What's curious in Kimber's case is that after she's removed j from the JAWS 16 shortcut and confirmed that it's gone, control-alt -j still brings up JAWS 16. I can't figure out why that would be. On creation of the shortcut, which it sounds like Kimber knows what to do, I'd add a little more.

Rick and LeDon, I also have a 64-bit Win7 machine. On my system, JAWS reports the details the way you and I would like when it comes to subfolders. For example, in Windows Explorer, JAWS will report the number of subfolders within a folder and the position of each subfolder within that list.

Gerald, In your step 4, isn't "protected mode" a way of protecting against viruses, etc.? If so, we should at least warn people why that mode is there. For myself, I haven't unchecked it, and I've had no difficulty opening PDF files once the other accessibility settings are in place.
