I have a quick question I was hoping someone could answer. This is probably
documented out there somewhere but I can't find it. When I allocate a PDS in
blocks for example with DCB values of
LRECL=80,blksize=27920,space=(27920,(6,2,10)), I notice that an extra couple of
blocks (1 track) is added
Never mind, I found it documented in the JCL manual. Sorry about that.

I once worked in an Assembler shop where the manager forbade the use of
BXH/BXLE because he couldn't grasp how they worked. I did get to see
some interesting dumps caused by BCT(R) loops gone awry, though. :-)
So are you saying that Ditto lies?

Hi All. Question. Would anyone know the BPI of a 3480 cart running on
3480E drive (mock 3490). We have a request from a user to send us a
38,000 bpi cart. I swear they are 6250 bpi. Can anyone clear this up for

Currently we deliver our software in 3480 cartridge IEBCOPY format
and in CD XMIT format.
We would ike to change our very very old 3480 tape drives to 3590.
3590s are definitely not universal. With the advent of 3592 and STK
drives, many sites may have no 3590s, or 3480s for that matter.

I have had that problem since way before I got old (or at least older). The
two main reasons why I write lots of comments
I found a few references to some 3490E talking about the recording
density of 37,871 BPI

Bill, I totally agree. While I knew (I'm old, too) all the clever things I
could do in ASM/HLASM in OS/360 == early z/OS througout my career as a
sysprog writing system level code, it was imperative that I documented all
of my code and used documented operating system interfaces (even SVC
