Your shop sounds like a good candidate for HSM. If you HSM backup a file,
the user only has to know the DSN to get the various available backup
(backup or dump).
Without HSM, you could keep DCOLLECT 'D' records and determine VOLSER from
that or DSS RESTORE the tape with NORUN and parse the SYSOUT to see if the
DSN is on the tape. Since it's probably multifile tape, you'll have to
account for this.

Re: Moving 3390-3 to 3390-9

2008-07-16 Thread Jack Kelly
Moving the DSNs with DSS/FDR should be easy enough. You shouldn't need
SMS, but hard to image that kind of volume and not SMS. You can tell DSS
to move to a pool of DASD, you specify the VOLSERs and the amount of space
to use. But your scenario seem more like a logical move, and recatalog, of
2-3 Mod3 to 1 Mod9 but you could move numerous MOD3 to several MOD9. If a
DSN is allocated, it won't move. So a repetitive process should get them
all moved.

I set the DYNAMIC DASD INFO to NO and then specified the device type and
device address and VSN in the SUMP. All seems well but I get VOLS in the

Is there a way to go thru the Modify System Layout portion without having

We're always behind the curve, so I'm just using extended format(EF). I'm
trying to replace the Stop x37/DIF methodology with EF. I'm using EF for
x37 reasons, not striping or greater than 4GB, and access is via QSAM.
Other than the candidate entries for each dataset is there any major draw
backs, eg HSM, FTP'ing, restoring? And will an EF mutivolume dataset be
restored to a single volume if it's copied or HSM recalled?

Doing some testing, I did find one thing that has me puzzled. I created a
trk=(1,1) EF dataset and the EOV routine got control after 149 extents on
two volumes. It allocates the 123 extents on one volume and then 26 on the
second volume, there was plenty of room on the second volume as the next
test indicated. I removed the EOV exit and it wrote 123 extent on each of
the three volumes.

HSM dump error

2008-05-07 Thread Jack Kelly
Does this scenario seem to be true and if so what do other sites do to get
a good dump, eg trap msgARC0623I or msgARC0624I and issue a BACKVOL with
DUMP option?

It appears that HSM will redump a DASD volume if it encounters a tape
error on the first file of a tape or more precisely with the first open of
a tape. If HSM/DSS gets an error after the first file (stacked real tape)
then the dump of that DASD volume fails and the remaining DASD volumes go
to a new tape and the tape with the error is closed. So you lose the dump
of the DASD volume that had the tape error.

Check your dump logs. I have found that HSM will retry the failed dump
at some point prior to the end of dump processing.

That's what I thought but it didn't. I even looked at the FSRs and the
only occurrence is for the dump failure. When it's the first file on the
tape and gets an error, there are two FSRs, one with the error and one
with c/c=0.
I don't know if it makes a difference that I have two dumpclasses for each
volume, a local and a D/R copy. But it was that way when HSM redumped OK.

Re: IDMS batch jobs getting increased dispatching priority

2008-04-15 Thread Jack Kelly
 snip
IDMS mechanism to serialize batch usage
 snip

Just thought that I'd give a final update to this issue in case it's of
any interest to other parties.
IDMS batch indeed serializes on a planned ENQ conflict. 'Enqueue
Promotion' notifies SRM and SRM boost the service of the holder (in this
case the IDMS batch job) for ERV (default: 500 CPU SU's). In our scenario,
the batch IDMS jobs were executing at a higher dispatching priority than
the rest of batch, even as high as the IDMS', even though these batch jobs
were in a discretionary Service Class. Since I had the default ERV, i.e.
no IEAOPTxx member, and we have a small processor, these batch job ate the
box. I did turn off ERV and the processing smoothed out, changing it to a
much smaller number made things less worse but not better.
Of course CA thinks that this is an IBM problem, IBM rightly (I think)
disagrees, and CA can not (or won't) change the way IDMS serializes batch
work (it's worked for years, so why change!).

What I didn't get from the first post was if this just started happening
or not.
 snip

This appears to have happened periodically. The remedy has been to start
changing srvclass and that made everyone happy-nothing changed but they
felt like they were doing something.
I got involved yesterday and Mark's suggested APARs was good but we don't
use wlm inits and we're at MIM11.5. Received and applied them to our
sandbox though.
Really looks like the problem is IEAOPTxx ERV default and IDMS enque
'conflict'. On a small box that is a large portion. Reduced it to a
reasonable number, at least in my world, and it's mitigated the problem.
Now going to check with IBM and CA to see if there's a way to exempt some
qnames from ERV consideration- yeah right!

IDMS batch jobs getting increased dispatching priority

2008-04-10 Thread Jack Kelly
Up front, I have to say that I know less than zero about IDMS and I was
hoping to keep it that way.
We have a rash of batch jobs extracting data from IDMS regions. God only
knows what they're doing but these jobs seem to have their dispatching
priority increased to FC range where their srvclass should have them in
the high C0 to low E0 range. The only enque that appears is 'IDMSCV BATxx'
(where xx is some hex characters). I was thinking that it could be ERV
trying to elimate enque contention but that doesn't seem to be the case.
This enque seems to be an IDMS mechanism to serialize batch usage.
Any thoughts?

DCOLLECT and HSM backup indication

2008-03-18 Thread Jack Kelly
I tried to send this issue to IBM but they think that it's a question
rather than a problem, so I'll try here.
Trying to use DCOLLECT to ensure that all ML2 data has a backup. In
general the UMLBKDT field (DCOLLECT ML2 backup date)indicates if a backup
has been done (as long as it's not empty, been opened, is SMS, etc). I do
have a couple of dsn that have zero UMLBKDT but a valid backup exists
(from HLIST and the B record in DCOLLECT).
Has anyone else seen this or know what I have missed or does IBM just need
the money (we don't have QA support)?

The WhoHas generally checks the SYSDSN enque and if the file is enqueued

Unfortunately, he did not try to allocate the DSN with JCL and a

Message ACC20210 - who issues

2008-03-05 Thread Jack Kelly
Is anyone familiar with messages
ACC20210-A ADDVOL FOR DD=SYS4
DSN=T.RA.VIB.DXX.SXX.Y.D08065.T47259 VOL=SUSR01 POOL=ACTIONT
EXT=16
ACC20600-A VOLUME * WAS ADDED TO DATA SET

I know that it is a product that is here but I don't know which one.
Goggle showed the message at a couple of sites but it was ancillary to
sort problems.

Reason that I'm looking is that it appears to have extended a PS dataset,
with no DCLASS options, to 3 volumes after exhausting 15 extents on the
previous volumes.

This is probably DTS Software's SCC product. Storage Control Center. It
is an improved STOPX37 product.

It has rules that will monitor allocation and if needed add volumes to
prevent space abends.

Randy, the error message suggests you have that volume (UPPZFS)
incorrectly defined in the ServerPac dialogs. Under Option M - Modify
System Layout, primary command SUMP or Option V (Summary of Physical

Good luck.

ZOS Upgrade Issue

Good Day,

I am attempting to upgrade from Z/OS V1.4 to Z/OS V1.7 and am having a
bit of a problem

getting the ALLOCDS job to run correctly. I am wondering if any of you
have experienced this?

I tried searching the archives but did not find anything helpful.

My error occurrs in the ALCZFS step which allocates the ZFS file system
using the TSO ALLOC parm.

The result is as follows:

READY

ALLOC DSNAME('ZOS17.OMVS.VAR') RECORG(LS)
TRACKS SPACE(528,53) BLKSIZE(4096) VOLUME(UPPZ

FS) CATALOG

IKJ56221I DATA SET ZOS17.OMVS.VAR NOT ALLOCATED, VOLUME NOT AVAILABLE+

IKJ56221I VOLUME UPPZFS CURRENTLY MOUNTED ON AN INELIGIBLE DEVICE

READY

END

It seems to be device related as it will allocate to a syssq volume. I
have another lpar on which It

will allocate to any volume. I have the specific volumes added to my
vatlst just like my syssq volumes, UPPZFS,0,0,3390,Y .

The device is a 3390 - mod 9. I have tried allocating to a mod 3 device
with the same results.

Any help is appreciated.

TIA

Re: 3494 ATL Manual Functions

2008-02-20 Thread Jack Kelly
From memory, which is a dangerous thing these days, I'm fairly certain
that you can eject tapes from the d/t 3494 via the 'action' panel but I
can't remember weather you have to be in manual mode or not. In your case
that doesn't appear to be a concern though. Ejecting virtual tapes is a
little different (I think this is done in the 'commands' popup) but
do'able.

3494 ATL Manual Functions

We have a 3494 ATL in our BR site we use for an offsite tape repository.
The plan is for that unit to run stand alone until we bring up a
production LPAR and begin a recovery. Tapes would be rotated in and out
of the unit using printed reports from the base system.

The operators want to use the ATL console to eject tapes, but can't find
the function. I seem to recall someone saying that the eject function is
something that can only be done via a running RMM. That is, manual tape
management is not fully supported. Am I understanding things correctly?

Re: mvs output on pc printer

I have a need on occasion to download stuff (listings or source) and print
on a locally attached PC printer. Does anyone know of software (free or
otherwise) that can do such a thing?

If it's infrequently, I use the cheap method, ie download/ftp the file to
my PC as a *.txt file and then print the txt file from Windows. Problem is
font size and #lines/page but that's not rocket science.

Different CA support site

2008-01-30 Thread Jack Kelly
As someone stated earlier, CA support has a new URL. This related to an
inability to access the original one. I asked CA Lev1 about it and the
original (SupportConnect) is being replace. I kind of liked the digital
certificates but too bad...

CA info:
CA's new support site, CA Support Online, starts on July 7. The new site,
which replaces SupportConnect, will not support the use of digital
certificates, so we are now suspending digital certificate registrations
and renewals.
You will need to use a user ID and password to access SupportConnect and
the new CA Support Online. Your user ID is your email address.

Re: Console

2008-01-09 Thread Jack Kelly

Anyone have recommendations on console consolidation...
I have ICC project started...but looking at something that I can use (1)
keyboard with many monitors..

ICC works well. I can have as many TSO or operator consoles as I can have
3270 sessions on my PC. Of course that depends on the ICC setup and
security.

Re: help with IEBCOPY: selective load module copies

2008-01-09 Thread Jack Kelly
See I should never disagree. I copied the library and that was a stupid
test. When I selected a member, it only copied the member and not the
alias.
So again I've successfully proven that everyone else is right..

A simple SAS routine will do the trick too. But i would also include

the VSAM SMF6x aren't too useful.

Re: SMS Construct last referenced

2007-12-11 Thread Jack Kelly
Not to overlook the obvious, it would seem that a simple SAS or ICEMAN
report from DCOLLECT data would provide a 'last date', ie oldest, for DC,
MC, SG and SC for all non migrated datasets. Migrated dataset will have
all classes except SG.
Since this is not something that would be performed too often, this type
of reporting may prove to be adequate.

Just a thought

I would assume that a lot of us are in the same boat, ie like Unix was,

It is a complex issue and the embryonic stages are confusing and error

msgIGD17279I SMS reject becasue of 'exclude list'

2007-09-11 Thread Jack Kelly
I'm use to seeing IGD17279I for diabale volumes, storage groups,DADSM
failure, etc but have one for being on the 'exclude list'.

IGD17279I 3 VOLUMES WERE REJECTED BECAUSE THEY WERE ON THE EXCLUDE LIST

Msg Codes says
THEY WERE ON THE EXCLUDE LIST The volumes were already in use by this data
set.

The Storage Group has 16 volumes, 8 volumes were rejected because of space,
5 were rejected because of duplicate DSN (which is yet another question),
and 3 volumes were rejected because they were on the exclude list. The DSN
is currently allocated on parts of 3 volumes with 6 candidate entries.

Fw: Re: Send a IODF file in a email

2007-09-04 Thread Jack Kelly
I stand corrected. I mis-typed, it is indeed 2.9 HMC. Ans I know that HMC
supports IOCDS but I FTP'd the IOCP, ie source, from one mainframe to a
new one. And then used that sourece for the stand aloneIOCP/HCD generation.
Of course there is editing to do because the standalone IOCP/HCD is less
robust than the z/OS.

If you're going to FTP the IODF file, you can FTP from one HMC to another
HMC, at least at level 1.9.
