I love the feeling of pinning on wool layers. Much better than using
Styrofoam or other synthetic material. It's true that these pillows made of
wool blankets are heavy and not appropriate for travelling. But I don't
travel with them anyway, so for me they are the best choice!
Interesting this
Thank you for posting about this! I enjoyed a brief peek must revisit the
site soon.If memory serves, I attended a presentation on War Laces within
the past year or so. Was it at Ithaca or IOLI? They are so lovely I think I
could recognize the form if I find War Lace in an antique
Dear Susan,
The 2014 IOLI annual convention was in Sacramento, California. There is a
collection of War Laces at Stanford University (alma mater of both Herbert
Hoover and Lou Hoover - she was the first woman in America to receive a
Geology degree from Stanford). Perhaps there was an
Thank you ALL for the great advice! I'm on digest so didn't receive answers
from Anita, Alice, Clay, Adele, Cynce Antje until today. Now that I've
digested all the info, I'll be ready to roll when I get to Pennsylvania!
Anita, I'm arriving early on Sunday so will look for you at the venue.
Thank you Gon, Adele Jocelyn for explaining the Pronkrol. Is there a
tutorial on how to make one? Or a photo that could be posted to Flickr? Our
little IOLI charter chapter can't afford a teacher so we are planning a Lace

It is a Torchon insertion designed by Bep Hoogerbrugge. She used a filling in
this piece which is not frequently used in the Torchon, the five hole ground.

Dear Susan,
A roll of sampler embroidery stitches in the embroidery community is not
that unusual. Here, I'll suggest you look at sampler books and articles -
or ask someone in the Embroiderers' Guild for suggestions close to wherever
you live. In fact, it seemed to me the Pronkrol was
You are quite right again Lin! A friend always shipped her stuff Fedex before
attending EGA seminar. The venue arranged pick up service for the return.
Hmmm. Will see where I am on liftin' totin' before I try that idea. Thanks
for reminding me on an additional option! Sincerely, Susan
Jeepers! Lyn Bailey sent several links these are way more elaborate than I
would have imagined. Very cool idea to use a table runner Jocelyn! After
seeing them, I also realized Japanese sashiko cloth might work--14 wide with a
selvedge indigo color. So ladies--I'm loaded for bear. Must
Thanks for jogging my memory Karen! I knew I had seen a fabulous presentation
but couldn't recall details. Your pictures of the lace on the big screen
really defined the beauty intricacy of the motifs. They are a wonderful
legacy of trying times. Sincerely, Susan Hottle in PBG, FL

I found a table runner today, 13 x 70 inches, navy colour with a dark leafy
fabric and plain dark edges around the whole thing, mitred at the corners.
I could even tuck in the ends of the lace if I made small openings in the
dark edge?! That might save some work. The most time consuming would be
I've just updated The Lace Guild website with two new lists of second-hand
books. These are books that have been donated to the The Lace Guild but because
the library already has copies, are being sold to raise funds to buy new
books. This time there is a Bargain Basement list with all the
Since I subscribe to the digest, My reactions are not always immediate.
In Sacramento last year at IOLI I gave a power-point lecture on the War
Laces at the Smithsonian.
The lecture was after the Tuesday lunch and does not show up in the program
for the Convention. I don't know why they did not
It has been gratifying receiving your responses to the War Laces website,
both privately and on Arachne.

It makes us want to continue our volunteer work with the lace collection.
Regretfully it took a couple days for all
Hi Susan:
Many years ago I made a cloth banner. With help from a quilter friend, I made a
backing that was bigger than the banner by a couple of inches on all sides.
That extra fabric from the backing was folded in half and then folded over the
edge onto the front side and stitched down by
Hi Susan,
Here's a follow up. I linked my previous photo to our Northern Lights
Lacemakers blog and added two close up photos this morning.
I love the idea of making a pronkrol and these sample board photos from a
previous Lace Day are only to show the lace. Of course, the lengths would

The good news is--it only took two times for my iPad auto-correct spelling
feature to decide that Pronkrol didn't need fixing! LOL. Thank you for
posting pictures Jocelyn. You must have a larger group. Our chapter has an
upholstered lace-fabric board that is framed. We are going to attach
