Hi! Good news for me and all nvidia + compiz fan!!
I have just upgraded my gentoo box to xorg 7.4 + nvidia 177.80 and
compiz-fusion 0.7.8 and everyting is working like a charm!
Using kde3.5.9 or gnome everyting is fast and stable.
The command
nvidia-settings -a InitialPixmapPlacement=2 -a
