[gentoo-user] Scanner and weird streaking
Any chance you need to shield the scanner from light sources outside the scan head? Throw a dark jacket over it for testing.

Reduce exposure until the reverse side print dissipates, while the front remains clear enough. Alternatively, on a simpler set of controls playing with brightness and contrast could get you close enough. > >> At first, I thought it was something on the glass so I disassembled the > >> thing and cleaned it as best as I could. The pink hue is visible signal noise captured in the image. This may be internal, the scanner sensor is drifting outside its spec, or it could be some external source. Do you always use the scanner in the same position on your desk, or does it give different results depending on location? Okay, it's not cheap, but I like my HP MFP M477. Cost about £300 for the fdn model. Duplex printer, duplex scanner with document feed, cat-5 (don't think it's wireless). You can probably get similar cheaper ... The thing I really like scanner wise is I just set up a Samba share on my computer, configure the thing, and then I can just scan from the printer front panel and it appears on my computer automagically. I've come across the pink hue artefact on an old HP scanner, but can't recall the model. It is not related to the print of the opposite side becoming visible, which is caused by a high light exposure setting. You need to reduce the exposure to a level where you can see the primary print clear enough, without the back side bleeding through. > At first, I thought it was something on the glass so I disassembled the > thing and cleaned it as best as I could. The pink hue is probably due to the scanner bar going bad. Some fixes, which did not work in my case, are as follows: 1. Reset internal chipset: Plug it in, switch it on, then pull the power lead, followed by the USB. Wait for a minute or longer to discharge, then reconnect, power on and try to see if the problem is fixed. 2. Overheating: More of a problem in the summer. Use a desk fan while operating to see if it makes a difference. If none of the above work, then the scanner bar needs replacing. Probably time for a new scanner, unless you can find a donor scanner for the scanner bar. signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.
[gentoo-user] Scanner and weird streaking
Howdy all, I have a HP scanjet 4570c flatbed scanner. I bought it used years ago and most of the time, it works just fine. On occasion tho, I get something weird. When I scan something, it adds some pinkish colored streaks. I took a scrap sheet of paper and scanned the back of it. I used a magic marker on some text that was there, also drew a smiley face on it as well. Anyway, the side with print is on the opposite side. Basically, it is also seeing the back side of the paper. I'm not sure if that could cause this weird streaking but wanted to mention it. At first, I thought it was something on the glass so I disassembled the thing and cleaned it as best as I could. When I put it back together, I concentrated on the back side of the glass, since I have to disassemble it to clean it. I also clean the side the document goes on regularly. If it changed, I can't tell it. Another odd thing, the streaks change depending on the document. Sometimes you can barely see it, other times it is awful. I've not been able to reason out what makes the difference tho. I've got about the same results using Scanlite, Scanpage and XSane software. XSane may be a tiny bit better but it does vary at times. There's not a lot of settings available. I tend to use either 100dpi or 300 dpi for resolution thingy. I fiddled around a bit but it doesn't seem to help. This is a link to the page I described above. It's a little sizey so I didn't want to attach, for those who have email clients that puke a lot. lol https://freeimage.host/i/HTQLpWb You may notice that it is a little heavier at the top and gets lighter as it goes down. I've checked the glass, I can't find anything that would cause this. Is my scanner just going bad? Am I doing something wrong with a setting or something? Any ideas? Thoughts? Thanks. Dale :-) :-) P. S. After a couple weeks, my backup finished for that large directory on the NAS. I even did a update. It took a while but it's done. It would have been sooner but we had a power failure, or two. It got really cold here.

The user is a member of groups 'scanner' and 'plugdev', but was NOT a member of group 'usb'. While troubleshooting I added the user to the 'usb' group, which allowed the scanner to be detected again, but I do not understand why this sudden change in group ownership is now required. Re: [gentoo-user] scanner problem : latest
(1) I've tested 'iscan' & the result is the same failure as 'xsane'. (2) I've checked the contents of /etc/sane.d as they are now, as they were at my last back-up before 180626 (when scanning worked) & as they are in the Mint partition, where scanning still works : there's no significant difference between the 3 versions. (3) Following one suggestion, I tried renaming ~/.sane , but that makes no difference either. (4) I've run 'strace' with 'iscan' & on the Mint system : the output is at http://chass.utoronto.ca/~purslow/test/xsane-trace.d1 & the other 2 "trace" files there. The Mint version seems to find a file in /usr/share/iscan-data , which the others don't find, but that file is present in my Gentoo system. Does anyone have experience interpreting Strace output files ? When I updated the kernel recently, I also had to update Nvidia-drivers. Is it possible that that could have affected Xsane + Iscan ? Re: [gentoo-user] scanner problem
Thanks for the replies so far, which I've followed up with ideas of my own. (1) In /etc/sane.d/dll.conf (at the end) it lists # Add support for the Epson-specific backend. Needs media-gfx/iscan installed epkowa I've installed 'iscan', but it makes no difference. (2) The 2 pkgs which mb relevant & which have been updated > 180626 are the kernel & 'gtk+:2' : syslog reports use of 'ehci-pci', but that is enabled in my kernel 4.14.52 ; might 'gtk' be the problem ? (3) I can scan without problems using Mint Xfce (on another partition), so it's not a hardware problem. (4) 'lsusb' lists "Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0418: 013b Seiko Epson Corp". (5) the 'epkowa' driver is the latest version : a download from 'support.epson.net/linux/en/iscan.php?model=perfection-v550=1.0.1' gets the same compressed files as are already installed (same sizes). (6) the output from 'strace' is at http://chass.utoronto.ca/~purslow/test/xsane-trace.d1 . (7) When the scanner is switched on (already connected), syslog says : usb1-3: new high-speed USB device number 3 using ehci-pci New USB device found, idVendor 04b8, idProduct 013b strings: MFr=1, Product=2, SerNo=0 Product: EPSON Scanner; Manufacturer: EPSON (8) Users at Ubuntu have been having problems starting Autumn 2017 : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sane-backends/+bug1728012 : see esp # 20 & # 144 . Depending on which syslogger you use, create /var/log/debug with debug-level output (no idea how to do this with systemd), zero the log, and tail -f it while you plug in the scanner, try to use it. I normally keep /var/log/messages w/ *.info, auth.none and have logrotate switch it out frequently (daily) at 1MiB. You only need it once to make it worth the disk space :-) Try: ( strace sane /var/tmp/sane.strace.out 2>&1; and see what it's trying to open when it fails to get the file. It might not be the device itself that is botching the process but a secondary file that got stepped on. Try: find /etc -name '._cfg*'; any of them affect scanning, dbus, usb (anything else that might be used by sane)? -- Steven Lembark 1505 National Ave Workhorse Computing Rockford, IL 61103 lemb...@wrkhors.com+1 888 359 3508
[gentoo-user] scanner problem
My scanner -- Epson Perfection V550 Photo -- is suddenly not detected : when I enter 'xsane' (via the menu or Alt-F2), it says "no devices available". I last used it without any problem 180626. Since then, I've updated my kernel & some other pkgs. I've checked the USB physical connection ; the scanner 'ready' light is on. I've remerged 'xsane' & 'sane-backends' & rebooted. Following my notes, I've done : root:500 ~> sane-find-scanner ... found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8 [EPSON], product=0x013b [EPSON Scanner]) at libusb:001:004 # Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. # It may or may not be supported by SANE. # Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage. root:501 ~> scanimage -L device `epkowa:interpreter:001:004' is a Epson Perfection V550 Photo flatbed scanner The first time I ran these commands (I don't remember which), the scanner itself made the noises it usually does when starting. This model needs a driver which is not included in 'sane-backends' & which I downloaded from Nvidia & installed when I got the scanner 2017. [gentoo-user] scanner hotplug permissions torture
I have just acquired an Epson 1660 Photo scanner and I am having real trouble setting the permissions. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find a howto that explains clearly how you are supposed to get permissions sorted out using hotplug with more recent 2.6 kernels. There's something about a script in /etc/hotplug/usb, but nothing I can find that tells you what you are supposed to do with it. The scanner works fine when run as root. The permssions of the usb device (/proc/usb/001/004 right at the moment) are -rw-rw root:scanner However, even though user robert is a member of group scanner, he can't get sane even to recognise the scanner. He can do it though if he chmods to root:users or root:audio or to most of the other groups he is a member of. On the other hand there are some other groups of which he is a member which don't seem to be able to access the scanner -- floppy and adm for instance. Does anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong? Re: [gentoo-user] scanner hotplug permissions torture
I found a solution and I have posted it at http://gentoo-wiki.com/Talk:HOWTO_Install_a_USB_scanner#.22The_above_udev_rules_are_wrong..22. If anybody who knows their hotplug and udev stuff better than I do could take it upon themselves to correct the usb scanner howto itself (http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Install_a_USB_scanner), which is very confusing and misleading, I'm sure there will be good few people out there who will be very grateful to you. (And not just Gentoo users -- there is a real lack of up-to-date usb scanner documentation out there.) [gentoo-user] Scanner Trouble
Hi, When I first installed Gentoo on my main machine about a month ago, my scanner was working just fine. I don't use it that much, but today when I went to use it (using xsane), I got a message that no devices were found. I checked dmesg and as far as I can tell, there doesn't seem to be anything wrong. The only thing that I did that might have affected it (although it doesn't seem to have affected anything else) is: emerge --update --deep mozilla-firefox (because there was an updated Firefox package) When I did this, emerge updated 26 packages including some x packages, so I don't know if this is what is causing the problem. The scanner works in Window - I tested it to be sure that it wasn't a scanner problem. Additionally, I used to have this problem when I ran FC4 all the time. I have a USB printer, zip drive and game pad all connected to my system and all work fine. The scanner is USB as well and in FC4, I used to always have to remove the usb cable and plug it back in again and then I could get xsane to recognize the scanner. However, I tried that and had no luck. Any ideas? Regards, Colleen -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
