Hello All! Is there a way to add a bead at a windmill crossing? I am working
the Bedfordshire leaves in pattern #2 of Jean Leaders Lace Guild intro. There
are four pairs total. The leaves are connected as “squares on point” & the
effect is like a line of small forget me nots. The piece would be
Hello All! Not a bead expert, but do have a bit of experience! Beads have
gotten very expensive as manufacturers have dreamed up new colors finishes.
As an example, AB finish is just that--thin layers of a coating that reflect a
rainbow of colors over the the base color. My favorite bead
Hello
I use quite a lot of seed beads in my lace. I do find the Guatemann seed beads
do lose their colour when washed. I made two lots of edgings for skirts. The
lace and beads looked lovely when done. Then I washed them and the beads went
clear. Has anyone else found this??

I do know that tatters have had this as a problem. Quite what the solution is
though I don't know... short of Don't Wash it!!

Yes. my hand is up too. I still always do this when I'm camping out
bush, and just like Dad did - I make the long fork myself -

Well, yes, My hand is held high!! The toast (or crumpets) were Always

Oh yes I am still looking
Firstly a thank you for all the offers and pictures I have received.
I have decided that I will not put an entry for each bead in the dictionary
but refer readers to a Beads article in the appendix. I pretty well have
that article written to my great relief.
Once again thank you to you all.
I had better say stop to your kind donations of pictures for this article.
I must say that I did it because I like the eye candy of spangles and beads,
but we have to draw the line somewhere.
You are too kind.
Many thanks.
No promises, but you might be able to see it in the bobbin museum.
Sometime I saw instructions to add pailettes (flat metal-like circles) with
a cloth stitch sitting in the hole and the pailette lying flat. Drawing from
memory, it goes as follows with two pairs: pull the 2nd thread through the
hole, put the 3rd bobbin through the loop and tension, that makes a
One of the workshops at Lace Guild Convention this year was about
different ways of adding beads to BL. Malvary, Jacqui and I were in
that group.

I add the beads on in the reverse order of working last bead that I
need on first , first bead I need on last as I thread the bobbins. I
then simply slide the bead into place when I get to where it needs to
be. I usually put the beads on a gimp thread vs on a worker or a
passive pair but it
In my experience half stitch doesn't have workers. I prefer to use a fine
crochet hook, pass the bead on to it, pull through one bobbin thread (
worker or passive, which ever is appropriate for the design) and transfer
the bead to the thread loop, then pass the second bobbin through the loop.
Half stitch has only a single worker, so you could put all the beads on that
thread. You may need to put on an extra twist at the pinhole to achieve
this - depends on how your footside works.
When working in half stitch, I have found it to be difficult to attach beads
using the crochet hook

Do you add the beads to the thread as you are winding or do
you add as you need, if so how would you do that in half stitch?
There are several ways to put beads into bobbin lace.
A number of Christine Springett patterns have beads scattered

Dear Spiders
If anyone has booked onto the Beads and Bobbin workshop with Jan
Tregidgo on the Friday afternoon please note that there is a typo on
the course info sheet.
I have checked with Jan and she's confirmed that the middle size
pattern requires Moravia linen *50/4* or equivalent

Of course not. If you want beads in your lace put them there.
And how do you do

I've used amethyst nuggets in a lace I made. I wanted the beads to lie in
the position where double thread picots would be on the outside edge of a
tape. So I calculated which pairs might take turns as weavers, since those
are the ones that would make picots. And I just strung beads

And how do you do it, for either wire or linen? I tried putting them on
a pair in the same way that's used for sewings, but then
