allocated to another card so
makes this one eth1. Just delete the file as
mentioned previously to have
udev forget about the old card and start again with
eth0.

pardon me if you've already tried this: does the
LiveCD/InstallCD boot? And can you mount the usb stick
then? Then you can probe the hardware using the
LiveCD/InstallCD tools, cat /proc/..., lsusb, dmesg
etc to get some clues. Leastwise you'll know that it's
not a hardware problem.

Forgot to add: this all started when I made hda into
hdb and vice versa by changing the jumpers on the two
IDE drives in this particular PC and telling the BIOS
to boot from the 2nd drive. And updating grub and
fstab, of course.
