[ha-Safran]: Jewish Art
Dear Safranim: In my community there s a wonderful sofer, David Lipschitz, who is a South African married to a woman from my area. They lived in Sfat for 10 years and relocated here last year for family reasons. Earlier this winter he slipped on ice, dislocated his shoulder and was out of work for a month. This was a real act of G-d accident with no liability on anyone s part. Although his wife works, they have several children and he had to borrow money to get by during the time he was disabled. To help out this wonderful family I ve put some of his work up on my webpage. Lipschitz and a Sfat husband-wife artist team have created two gorgeous, illuminated kosher megillot that are for sale at $8,000 and $5,000 and he has prints of one that go for $40. They re truly examples of Judaica art, suitable for framing. They would look spectacular on a large wall, and of course the kosher ones can be used on Purim. Take a look at www.geshelin.com and click on Jewish Art. Lipschitz writes Torahs, tefillin, and mezuzahs and also checks and corrects scribal work. Hanna Geshelin, M.Ed. P.O. [ha-Safran]: Book for youngsters on Holocaust Immigrants
There have recently been several requests for books suitable for youngsters on the holocaust and on Jewish immigrants. I would like to suggest my book, JUST ONE: Connecting With a Grandmother's Life, published last year. It is a novelization of the true stories of my maternal grandmother, my mother, and myself. The book encompasses the joys and pains of life in a small village in Poland, death and survival in the holocaust, and the struggle to start anew in the U.S. Although I did not consciously intend to write for children, Just One has received favorable response of readers of all ages, from eleven to ninety-three. Here are three reviews: At a time when there are increasingly fewer witnesses to tell the youngest generation about the Shoah, it is important that there be ways of conveying the facts without either sugarcoating them or making them impossible for the young to assimilate. In retelling the story through the eyes of a growing child, Esther Erman brings the past to life in an accessible way... She brings to life the relationship between three generations of women who are familiar to all of us... This is a story that rings true, especially to those who grew up with or near survivors... This is a novel that would...be welcome in any library to give insight into the Holocaust and survivor generation. -- Association of Jewish Libraries Newsletter, Nov/Dec, 2003 With her gifts as a storyteller and as a terrific writer, Esther Erman has transformed the experiences and tales of her family into a compelling, moving, life-filled novel. Through the struggles, joys and sorrows of one family, she has given us a novel that captures the experience of European Jewry in the last century. This book is a remarkable achievement. --Arthur Kurzweil, author of From Generation to Generation: How to Trace Your Jewish Genealogy Family History This isn't the type of book I would normally pick off a shelf because I don't like historicals. I like science fiction mostly. I liked it so much that I made time to read it. I'm glad I read it. I would tell my friends to read this book. -- S.F., 13 years old, California (non-Jewish) My website -- http://EstherErman.com -- has more information, including some excerpts and ordering information (available in trade paperback and electronic formats). It also has photos of the real people whose stories are told in the novel. ..Esther -- Esther Erman -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] - JUST ONE: Connecting with a Grandmother's Life -- Zumaya Publications See http://www.EstherErman.com for excerpts, photos, ordering == HaSafran - The Electronic Forum of the Association of Jewish Libraries Submissions for HaSafran, send to: Hasafran at lists.acs.ohio-state.edu SUBscribing, SIGNOFF commands send to: Listserver at lists.acs.ohio-state.edu Questions, problems, complaints, compliments;-) send to: galron.1 at osu.edu AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org/
Re: [ha-Safran]: Haggadot from the South before the Civil War
At 18:10 03/23/04, sdubin wrote: I have a patron who is interested in finding out if the haggadot used in the Southern states before the Civil War were different in any way from the haggadot used there after the Emancipation Proclamation. Any idea where I could look? I did a quick search for any haggadot printed in the US before 1865. I found only one. Seder Hagadah shel Pesah : 'im tirgum Ashkenazi = Die Pessach Hagada. Imprint New York : H. Frank, 1850. and one shortly after the war http://norman.spertus.edu:4505/ALEPH/KNAD6E2H31VFVPUQ7I8RNA4RNR7KQN2F6KVXDLKNIUXN93LI2D-00391/FIND-ACC/79893Wise, Isaac Mayer, 1819-1900. Hymns, psalms and prayers, in English and German by Isaac M. Wise and others. Imprint Cincinnati, Bloch Co. Publishers and Printers [c1868] Notice that both were publishing with a German translation. Neither of these are in my collection. Since prayer books and haggadot were not printed in this country much before the early 1900's, I doubt that one could find any differences in before and after the Civil War. Hebrew Publishing Company Published their first haggadah in 1912. If you want to be sure then use a more comprehensive search. [ha-Safran]: Books on Antisemitism
Toronto has experienced a series of Anti Semitic acts of vandalism and desecration of a Jewish cemetery in the last 2 weeks. Perhaps many of you are aware of this. In light of this, the Toronto Public Library is developing a bibliography on Antisemitism. I have been asked to spearhead this. I have a very short turn around time, and would appreciate any suggestions for this list. It will need to include not only Adult level materials, but also titles for teens and children. They should be titles that are appropriate for a broad general public, and preferably published within the past 5 years. Thank you all very much.
