Re: [lace] Honiton pillow
Re: Honiton demonstratin pillow It must be difficult for someone who knows nothing of the subject to get everything exactly correct. Actually I think she did a good job. We use demo pillows here, too. The reporter seemed to think Honiton lace is made on demonstration pillows. take care, Robin = Hi Robin Many lacemakers here in UK use 'demonstration pillows'. These are ones that we have set up often with a suitably simple pattern using fairly thick thread and cheap bobbins that we use just for demonstrating at lace fairs etc. I think the reporter may have misinterpreted what she heard. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Honiton article
I still have my original honiton pillow which is made with barley straw. But I cheated and bought my from Dennis Hornsby. It is quite large and heavy.I had seen him at a Lace Day in Essex in the early 80s. I had run out of money by the time I saw it and he had only one left.I said I was spent up and would he send it to me if I sent him a cheque the following week and he very kindly agreed that I could take it with me, the postage would have been a lot, then send him a cheque. He said that as I was a lacemaker he could trust me, plus I had a teeshirt on that had the name of the company my husband worked for at the time!!! I did go on to make a couple of honiton straw pillows myself but they are a lot softer than they should be really. Must admit I don't remember a 'honiton pillow' being called a 'demonstration pillow before'.A gap in my lace education perhaps??!! Re: [lace] Re: Honiton-pillow
Yes I have had that strange look in the UK too.In fact as one point, the pet shops in my area of Yorkshire refused to sell us barley straw if it was for a lace pillow. Don't know why, maybe they couldn't keep up with demand, especially as I was teaching 5 or 6 classes a week!! We had to resort to a friendly farmer of a friend of mine who let us have as much as we wanted. Think we had to give a donation to a charity. [lace] Travel pillow
I have a couple of travel pillows with rollers but I also made a block part that can sit in the well so I can do small motifs rather than just yardage. Janice Liz wrote: As it is a roller pillow, I can only do straight lace, - but it is invaluable for taking out and about, and takes us very little room - even in a caravan. [lace] Needle Bobbin Club bulletins
The discussion of the letters found by Jeri Ames reminds me that a collection of Needle and Bobbin club bulletins can be found at the On-Line Digital Archive here: http://www.cs.arizona.edu/patterns/weaving/nbc.html I think this is a complete collection, from Vol. 1 No. 1 in 1916, to Vol. 72, Nos. 1 2 in 1989. Re: [lace] Travel Pillow (how to work one)
- Sue T hurwitz...@talktalk.net wrote: Now I might have to practise with the roller and see if I can make it work, I know lots of you use them. Do you work the bit at the top of the roller or slightly forward of that mark? Yes, you work mostly at the top or close to it. You want the lace to stay against the pricking, but the bobbins' weight will pull it away from the pricking if you go too far down the front of the roller. And it's too hard to see what you're doing if you try to work on the back side of the roller. For this reason, the bigger the diameter of the roller, the better. I've worked on skinny rollers and you very quickly reach the point of having to roll it up. On a narrow piece (less than 15 pairs), you will be working just a few minutes before having to pause to roll the work. On the other hand, a wide piece is also problematic. A piece I'm working on now is 50 pairs wide, torchon, and I can't finish many of the elements (diagonal bars, diamonds, larger fans) without advancing the roller. Then I have to roll it forward again to work the next element to the right or left. The roller width (the height of the cylinder) and the pillow itself are big enough for the pattern, but the diameter isn't. This is something to keep in mind when shopping for a roller. Robin P.
