KR> Engine start without prop

2008-10-12 Thread Phil Matheson
Thanks for all your concerns.
My geared RG 2000 engine has a flywheel and gear reduction.

I do not remember saying anything about over revving or flogging my engine,
I did say I started it up.
Vw Engines also ran it last week without a prop, just check they fixed all
the oil leaks.

I am using a 3 inch extension for my 0200. I don't know how you would put a
cowling on it otherwise.

KR> engine start

2008-10-12 Thread D F Lively
Myron:

Isit possible that there may be alot of ways to deal with this issue? So many
infact that alot depends on a whole host of considerations to the point that
what one person does makes for differnces such as sepation from the firewall
andthe kind of cowl mods and many other things.

I raise the question so that I may not back myself into a corner that can be
easily avoided.

KR> engine start

2008-10-12 Thread Myron (Dan) Freeman
The only reason I'm using one is that it gives you more room up front around
the engine and you can make the cowling more streamlined, nothing more than
that. Three inches isn't that much.

ye-ha. Well not quite but at least woopee.

I started my 0200 last night that I removed from my citabria 4 years ago. I
had spent the last week or more getting every thing hooked up properly,. I had
spent a week modifying the exhaust to make it fit inside a streamlined cowling.
Then several days on the control cables to the mixture and throttle and
carburator heat and oil lines ect. When I pulled the starter cable it fire up
like it handn't been filled with 23 quarts of oil. Not even a puff of smoke.
It idled perfectly and strained at the rope I had the tail tied down with. No
big deal but it made me feel good to hear it run again.

I put an 0-200 on my KR-2 and did not use an

better of. Especially if you do aerobatics, witch it

KR> Engine Start-up

I have an 1835 VW engine that I will be starting soon. My question: Is it
okay
to start the engine and run it a minute or two or two, without damage? ( It
would be
convenient not to have the prop in the way)

I ran my Vdub 1835 at idle and slightly above for about 2 minutes total without
dire consequences. I was using Mystery Oil to get lube to distant parts of the
engine because it had not been started in years. Your mileage may vary.

KR> Engine Start-up

2008-10-12 Thread Phil Matheson
I have an 1835 VW engine that I will be starting soon. My question: Is
it okay
to start the engine and run it a minute or two or two, without damage? ( It
would be
convenient not to have the prop in the way)

Running an engine for a short time can cause other problems, depending how
long before it will be started again.
By only running for a short time, you get condensation in the engine,
because it does not get hot enough to get rid of the moisture.
So if the engine is to be stored, and not used ,rust MAY form on the bore
etc.
I have my new RG2000 in and out of my Kr and have not started it for that
reason. So I remove the plugs, insert some oil and crank over to get oil
through the crank bearings, then refit the plugs and spin over again to get
the oil over the valves and cylinder calls under compression. I do get some
oil drip out of the exhaust.
This works well.
Others may not agree.
