So basically what you are saying is that GM is only be able to access
the files on the internet and/or some private shared network. So it
cannot be used for accessing local files on a HDD, right? Correct me
if I'm wrong. Are there no workarounds? Please suggest some.

Because the syntax has to be there, and defined, even if most of the
time it will have no effect.
