I think Dolphin was remembering something, I closed all the Dolphin
windows and tried it again and it seems to be working. I'm pretty sure I
haven't used ssh to the phone before. I wonder what caused that...

I just tried pointing Dolphin at sftp://192.168.1.135: and logged in
using root and the set password.

Thanks for the tip. I installed SSHelper and was able to log in with
bash but Dolphin whines about the connection being broken with fish://
and with sftp:// it says the password is incorrect (it IS correct, I
used it from a bash prompt.) Any clues?

As it used to be implemented the phone would simply freeze. For some
reason this was seen as unacceptable. SSH helper is very interesting,
though.

The phone is connected by wifi to the same network as the computer.

I use SSH for one off copies, for syncing directories I use
net-p2p/syncthing.

That's interesting. What kind of network connection do you use?

No they can't, at least not the modern Android phones. allowing two
systems to mount the same filesystem is a recipe for disaster. That's why
we have MTP, which would be the perfect answer... if it worked reliably.

I avoid all those issues by installing SSHhelper on Android and copying
files with scp you can also open ssh views in Dolphin if the mouse is
more your thing.

Android and iphones can be accessed as a USB drive. Doesn't this work?

I found MTP unreliable both with Linux and MS Windows.

I'll try that later on, too busy digging in my yard. Stopped for a break.

I should mention I don't use kwallet, I turn that crap off.

The device doing all the prompting was the phone itself. The phone
usually would ask once for permission but it seems to ask so quickly you
can't respond to them causing the mtp driver to barf.

Unfortunately I don't have an installation to reproduce this with but
I'd blame the underlying MTP implementation first. It may have changed
unbeknownst to KDE and thus KDE tries to connect repeatedly, or KDE is
invoking it incorrectly. Is there anywhere you can see log messages?

When I was trying to actually use my mobile device as advertised it
was recommended I use the command line MTP tools - at the very least
this will give you better errors. More recently I've regressed to
using SD cards (and met a few people who do the same, even on
Windows), which can be a pain if it's behind the battery cover.

A long shot, but you never know if it will help in your case. (Re)install
kde-apps/kwalletd-16.04.3-r1 and see if all this multiple-asking for
permission goes away. It may just be that the KDE application in question was
working well with kwalletd:4, but not kwalletd:5.

[gentoo-user] KDE 5 MTP failure

2017-06-14 Thread Daniel Frey
Well, did I just have an exercise in frustration.

I needed to get a couple pictures off my phone (using MTP) so I plugged
it into my computer. It asked for permission on my phone, I allowed it -
then KDE reports the MTP process died.

So I tried a second time but faster tapping 'allow' on my phone and got
it to list directory contents.

I selected the five pictures I needed, and dragged and dropped them to
their destination (Pictures folder).

The phone then asked for permission five time in about 500ms - not
enough to allow them.

So the MTP process crapped out again.

I repeated this three times and cursed at KDE (it used to work, I
haven't had to copy files off my phone in more than six months) and
emailed them to myself.

Does anyone know why KDE/mtp would exhibit this type of behaviour?

Dan
