So what can i do about them? And why isn't VALVE doing something? Ive seen
allot of fakeservers, cant you patch it somehow?.. They are hurting our name

Valve is doing nothing, nor should they be. People have the right to
name their server whatever they'd like.

unless it's against the law (aka trademark law, etc.)
if the community name is trademarkedand you give Valve legal
noticeperhaps maybe...
then againValve should have policies in place for CyberSquatting much
like ICANN..in cases where a third-party uses a name that they have no

Hello, I am trying to use steam://connect/ links in my TF2 MOTD. They do not
work. Was this function disabled, and how can I work around it?
When a user joins my server, it will have a few options querying my other
servers, to list what servers have what number of players. It's a lot easier
Check their IP addresses. I bet they are illegal or cracked.

Why shouldn't VALVE fix it?
Its fake, the server isn't really there and the players isn't there. The
servers is there only for advertise in serverbrowser.
Its not about the names, its about the serverlist getting BIG and messy. Its
harder to find good REAL servers that works.
any steam:// link has been disabled some months ago in the in-game browser.
I think there's no workaround

Did this happen when they moved to Webkit?
I think Valve have left out all kinds of custom protocols from the
Webkit based browser. I'm still waiting for mumble://-support for
instance. I don't know if custom protocol URLs will be supported
again, but I sure hope so.

As I remember there was an update that fixed error messages about missing
particles. But dods still reports about them.
Particles: Missing 'particles/error.pcf'
Particles: Missing 'particles/fire_01.pcf'
Particles: Missing 'particles/burning_fx.pcf'
Can anyone edit particles file and remove
no, for tf2 it happened before moving to webkit.
it was done on purpose to stop motd redirect

I wouldn't bother with the lawyers, just trademark it and then just ask valve.
If they don't do anything, then get the lawyers.
Always make sure that you have your trademarks in order, or else someone can
just come along and trademark it for you and basically take over your
community name. AG

Lawyers will do nothing. Valve isn't hosting those fake servers.
Someone is, so track down IP, and call ISP that IP belongs to.
And if someone is faking Valve's master server list, it isn't Valve fault.
Every communication is possible to interrupt and master server
communication is not an
Or just harden up.
Try contacting the server owners and ask them what the deal is.
Appreciated people want to grow strong communities, but posting on a
mailing list is not going to help.
The most you can do is contact VALVe *i.e not this mailing list* and
make them aware of the fake server
Valve controls the master sever list. They don't like fake server either. Let
them know and see what happens. It can't hurt.

There are three main reasons for some douche to run a fake server:
1) steal traffic from rival communities
2) damage reputation/image of targeted community/server
3) to spread malware via a MotD vulnerability
Though the 3rd is less likely nowandays, back in the day, I ran into

Well, Christopher said the server isn't actually there. And that it is
basically only used to advertise in the server browser. So 1 is out of
the question, and 3 is (as you said yourself) no longer an issue.
Which leaves me with 2. Which is pretty fucked up :P

That always doesn't cut it though, as there are semi-popular servers

Can anyone, technically, tell me what high FPS is supposed to do? After
reading through the technical documents on valve's site, there is no mention
to server FPS in any performance context, at all. The only thing it mentions
is how the server tickrate influences precision of operations. I do know
As I understand it FPS vs Tick works something like this:
66 Tick means 66 times per second, the game world updates what's going
on based on the incoming events as they're timestamped.
I'm led to believe the fames per second is how often the server goes
through and timestamps stuff to be
