For 16th c. goldwork, I recall finding information on supplies and such by Googling Purl -- It seems to be referred to that way in some of the textile books, and you can still get the gold threads in different shapes and textures. As for Or Nue, it was primarily for ecclesiastical use -- gold

For REALLY cheap stuff to practice with, I've seen (and have a stash of) Christmas decorations that look like a slightly larger and coarser version of rough perl. It's sold in packets as a look-alike for tinsel. It is metal (I have some in pure copper and some in another metal colored blue).
