trying to make the bootable partition with EFI
(note this system has not been upgraded in over 5-years, so upgrading it is not
possible)
It just runs two old programs from this disk.  The disk comes from an old Atom
- computer so I installed in a new computer Intel i5

The new computer  had this old SSD disk installed in addition it has a new
nvme-disk.  This nvme runs the current Gentoo.

The old SSD had a bootable partition /dev/sda1 ext2 which I mounted on
nmve-disk and made an old kernel backup to /boot_backup on the same SSD drive.
- I deleted the /dev/sda1 partition and created new partition EFI System and
format it as vfat:
mkfs.fat -F 32 /dev/sda1
- mounted the new sda1 partition under /atom/efi (root partition /dev/sda3 is
mounted in dir: /atom)
- run:
grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/atom/efi

- copied to SSD /boot dir. all the old kernel files (I backup previously):
System.map-current
config-current
kernel-current

run:
grub-mkconfig -o /atom/boot/grub/grub.cfg

The old /boot/grub had old file: grub.conf with entries:
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/kernel-current root=/dev/sda3 vga=normal

but so the above command generated new file: grub.cfg with new entries and took
my kernel files from nvme-disk:  vmlinuz-6.1.57-gentoo
'Gentoo GNU/Linux, with Linux 6.1.57-gentoo' not my old kerenel files from
"/atom/boot"

In /efi/EFI/genoo directory there is binary file:
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 135168 Dec  6 13:38 grubx64.efi

Does this file  grubx64.efi point to the boot directory and configuration file:
grub.cfg ?

I have noticed grub-install has some options like:  --boot-directory=DIR
would it help somehow to point to /atom/boot directory so it can use:
"kernel-current" instead of "vmlinuz-6.1.57-gentoo"
example:
grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/atom/efi
--boot-directory=/atom/boot

Or is it possible to edit manually grub.cfg even though it says # DO NOT EDIT
THIS FILE

2.) Another solution is I could bootstrap the old SSD /dev/sda and try to try
to install with grub
but that grub is and old version 0.97-something and is not compiled with
"GRUB_PLATFORMS="efi-64"

I've been operating that way for some years, but I have reason to believe

Both Peters are right and my previous answer was wrong for Thelma's usecase,
the /boot directory must be on a linux fs which understands symlinks *if
vmlinuz is used* - this is because the ESP partition's FAT fs cannot use
symlinks.

The /efi directory *must* be on a FAT fs and contain the grubx64.efi, or any
other bootloader *.efi image.

If kernels are copied manually and vmlinuz symlinks are not used then a FAT
partition with mountpoint on /boot and containing the /boot/efi directory will
work as intended.

Thanks for Peters explanation now it is clear to me how it works.
But I have a question, in Gentoo manual hand book
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:AMD64/Installation/Disks
the instruction is to create 1 GiB partition for /efi

Why so large, do others file system need it so much?
In my case /efi take only 1%
FilesystemSizeUsed Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/nvme0n1p1 1022M 280K1022M 1% /efi

The EFI boot on the MoBo must be set to Legacy Bios or EFI, depending on
the partition table type of your SSD (MBR Vs GPT).

To set this you should enable the CSM (Compatibility Support Module) in
the
Boot Menu of the MoBo and then look into the Boot Configuration submenu
choices.

The CSM (Compatibility Support Module) in the Boot Menu is greyed out.
It is Asus h610i Motherboard, and according for CSM to be enabled it needs
dedicated graphic card; I don't have one, using Intel i5 CPU graphic.

This is weird. What does a dedicated graphics card have to do with the
partitioning scheme of a storage device? :-/

I don't have access to your MoBo to know its quirks, so can't help with
specifics.

Is it possible to boot strap and re-partition /boot sector so the
motherboard will recognize it without dedicated graphic card?

The first thing to establish is if your SSD is using MBR partitioning, or GPT:

fdisk -l /dev/sda | grep 'Disklabel type'

will output "dos" for MBR, or "gpt" for GPT. I suspect your SSD is using MBR.

You could convert the MBR to GPT, but ... there is a good chance of wiping the
disk and losing data. Therefore, first create a full disk backup before you
attempt anything else. Then also create a backup of your MBR for good measure
using dd, or sfdisk:

dd if=/dev/sda of=backup.mbr bs=512 count=1

or

sfdisk --dump /dev/sda > MBR_backup.txt

You can restore the above to get your existing disk with its existing MBR
partitions, if things do not work out as anticipated.

I am not aware of any scripts or automatic tools to do the MBR to GPT
conversion, but the approach you can use is to boot with a LiveUSB, convert
the partition table with gdisk[1] from MBR to GPT, recreate the partitions
with *exactly* the same start and finish sectors, make sure there is a FAT32
partition to be used as the UEFI boot partition and marked as partition type
EF00, before you install GRUB (or your bootloader) in this partition.

For a more detailed approach check the steps described by the developer of
gptfdisk[2].

Thanks for the fints, I'll try it this weekend, and post a feedback.

for a SSD for the OS as well.  10, 16 or 18TB drives, is a lot of space,

Is the  switch a reliable 1Gb switch? I've owned a couple of cheap switches
that said they
were 1Gb but didn't always work.

I'm using TRENDnet 24-Port Gigabit Switch

I had problem with slow connection to this PC using other switches, always slow
especially trying to initiate X2go session with this PC, it take about 25sec to
start session,
Trying to open X2go session with other PC on same network it take about 4sec.

But I think I'm not only the one having problem with this Intel adapter and igb
driver.

lspci -knn |grep net -A 4
04:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Intel Corporation I211 Gigabit Network
Connection [8086:1539] (rev 03)

The network speed on the switch is only 10Mbs or 100Mbs (orange light)

Thank you Michael for detail explanation.

So it seems to me that what I want to do will not work.

I have a static IP with Telus on a remote location (trying to save $10) and
whenever
IP on the remote location changes I would run a script that would send me an
email with a new IP address of the remote system.
But from what you are describing, it will not work.

"...If you change your IP address, or your PC/client, or anything else Google
are using
to fingerprint and profile your device, then you'll have to login again in
their GUI to confirm you are
who you are and your client is a legitimate device owned by you."

So if the remote IP will change I have to re-initiate the fingerprint profile
via
Google GUI. So much for trying to save $10.00 Any better solution for me, to
get a remote system new IP address.

Telus has a tendency of changing the static IP without any warning, it happened
to me in the middle of ssh connection with the remote system.
