I don't know, but the ebuild calls version 5 explicitly.

What happens if you add USE=-wallpapers to startkde in package.use?

Well, either you can try it to see what happens, maybe putting it back
afterwards, or you can remove that line from the ebuild - again,
temporarily. Or try the kde-sunset overlay as Dan suggests.

It's becoming steadily harder to stick with KDE-4 in Gentoo. I gave up a few
weeks ago, once I'd found a desktop arrangement to suit me.

Using -wallpapers worked and I still have wallpapers. 'layman -L' finds no
kde-sunset. I suppose I will at some stage have to install KDE5 on a laptop;
will KMail 4.4 still work?

I'm not sure how long that will take.
I've been running 5.7.4 without any obvious issues for a while now...

Attached is the "package.accept_keywords" file I use for 5.7.4

It's up to you to decide, but every time you log-out, you'll have the same
issue with 5.6...

plasma-desktop and its dependencies. I don't have kmail, kate, or any of

Hmm, okay. I have noticed some slowness when baloo is running, as
Fernando mentioned. I turned off file indexing, which does not seem to
have actually done anything.

Anyways, other than that, KDE for me runs very smoothly. Most of the
time, even when baloo is running full out, KDE itself is very
responsive. Qt Creator currently segfaults when I try to create a new
project or open a project, but other than that is generally responsive.

Which version of Qt Creator are you running?

And the next problem:

!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "kde-plasma/plasma-workspace-wallpapers:5"
have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
- kde-plasma/plasma-workspace-wallpapers-5.7.3::gentoo (masked by:
package.mask, ~amd64 keyword)
- kde-plasma/plasma-workspace-wallpapers-5.6.5::gentoo (masked by:
package.mask)

(dependency required by "kde-base/kdebase-startkde-4.11.22-
r2::gentoo[wallpapers]" [installed])
(dependency required by "@selected" [set])
(dependency required by "@world" [argument])

Why does kdebase-startkde:4 want plasma-workspace-wallpapers:5? has anyone
solved this yet?

Thanks

Somewhere in this thread they mentioned they're cleaning up old ebuilds,
so kde4 is requiring all sorts of kde5 ebuilds now.

You can try using the kde-sunset overlay for old kde4 builds. They've
been pretty good about moving stuff in there.

Hmm ... plasma-desktop was already installed, dragged in by plasma-meta. So
no need to reinstall it. Sadly trying to depclean after removing plasma-meta
will get rid of a lot of packages, something I'm not keen to do:

Re: [gentoo-user] KDE and the new plasma 5 thing

2016-04-13 Thread Dale
Howdy,

Same topic sort of so going to try the same thread first. I've run up
on something weird but I'm not real sure where to start looking. This
is what I do and what I get in return. I have my desktop set to folder
view which gives me icons on my desktop. When I click on a folder, it
is supposed to open Konqueror. It does, it really does open konqueror.
It opens it with dozens of instances and more than once went over 100
before I could kill the thing. Obviously, I only need one instance.

My question. What program actually tells it to launch that first
instance? In other words, when I click on a folder, what is it that
tells Konqueror to open? I think I'd like to downgrade that package for
a bit. It seems to have a bug, a really bad one with a lot of legs.

How I got here. Since the plasma thing was crashing so much, I thought
a unstable plasma package might have it fixed. Well, it stopped
crashing after I keyworded a long list of packages and did the upgrade.
Thing is, now I get this multiple instances of Konqueror instead of just
one. Here is a list of those packages.

I figure one of those packages is responsible for this but none of them

which one it could be?

Thanks.

OK, I had a closer look. Kernel 4.9.6-r1 is not the problem on at least two
boxen I just checked - I also tried a Macbook which keeps crashing at boot
time with this kernel, but that's for another post.

The USB problem is related to the latest updates I ran, which also coincided
with the kernel upgrade and this put me off the scent. I booted into 4.4.39
and the problem was still there on two different PCs.

I also booted into two different desktop managers, Plasma and Enlightenment.
The problem remained with both of them, whether I used KDE apps to mount the
USB stick or not.

As I mentioned, when I use pmount on the CLI I can mount the device. However,
when I used udisksctl, I got this:

$ udisksctl mount -b /dev/sdb
 AUTHENTICATING FOR org.freedesktop.udisks2.filesystem-mount ===
Authentication is required to mount Crucial Gizmo! overdrive (/dev/sdb)
Authenticating as: root
Password:

What?! This comes up with plain users, and users in the wheel group. This
makes me think the problem may be polkit related. These are the packages I
emerged last weekend:

[gentoo-user] now in blocked packages hell. =\

2016-03-06 Thread Alan Grimes
I guess I deserve congratulations for graduating from useflag hell. Now
I'm in blocked packages hell. I tried to cure it by uninstalling things
but now I've hit two packages that I consider to be high-priority...
though I've started using a windows 7 machine to access my cannon
camera.

Clearly, it is inconceivable that there is any possibility of updating
any package on this system until these two packages are uninstalled. =\
I mean, simply isolating the conflicting part of the package tree and
updating everything that isn't affected by those packages makes no sense
whatsoever and is a computationally intractable problem

tortoise ~ # ./pretendupdate

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

When I tried plasma and it crashed every 10 seconds I reverted and
manually masked all packages >4.15.

I figure eventually the instability will go away but decided to leave it
for another year or so. Heck, I may never update again. ;-) I like
having a desktop that just works.

I haven't tried updating recently (some months because I don't want to
deal with the plasma stuff now) though, so I don't know if it still works.

I've attached my package.mask if you want to try it. Talk about try to
solve updates with a sledgehammer though...

I think you'll also have to remove wallpapers in order to make portage
happy about conflicts:

[/etc/portage/package.use]
kde-base/kdebase-startkde -wallpapers
kde-apps/kdebase-meta -wallpapers

(Yes, it took forever to do that manually.)

I suspect it will probably not work now but it'll be a starting point if
you want to try this method. Maybe all you'll have to do is adjust some
versions?

Couldn't you just grab the kde 4.3 package.keyword list and append that
to package.mask, since it uses the same slot format?

Couldn't you just grab the kde 4.3 package.keyword list and append that
to package.mask, since it uses the same slot format?

Hello list,

In the last few days some parts of KDE v4 seem to have been moved
into the
stable tree, but on some of my boxes I want to exclude kde:4 (but not
qt:4).

What is the syntax for a single entry in package.mask to exclude the
whole of
kde:4? I did start masking each package separately, but that's far
too much
work - I'd finish up with an entry for every kde package that has a
version
4. Also, kde:4, which seems like the right thing to specify, is an
invalid
package atom according to eix.

I can't see anything relevant in man pages or the gentoo kde
configuration
guide. Google hasn't helped me either.

Portage unfortunately doesn't allow wildcards in the package name of
atoms. But you can install KDE4 on one machine and then use:

qlist -ISLC kde-base/*:4.3

to generate a list to put in package.mask in the machines you don't
want KDE4. On my machine, the above command results in the following

mask):

[gentoo-user] evil ebuilds.

2018-07-11 Thread Alan Grimes
Portage seems to be fairly OK right now but these ebuilds are really
really being evil... I've spent about half a day on this bullshit so I'm
in a really fine mood right now.

Here are my masks right now, much of my mask file is obsolete, these are
the ones I've been working with today.

All together 982 lines as above.
Besides that, gentoo amd64 works fine on my box and I emerge everyday packages
to upgrade, except those which are kde's.
Questions:
- what the hell is this mess, did I do something wrong ?
- have any of you got the same kind of troubles ?
- is there a way to go back to an up to date clean install, I mean besides
reinstalling from scratch or going for Ubuntu ?
Reasons that make me go for gentoo 8 or 9 years ago:
- excellent docs. (as of to-day, some docs need updating);
- easyness of maintenance, no need for periodical

[gentoo-user] resolving blocks from sets

2009-01-20 Thread Norberto Bensa
Hello list,

well. I couldn't resist and I emerged kde4.2 with something like this:

  sudo emerge @kdebase

Now I want to upgrade Qt to 4.5beta but (see below)

Is there any obvious way to solve this that can't see because it's 2AM
and need some sleep or are @sets _evil_ ?

And before you jump and tell me hey, just remove the packages and
update Qt see this:

$ sudo emerge -C kdm-4.1.96
Not unmerging package kde-base/kdm-4.1.96 as it is
still referenced by the following package sets:
kdebase

Do I _really_ need to do emerge -C @kdebase!?

sudo emerge @qt-all-4.5

Repost the output of your emerge command using the -t option.

Tip: tricky blockers often require that you post the output of 'emerge
-t'. Otherwise all we know is THAT you have a block and no way to
determine WHY it's happening. If you are going to post emerge output,
it's a excellent habit to do it with -t

You're right. Here it is* (you did ask :):

# USE=dbus qt4 emerge -upDvNt world

These are the packages that would be merged, in reverse order:

Attached.

Also what I have seen from your previous tree output is that you are
trying to do many things at one time. Upgrading to kde4 changing and
changing many use flags. This makes debugging very hard. Try to do only
 one thing at a time

That's only because one thing leads to another. All I wanted to do was to
install KDE-4; everything else I've tried has been to enable that. Of
course I do try to do only one thing at a time - I had half a lifetime of
debugging of one kind or another.

I started by running autounmask, as suggested by Neil B; that unmasked 81
packages. Then I tried to update world - 82 times: one for each other
package that needed unmasking. At the end of that I had all the packages
unmasked that were required for an upgrade to KDE-4, but I also had the
blocker that started this conversation. I've been trying to find the
conflict in dependencies ever since, with your help - thanks again.

Here's another titbit:
