could be at my end. You can reply directly to me.

[lace] What media constitues Lace

2015-09-04 Thread cec
I just received a phone call from a lady that organizes the categories
in her state fair. She specifically asked me if Crocheted Hair Pin Lace
should be in the Lace or Crochet Category. I'm at a loss since I would
consider it crocheted, but there are other "lacy" crochet designs that I
have seen. Plus all the Knitted Lace. I am searching for an opinion
here.

Re: [lace] Lacemakers' Hands

2016-05-04 Thread cec
Noelene,
What a lovely poem. Thanks for sharing.
Cindy in Virginia where it is wet and still a little chilly for Spring.

Yvette Slabbert in New Zealand has a wonderful blog size with some
really
good articles about lacemaking: https://letslace.com/.

Her latest project is to document pictures of lacemakers' hands making
lace
- see her blog site for more details.

So I wrote her a poem to go with the display:

Hands above the bobbins
Hands with bobbins held
Move with speed to place a pin
Move slow to tension thread

Old hands, young hands
Hands both dark and fair
Hands young and plump with gift of youth
Hands lined with time and care.

Some with rings or bracelets hung
And nails of polish bright
Others show the scars of time
In the lamp's exposing light

But underneath's the product fine
With twisted thread in place
A joy to work, a joy to see
The delight of making lace.

[lace] Wearing and Caring for Lace

2016-08-01 Thread cec
A recent post about wearing lace got me to thinking. I have a lace
stole I have worn several times and now has some soiling near the center
back from my neck. What is the best way to launder it. I have heard
and read many recommendations but would like to hear from someone who
cleans the lace they wear regularly.

[lace] Lace in Prague

2017-01-11 Thread cec
All,

I have noticed the latest posts about traveling in England and it
reminded me it isn't too early to ask my questions.

In mid September 2017 I will be on a tour (with beaders) and have at
least one free day to visit museums or other places in Prague that is
not on the scheduled tour. Anyone have any suggestions for lace and/or
embroidery. My searches on the web hasn't gotten me much information on
Museums content in Prague.

We are going to go to tour a bead factory, button factory and blown
glass ornament factory while in the czech republic.
We travel out for a day or two to another city for this with classes
with the bead instructor Jill Wiseman who is on the tour with us.

[lace] Volunteers, Lace Newsletters, Lace Study Aids

2016-12-16 Thread cec
I am a long time member of the Washington DC Lace Guild (CRLG) and was a
member of the board (volunteering) for 15 years. I held about every
position except Secretary and Newsletter but I decided to step back as I
volunteer for many other organizations (Embroiderer's Guild and Quilt
Guild) and wanted to not be so overloaded. My lace guild has had a
problem for years getting volunteers and once we get one they work for
many years and then like me need to take a step back.

Although we have been trying for years to get younger members, our
membership is aging out. Also, many members work full time and don't
have the time to volunteer often. I have found this to be true in all
the "guilds" I belong too. My Embroiderer's guild hasn't been able to
get a secretary for many years. I am on the board of all the guilds I
belong to, except the lace guild now. I have also been on committees
for national seminars and conventions for EGA and IOLI. My Washington
guild has hosted three IOLI conventions since 1980 and I worked on two
of them.

I am in a 200 member quilt guild and we still have problems getting
volunteers. So the 70 member Lace Guild is even worse. I pleaded and
begged with appeals when I was President of the lace guild and it was
still slim pickings. I dislike seeing things get less support. If
someone has a good idea to entice volunteers I would love to hear it.

[lace] Lace in Museums

2017-04-14 Thread cec
I received the recent digest and read with interest the comments on lace
exhibits.
I don't see much in museums and have run into the dim lighting most of
the time.
The decorative arts museum in Williamsburg, Va has had several textile
exhibits which I have viewed.
They have additional temporary lighting in there display cases. A
button activates brigher lighting for a about a minute or a little less
(I've never timed it), and I have found that to be very helpful. You
don't want to repeatedly turn in on but you can get a better look.

It has been some years but when I went on a behind the scenes tour and
they opened their drawers to us, they allowed a flash light and
magnifier for taking a closer look, but they did limit our time. I
don't know if the museum continue to do that now. I'm looking forward
to my trip to Prague in September and hope to get a look at the textiles
in the various places on my tour. I've been told there is some lace in
the Jewish Museum and it is on my itinerary already.

I appreciate all the information I learn about on all the posts.
Especially from Jeri and Devon who know much, much more than I every
will.

I hope with the coming good weather in the US and other countries that
we all take the time to demonstrate and volunteer to make the public
aware of our love of lace.

[lace] Computerized Embroidery Designs - Lace

2017-06-12 Thread cec
One of my many hobbies is machine embroidery and I found a company
making designs that look very much like bobbin lace. Often the
digitizers call a floral design Lace when it isn't, but many of the
patterns at https://www.advanced-embroidery-designs.com/ are the closest
I've seen. Search for free standing lace then bobbin lace ont he site.
I've used one of them so far and I was impressed. I wanted to put it on
the side of a tote bag. Knowing it would get a lot of wear, I wanted it
to be durable. It has done well. I thought this might be of interested
based on the previous discussion of designing your own machine lace.

[lace] Armistice A. Turtora Passing

2017-10-29 Thread cec
I noticed Jeri's reference to an Armenian Lacer with CRLG and wanted to
pass the news.

Armistice had been in ill health recently and at 90 years old, passed
away October 10th. We have lost a very active advocate for tatting and
lace making in general. She also taught many people to tat and was a
force in our Guild for many years.

I didn't know her, in her younger days, but she was very active in her
community and served on Fairfax City, VA boards for recreation and
cultural arts. She was honored recently with the naming of a large
recreation field, The Armistice A. Turtora Bowl which is open space
usable for many family activities. She lobbied hard to not turn it into
a single use ball field. It is now a site for many activities used by
all ages and family gatherings.

She will be missed.

[lace] Lace in Pieceworks and Carolyn Wenzel

2018-04-27 Thread cec
I have had the opportunity to take three different needle lace classes from
Carolyn.
She is a superb teacher. Her lecture on her visits to Spain and learning the
lace there is very interesting.
She spoke at the Finger Lakes Lace Guilds Lace Days in Ithaca NY where I have
taken two classes from her.
My local lace guild had her down to Virginia to teach a beginner's class on
Gros Point.

She told us last year she hoped her article would be published in PieceWorks
and I am so glad it was.
(I'm still working on my class pieces ;-)
