Brian, thank you, I've never seen this before. Hello, JAWS has a method for naming columns and/or rows but using the Excel Naming Manager is what is now recommended. Here are the steps: 1. You first need to move the keyboard focus to the row containing the column headers. Use CTRL with G to launch the Go To dialog box. Type in the cell address, for example A13 if the column titles are on row 13 and start with column A. Press enter key to move to that position in the worksheet. 2. Use CTRL+3. You can alternatively use Alt+M followed by the letter "N." If using a mouse click on the Formula tab on the top part of the ribbon and then click on "Name Manager." 3. Click on the New button or press spacebar on the New button. If using the keyboard you might need to tab to the New button before pressing spacebar. 4. Type the following changing the cell addresses as required: ColumnTitle.a13..h13 There should be no spaces in what you type in this box. Capitalize the word column and the word title but do not leave spaces. The first period is for the beginning of the range of cells containing the column headings. The two periods together show the last cell in the range. If your column titles were on row 5 and went from column B to column F then you would type: ColumnTitle.b5..F5 5. Either click the OK button or use tab key until you find OK and press spacebar. 6. Either click the Close button or tab until you find the Close button and press spacebar. Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] excel reading headers.
You can also use insert control alt r, or insert control alt c to set column and row headers. I haven't followed this thread, but that is what I do, unless I'm referring to something different. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Brian Lee Sent: Tuesday, August 15, 2017 10:28 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] excel reading headers. Hello again, I should have mentioned that if you want to hear row titles then you use RowTitle instead of ColumnTitle. If you want both row and column titles you would use Title instead of ColumnTitle or RowTitle. There should be no spaces in the name, the beginning of the range is preceded by one period and the end of the range is preceded by two periods. For example, RowTitle.a5..a20 Will let you hear row titles in that range of cells. Using just the Word Title will let you hear both row and column titles in the range you specify. Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] excel reading headers.
The simplest way to mark row and column headers for JAWS reading is not, however, always a permanent one. The process I use is so simple and quick that it's OK if I occasionally need to restate them. Press the JAWS key (insert) but first make sure it's a sticky key so that it will stay actuated while you press other keys. Then hold down the alt and control keys while pressing r, then c. R marks the row headers and C marks column headers. Before you press the short cut keys though you need to move the virtual cursor (speaking JAWS) to the intersection of rows and columns that you want to speak. Note you may mark either R, C or both as you need. JAWS will speak the header as you cross it.
