KR> LSA Certified ?

2008-10-12 Thread raybeth...@sbcglobal.net
   Kr Netters,
I hesitate to bring this up again, but
I should be ready to have my Kr2s inspected in 2 or 3 months. I don't
know
if it is possible to get the plane listed as LSA. How do you know if the stall
speed
will be low enough before you fly it? I do have an 1835 VW engine. I do have
Diehl
wing skins. My empty weight should be close to 650 lbs. I am 83, have never
flown
in a KR2S. I passed my FAA medical 2 years ago and am still in good health. The
main advantage to having my Kr2S as an LSA would be not having to bother with
the medical. It also might be an advantage when selling. Has any KR ever been
certified LSA?

Dan, It was very good to hear that you will be in the air, soon. You
certainly have had mor than
your share of delays. Persistance is next to patience, I guess.
I have had my own delay (and dissappointment). The day before I planned
to start it up for the first time
in 12 years I was putting oil in the cylinders and turning the engine
over, and it stopped turning.
I could turn it ccw but cw only up to a point and it would stop. I have the
1835 out and on my table. Gotta find out
what the culprit is.
I have had one of my rare colds this week and my time with the engine
has been limited. Perhaps tomorrow I can
get it opened up. Sounds as though you will be in the air soon.

I was the pilot of the the kr that went down 395jt. Not sure what happen to
the fuel
but had more then 2 hrs of it in the plane before I went down. I have
been on the net
for many years had have had 4 different kr's and have seen and head of a
lot of crashes and people that have died but never did I think that it
would happen to me. I always fly high as a rule of thumb and that paid off
as I all most did not make the island. If I had not turned when I did I
would have been crab bait or would have been killed by the trees. I will
share more as I find out what happened to the fuel I will also share some
pics. I can tell you now that I have looked death in the eyes and it did not
look good and thankful that my good lord was looking over me that day. Had I
been 25 ft lower i would have not been here today to talk about it. I hope
that some day the findings of the crash will help save some ones life just
as mine was saved. Will keep all posted sorry that it took me so long but to
be honest I really did not want to talk to anyone for the last few days. I
think that the plane might have a chance but will take some work I can't
believe that the wings did
not get hurt. I am not sure if I will fix it or just sell it. I have a lot
to think about with a family of 7. Will keep all posted and will find a way
to put a link to my yahoo pics. For now.
  William Walsh

I got this from a friend on the Quickie e-mail list. Anyone know
anything about who the pilot might be?

Larry Flesner
+++

Yesterday, a KR-2 pilot landed in jail here in the Puget Sound.

William left Olympia for Tacoma on a flight over Puget Sound via McNeil
Island - a state prison. He had 7 gallons on board verified by sight gage,
electric fuel gage, and visual sighting thru a gas cap. After 15 minutes of
flight time, he ran out of fuel and had to make an emergency landing in a
cleared field on the island.

The engine is a Revmaster with Revflow carburetor. There is only a header
tank with 14 gallons capacity. There is a fuel tank vent under the airplane
similar to the Q2.

He cleared the trees on the high point and landed on an upslope. When the
nose gear touched, it broke off and the airplane pitch poled onto it's back
landing on the canopy and the tail. The canopy frame held and the vertical
fin broke. William was not injured but complained of soreness and
stiffness. He had a 4 point harness. The canopy plastic broke and William
crawled out. There was no fire. There was no fuel on board and there was
no evidence of fuel leakage.

I helped William recover his airplane with some friends and relatives. The
guards had helped William right and disassemble his airplane when we got
there.

The NTSB did not come out but will examine the airplane at Williams place.

Access was by the prison barge which is pushed by a tug and manned by prison
inmates. We were prohibited from talking to the inmates. We used a 16 foot
trailer. We were escorted by a guard during the recovery. There is no news
in the papers about the accident as the entire event occurred on state
property.

KR> Update

2008-10-12 Thread raybeth...@sbcglobal.net
 Mark,
I am still working on my KR2S and hoping to run the engine by March. I
have been on this thing
since 1994. I hope my giid health keeps up for several more years so I can
do some flying for a change.
I wish I could share some of our good weather with you. We do have cold
spells but then it moderates.
I hope you and yours have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Am I the only one in the KR world working today? My phone has not even rang
here at work. Might just have to shut er down early today. Anyway, my plane
is in my garage being torn down. I have removed the wings, the rudder, the
cowling, the forward deck, the seats and have the engine completely
disconnected and ready for removal from the mount. I am doing this so that I
can do the final body work on the KR and get her painted. There are some
minor repairs that are needed and a few modifications I am going to do. I
also have to make a new alternator mount and work on my carb heat and cabin
heat. This gives me something to tinker with over the winter here in
Wisconsin, however, we are having a heat wave right now. It is actually 37°F
as I am typing this. This is the first time we have been above freezing in
three weeks. Hope you all have a very Merry Christmas.

Went to the airport today after work. Fueled the plane, preflighted her and
got airborne at 5pm. The flight was just a basic local lazy type of flight
with long slow turns and never getting above 3500' and I stayed within about
10 miles of the airport. I was just truly enjoying the view of the beautiful
trees below which happen to be in their full fall colors right now. What a
sight to behold!!!. At about 40 minutes into the flight, I noticed the
engine began running a little rough so I changed rpm settings and that did
not seem to help. I noticed the rpm begin to slowly drop. H, could this
be carb ice? I applied carb heat and about thirty seconds later she started
running smooth again. The temp outside was 43° with a dew point of 39° and
relative humidity of 87%. Now that adds up to carb ice potential. I fly with
an Ellison EFS-3A. The rest of the flight was uneventful and was after the
sun set. I greased in a night landing for my log books.

  Mark,
A beautiful experienceand so aptly expressed. I am often amazed at the
beautiful
sights and sounds we are priviledged to see and share here on God's
beautiful earth. This
afternoon, my wife, Beth, and I watched, on the Travel Channel, Bryce Canyon
and Zion
National Parks. One of my Grandsons and I visited these two places in 1991
after I
retired. " When I consider the earth, the moon, the stars, the handiwork of
Your hands,
who is man that you are mindful of him?" Not a direct quote, but hopefully
close.
I am hoping to see more of it from a few thousand feet above from my

I made my own formers and used 1/16th Hoop Pine plywood for my turtledeck.
So far, it is okay. If you are interested, I can tell you where to get it,
in Houston.
The weight may be less than a pre-mold.
   Good luck.

Hi Dan,
Congratulations I hope to hear a similar sound in a few weeks.
I have my mount in place and have had the engine on, but took it off to
add the things on the firewall. I getting an order ready to send off Monday
morning. These pipe threads and 37 degree fittings and such are fairly new
to me. I have a couple of teachers and I am learning. I hope to have my tail
wheel on next week and then I can move it outside for sanding and a breeze,
hopefully. Your pictures of the start-up are good.. Best of luck.

   Kr-Netters,
When I make it to the Gathering in my KR2S, I may not only give Larry
Flesner
some real competition in the "ugliest" department, but also in the weight
department.
Her is what I am talking about (weight wise). Yesterday, I weighted my
KR2S
using bathroom scales, just to get an idea of my weight. The two mains weighed
350#
and the Tail, 30#. Yes, I,m puzzled too. This included engine and most engine
access-
ories. I estimate that I need to add 50# to the engine weight for battery,
cowling, prop,
firewall attachments, and 10# for instruments, wiring etc., and 10# in the
cockpit, and 10#
for paint, etc. Okay, that,s 80# and 380# = 460#. That's still light. Am I
doing something
wrong? I believe the bathroom scales to be accurate to 5#. Any comments?

I happened to re-read an E-mail you sent earlier about cooling

air exits through the rear of the cooler. The "ram" air comes from the
inside
of the cowling. I will check the aircraft logbook for comments. The A

KR> Carb on top

- Original Message -

To: "KRnet"
Sent: Saturday, April 23, 2005 1:25 PM
Subject: KR> Carb on top

Any builder looking to run with carb on top needs to run one that is similar
to an auto carb in that it has a good needle and seat style control for
regulating fuel into the bowl. The problem that I have seen with alot of
carbs being adapted to the KR engines is that they are purpose built, just
not for our purpose. A carb used on our engines needs to be one designed
for a moving vehicle, not adapted from an industrial application, or a farm
tractor, or something else. A good candidate is the Weber series of carbs.
Another are the Mikuni carbs from 4 cylinder engines (not from seadoos, not
large enough) like the Honda Protégé or Accord. These carbs are designed to
run daily with engine heat, so on top is okay, and they run with fuel pumps,
so that is okay. Use the book AUTO MATH BOOK by John Lawlor to calculate the
necessary cfm requirements for your application and then match the carb to
it, always choosing to the low side of the cfm requirement. Example: if your
engine calculates to needing say 368 cfm at your peak rpm, then choose an
available 350 cfm carb, or 325 cfm whichever is readily available. This is
one time where bigger is NOT better. Larger will cause hesitations, surging,
and mixture problems through all ranges except peak rpm (which is what the
carb would be selected to work at only in this case). Testing has shown that
an oversized carb will actually cause the engine to slow down, or make less
power not make more. Also make sure that it is a factory style carb and not
after market like a Holley, which will require jetting and adjusting for all
ranges and changes in season. Acquire a Carter brand electric pump which
uses a better pumping mechanism to prevent flooding and has more volume flow
without the pressure (see the Weber Carb site). The Posa requires too many
modifications to make it acceptable. I think Jim Faughn is still running one
on his 2180 VW. He goes into alot of detail on his site about it, as does
Orma. Good reading.

And here is a little tip alot of builders are missing: if you use a carb of
late model design, say after 1975, it will not only be designed for best
lean mix which will yield best performance, but will NOT require mixture
control as it will be equipped with a barometrically controlled diaphragm
that will automatically lean the mixture as you climb or atmospheric
conditions change, the same way that the new FADEC engines alter the mix
with electronic control by leaning the mixture. You will need to set the
idle mixture and then the rest is preset mechanically based on factory
adjustments internally. This is why the carb MUST be matched properly to the
engine. They also have an accelerator pump eliminating the need for a
primer system, AND making acceleration smoother due to fuel being added as
the throttle is opened at the same time, something that even some of the
aviation carbs do not have which cause the typical popping back and
hesitation when the throttle is opened rapidly from idle. I have heard
counter thoughts on this but we cannot replace the decades of development
that have gone into the successful carbs of later cars. Use as is including
the choke. The electric choke will do 2 things: make cold starts a
non-issue, and will allow for an automatic richening of the mix if the
incoming air is too cold. Power is applied to the choke to keep it hot, so
the carb temp has to get really low for it to come on, but if it does, the
mix will richen to compensate for low temp of the incoming air for proper
fuel atomization. These enhancements took many years to develop and cured
the mysterious surging, flat spots, "vapor locking" and other drivability
problems associated with the pre-emission carbs.

Just a quick note: long skinny runners for intake are more rpm sensitive and
provide a better idle "signal" for smoother acceleration; short fat runners
are better for overall rpm performance and make more power, but do not
provide a good "signal" to the carb at low to intermediate rpm.

More on this later

Today, I flew exactly one hour on my KR. Again the flight was more than
perfect. Outside temp was 44° and no winds with a ceiling of 12,000'. Again,
I had full tanks (10 gallons in each wing). After completion of the flight,
I measured the fuel burn at 5.5 gallons per hour. My maximum altitude during
this flight was 5,000' with a lot of cruising at 4,000'. I did a lot of
steep turns both left and right and she would hold altitude with no efforts.
Again, I flew hands off in straight and level flight with no variations from
where I let go of the stick. I was hands off for almost 10 seconds!!!. On
initial climb at take off I held the airspeed at 100 mph, rpm was 2500, oil
temp was 190°, oil psi was 40, exhaust temp was 1200° and CHT was 280°. I
did three high speed passes down the runway at approximately 100'. During
the dive to the airport, I obtained a speed of 175 mph, level over the
runway 160 mph and when I pulled out she climbed like a homesick angel. At
4,000' and cruise at WOT, I achieved 150 mph at 2750 rpm, oil temp 190°, oil
psi 40, exhaust temp 1100, and cht temp 260°. I am very pleased at how this
KR handles with no surprises so far and also with the engine running as
smooth as I could expect being it was the first engine I have ever
completely built. The only thing is that I firmly believe I have too much
prop and that I should be able to get better top end performance with maybe
a 52 x 50. I have one that I will be testing soon but for now, I just want
to enjoy flying for a while. I took off this Monday and will be putting
several hours on the plane. More reports coming soon

tomorrow I start the installation of the engine mount and engine. My

something like this. 1. Run engine in April
   2. Taxi in May
3. High speed taxi and first flight in June
4. Obtain airworthiness certificate and
start flying 40 hours in July
 5. Continue flying off time and working

Get ready for Mt. Vernon in September

As you can see a rather ambitious schedule--maybe an unreasonable one. I'm
aiming

This E-mail is directed to Steve Jones
Steve, until I have your E-mail address, I am going this route. I have
read ,
wit considerable interest, the article by Jack Cox, about your KR2 building
experience. You are to be congratulated. Please consider it done. You have
built
a beautiful flying machine. I can only hope mine turns out so well.
The article mentions that you did all this for $12,000. Did that include
that
nice instrument panel? I started my KR2S about 10 yers ago and did some
scrounging
myself buying at least three groups of parts from builders who decided not to
continue
building or flying. I estimate I can have mine flying (with primer only) for
$18,000. That
does include the panel.
I hope to see you at the Gathering.
May you have many HAPPY LANDINGS.

KR> canopy height, panel height, cockpit width

2008-10-12 Thread raybeth...@sbcglobal.net

Mark,
I say "ditto" to what you have said about height and width. I have
yet to ride in a KR. I am 6'21/2" tall.
I weigh 200. I have had 2 opportunities to ride in a KR2 and a KR2S. Both
times my head touched the canopy top.
I made my cabin 4" wider at the outside. I gave up the convenience and looks
of a formed plexiglass canopy, and made
my own formers, and now I wish I had made them an inch higher. I do have
clearance, but just barely. Now I have a
31/2" wide console down the center of my cockpit. There I have my rudder
cables and turnbuckles for adjustment. I also
have an armrest.
As you have mentioned, one change made makes necessary others
(plural). I don't know how necessary it was,
but I added 6" to the length of my center spar, to offset the extra width of
the cockpit.
Happy Building. And, let's don't give up.
