Re: [ha-Safran] Seeking Holocaust book for grades 6-7 as a class read

2020-09-22 Thread LOIS RUBY via Hasafran
Hello, all, and g'mar chatimah tovim,
I've poured over the lists of Holocaust books suitable for grades 6 and 7 that
have been sent around recently and am disappointed to see that my book is not
on the list. SHANGHAI SHADOWS offers a unique perspective as it's a novel about
a family uprooted from their Austrian home and propelled across the world to
China. The main character, Ilse, is a spunky girl who ages from 9 to 15 through
the war. She makes the most of life in a grim Shanghai ghetto by going
underground as a spy. So, it's a family story, a spy story, even a
heart-tugging romance, and it's available in hardcover, paperback, and ebook.
Please add it to your lists!
Thanks,
LOIS RUBY

Re: [ha-Safran] name of a book

2020-01-18 Thread LOIS RUBY via Hasafran
I remember Uncle Misha's Partisans very well from my days at a KS synagogue.
One major memory attached to that book is that a special kid, a 5th grader, had
severe asthma and was admitte4d to National Jewish Hospital in Denver for an
extended stay away from his family. I sent him that book, and we had lots of
correspondence to discuss it. (Before email, of course). That "kid" is now 54,
and he still remembers that book with great fondness and remembers how it
sealed a bond between us. So, I hope this is the book your colleague is looking
for!

Three books I highly recommend as quality YA fiction:
HUSH, by Eishes Chayil, AKA Judy Brown (read it before you recommend it to
younger teens)
MAPPING THE BONES, by Jane Yolen
SHANGHAI SHADOWS, by me, Lois Ruby
B'shalom

Re: [ha-Safran] library services for religious school

2016-06-28 Thread Lois Ruby
Thanks for asking, Emily. Here's a list I used with 4th grade partners who had
20 minutes to find the treasures, with a couple of "gimme" questions to keep
them interested and to make it fun (while it's also constructive):

TREASURE HUNT

1. Title of a cookbook for Passover

2. Call number of a book about bar/bat mitzvah

3. In TEEN section, title of a graphic novel

4. Any book with 5 words in the title

5. How many volumes of the Zohar do we have? (Hint: blue covers, REFERENCE)

6. Title of any little kids’ picture book with more than 3 copies

7. What's your favorite flavor of ice cream?

8. Title of a book by a local author (Extra points if it's by a local rabbi!)

9. How many DVD’s are on the shelf? Name one of them

10. Title of a book about a Jewish holiday that occurs in the fall season

11. Title of any book in the HUMOR section

12. What’s a movie you've seen more than 3 times?

Do we have a copy in our collection? Yes? No? If No, Why not?

13. What color is the book jacket of the novel The Chosen? (Hint: FICTION)

14. Find one book in the JUVENILE section that is also in your school library.
Title?:

15. Title of a book about the Yiddish language

16. Did Moses have a last name? Yes? No? If No, give him one!

THANKS FOR PLAYING - Come back often!

Re: [ha-Safran] library services for religious school

2016-06-28 Thread Lois Ruby
We don't do a whole lot, though someone reads stories to the little guys. But
once a month I meet with the 4th-7th grades separately. My goal in those short
sessions is to introduce the kids to general Jewish literature, so we read
aloud and discuss stories and/or poems by noted authors such as I.L. Peretz and
I.B. Singer, with some info on their lives, the Yiddish language, their themes
and how they relate to Jewish values, etc. I also introduce the kids to stock
characters, such as the fools of Chelm and the righteous man in the guise of a
beggar, and I like to do something on humor. (Whatever engages those rascals!)
Occasionally I'll talk about a contemporary middle grade or Y.A. book to bring
up discussion topics. Oh, and one other thing I do at the beginning of each
school year for the 4th and 5th graders is a "treasure hunt" through the
library. I give them a list of things to find, and they work in pairs to fill
out their list. It's a pretty lively activity! Though I'm a professional
librarian (retired now to write full time), like the rest of our "staff," I'm a
volunteer so I don't get to meet with the kids as often as I'd like to. Still,
we do what we can, eh? Good luck!

Re: [ha-Safran] THE JEWS OF CHINA [???]

2015-07-19 Thread Lois Ruby
Is this the book you're looking for?

The Jews of Kaifeng, China: History, Culture, and Religion,
by Xu Xin.

I had the pleasure of traveling to Kaifeng with Mr. Xu a few years back to meet
indigenous Chinese people who claim to be descendants of the Jews of China
whose history goes back to about the 12th century. He holds the equivalent of
the Chair of Judaica at Nanjing University, and he periodically plans symposia
on Jewish cultural matters for Chinese professors across the country. A most
interesting gentleman!

The story Stone Soup is found in many cultures, including ours. I just did a
quick peek at Amazon and found many versions. The book Sheryl is talking about
is Could Anything Be Worse? I know of two Jewish versions of it, the other
called It Could Always Be Worse, I think. I'm sure this has a generic version

I know a story, but unfortunately I don’t remember the names.

There is a story about a person who complained to his rabbi that his house
was too small and the rabbi told him to bring in his chickens, his goat, his
cow, his horse etc. When the man blew up that now his house was way way way
too crowded the rabbi told him to take out the chickens, goat, cow, horse,
etc and suddenly the house seemed much bigger!

I’ve seen several different versions with either the rabbi, or just a generic
 wise man.

 Subject: Re: [ha-Safran] Multicultural stories

 Hello Friends,

I have been asked to assist a teacher of multicultural literacy at a local
college by reading to her students two versions of the same children’s
story, one Jewish and one something else. I have been looking through my
sources, but am having trouble finding something, so I am turning to you.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

 Thank you,

Re: [ha-Safran] Non-Jewish speakers

2014-01-09 Thread Lois Ruby
I'm stunned by the notion that Rachel's committee would object to having this
non-Jewish (and worthy) author speak. Yes, we need to support our local Jewish
authors. In fact, my library committee is sponsoring its second Author Panel
wherein local Jewish authors who write on mostly secular topics discuss their
work. However, a library represents first and foremost the literature, not the
author. Let's look at it from a different perspective. I am a Jewish author,
and I am currently invited to speak at two Catholic schools. They apparently
don't feel they need to support only Catholic writers. So, I say invite Grace
Tiffany and promote it robustly! L OIS RUBY www.loisruby.com Author of ...

 Subject: [ha-Safran] Non-Jewish speakers
 Dear Hasafranim,
We have a respected professor and historical novelist in town -- Grace
Tiffany -- who just wrote a book called Paint set during the
Shakespearean era, the protagonist being a part Jewish, part Italian
female poet. According to the author herself, the Jewish content is
minimal. However, she also wrote an earlier book, based on The
Merchant of Venice called The Turquoise Ring, which is primarily
 Jewish.
I'm considering inviting her to speak, but one member of my library
committee suggested that, as a Jewish institution, it would be best to
 support Jewish authors exclusively. Such a thing never occurred to me;
to me, as long as the scholarship and perspective is sound, then the
author should have something of great value to impart.
I'm curious as to what others have done and considered regarding
 non-Jewish speakers.

[ha-Safran] Holocuast books for grades 4-8

2012-12-18 Thread Lois Ruby
Gee, I was hoping someone would recommend my book so I wouldn't have to toot my
own horn, but here goes. I suggest Shanghai Shadows, a novel about the 20,000
Jewish refugees who escaped to China and spent the duration of the war in
Shanghai, under Japanese occupation. It's a little-known story and a welcome (I
hope) departure from the European angle. The Jews in Shanghai weren't targeted
for extermination, but they were forced into a ghetto, where they formed a rich
and varied culture under extremely difficult circumstances.

Thanks for considering the book ...

2012-06-05 Thread Lois Ruby
This thread has been so helpful to me as I begin the daunting task of
automating a 5,000 volume library at my synagogue -- after being retired for

This page on the AJL Wiki,

, about automation systems for synagogue libraries, resulted from a

links to the web sites of most of the systems mentioned.

Subject: [ha-Safran] Automation for small synagogue library
 Dear Hasafranim,
I am writing on behalf of a small synagogue in Lansing Michigan with a
collection of about 2000 books (they classify with Elazar) . They are
thinking of automating, but need advice. While I know this question
has been posted many times before, (and I checked out the AJL Wiki on
the subject), I wonder if there is more recent and detailed info I can
provide. The Wiki is from 2001 and is simply a listing of library
 automation companies without commentary.
We use ResourceMate and so I can comment on my experience, but I
wondering if anyone else can suggest programs suitable for a small
 library and share his/her experiences.
 Thanks,
