Nope, you can connect to any wireless access point that is open, and if secured, only if you have the key. the biggest thing about wireless connection is the software. Most of it is crap and can't keep a signal. make sure wireless0 is turned on and set to auto in its setting. You can find it by

Thanks Victor, The vol is the only thing in the sys tray so that shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for these steps I am going to try them next. As far as the speakers/plugs and all that is concerned, it is all plugged in correctly. But I did go ahead and unplug it all and replugged it all back.

my next suggestion is to see if you can obtain some usb headphones and plug them in and see if sound will come through them after you plug them in. I have such a set for emergencies because they become the default sound output device and i am able to run jaws or the narrator if the sound
