[ha-Safran] video teaching peace

2023-10-19 Thread Karen Hering via Hasafran
I am hoping someone can help - a friend has a niece currently doing a MEd
at a Canadian university. Her prof showed a video of a Palestinian teacher
talking to the elementary aged kids in her class about peace. The teacher
was willing to show but unable to find a video showing an Israeli teacher
teaching about peace in Israel. Would anyone know of such a video (in
English or with English subtitles) that could be shown?
Thank you
Karen Hering

[ha-Safran] Looking for a book of ethical questions for high school students

2023-06-18 Thread Karen Hering via Hasafran
Are you familiar with
Stories for the sake of argument

by Robbie Gringras and Abi Dauber Sterne?
Most of the scenarios are ethical questions though not titled that way.
Here is a review

from the Jewish Book Council. There is lots of information on the Internet
about this workshop/book.

Re: [ha-Safran] Hasafran Digest, Vol 567, Issue 5

2022-12-02 Thread Karen Hering via Hasafran
Dear Elaine,
I buy lots of Hebrew children's books for our day school library (K-6) and
board books for our ELC. I have ordered them or bought them when I am Israel
because we live in western Canada and not near any good outlet for Hebrew kids
books. I am happy to chat with you further about Hebrew picture books, series,
chapter books and novels I have bought, both fiction and none.

Hello All,

Does anyone know of lists of Hebrew language books for children of all ages? A
patron is looking for materials in Hebrew to help develop fluency in speech and
comprehension for English-speakers. As an example of the genre, they
mentioned books by Galila Ron-Feder Amit (specifically the Gingi and Tuli
Ta'alooli series), although many of those are out of print. A more recent
example would be the Sha'ah shel Menucha series by Menucha Fuchs. To narrow the
question further, are there libraries where these types of books could be
circulated, instead of patrons needing to purchase them?
Thanks for any leads.

Elaine

Dear AJL members,

The previous issue of Judaica
Librarianship, AJL’s peer-reviewed journal was published during the height of the COVID
pandemic in 2020. The pause in publishing caused by COVID-related drawbacks is
almost over… Please watch your email for a note about the publication of JL 22
in the next few weeks.

Volume 22 addresses the question of provenance in Jewish libraries and archives
on multiple levels, presenting possible solutions to ethical considerations
concerning the origin of individual items or complete collections. These issues
are explored in a number of research articles, essays, and reviews. Other
topics covered in this volume are Jewish bookstores, children's literature,
libraries catering to or reviewed by Yiddish readers, and last but not least
our own association, with one essay about Judaica catalogers and another on
AJL’s copping with COVID as an organization. The 2-year gap is summarized in
our digital humanities and literature review columns, and a tribute to Heidi
Lerner.

I thank Nancy Sack for volunteering her crucial copyediting services to JL and
Nadav Sharon for his editorial assistance.

Work on Volume 23 is underway as well, continuing to focus on issues of
provenance. Please check JL’s
About page for the journal’s focus and scope: we are interested in publishing
high-quality papers and essays about Jewish informational literacy, development
and management of Judaica collections, curation and dissemination of
information resources, book history and bibliography, and related fields. For
questions and consultations, please contact me.

To be continued later this month –

[ha-Safran] Thoughts on "A Time to celebrate"

2022-05-12 Thread Karen Hering via Hasafran
Thank you to everyone who provided comments concerning this book. The
comments were varied and informative, offering the gamut of perspectives,
but mostly validated my uncomfortable feelings. We have decided to remove
both old and new editions from our collection, discard the old one and keep
the new one with backnotes in our workroom in the offchance we were ever
asked to do a presentation on integrating appropriate Holocaust picture
books into a curriculum. So thankful for this listerv.

[ha-Safran] thoughts on "Let the celebration begin"

2022-05-03 Thread Karen Hering via Hasafran
Our school library has just received a donation of a book called "A time
for toys" by Margaret Wild - It has been more recently been published under
the title "Let the Celebration begin". Though the front covers are
different, the rest of the book is the same. In view of lots of discussion
about who should write Holocaust books, the softening of the horrors of the
camps, and where the focusof such stories sit, I am curious to know how
people feel about this book. The illustrations (and narrative honestly)
make me feel uncomfortable though I cannot explain why, and the more recent
edition has a rationale and background in the back by the author and
illustrator. They talk about the sensitivity of the illustrations and
storyline, but I am somewhat uncomfortable with the whole book. I would
appreciate others' thoughts and insights, and whether you have put it in
your library.
Thank you

[ha-Safran] Hebraica cataloguing

Is there an online Hebrew romanization or Hebraic cataloguing course currently
available now? Hearing about the value of the 3week course taught by Bella Haas
Weinberg, I would be interested if such a thing were available online now.
