Re: [lace] Tour All Hollows Museum in Honiton
You can tour the museum and go into all of the rooms. It's just like Street View. Put your mouse pointer where you want to be in the room, or through a doorway and click. Use the compass in the right bottom corner. You can go into all of the rooms, including those down the stairs. You can even go up into the gallery. [lace] Books/secondhand books
As Clare says, the Lace Guild has boxes and boxes of secondhand books donated by those clearing out after the death of a loved one. We also see them in lace groups. Most of us have already got the books we want, as well as ones we just desire. I've recently decided to save my relatives the task of disposing of my stuff when the time comes, so I'm in the process of sorting out all of my craft stuff and if it hasn't been used in the last two years, its time for it to go. At least I might be able to get at things instead of having to dive into piles to find what I want. It will also give my cat one less place to go mountain climbing and and caving! Because there's such a glut of lace books with the number of new lacemakers dwindling, I give those I've grown out of to charity shops in the hope that someone who hasn't thought of trying it will come across one and decide to give it a go. Maybe they'll get hooked. If just one person starts to make lace because of a book they found in a charity shop, that's one more person to keep it alive. Re: [lace] 150-year old wedding dress
The sequestrators are only supposed to take assets of the company that went bankrupt, i.e. the items that belonged to the company. Any items in the shop that were there to be dry cleaned weren't assets of the company as they belonged to the people who had taken them there to be dry cleaned. But I suppose they would have taken everything and then decided which items belonged to the business and which didn't. Leaving the wedding dress behind must mean that someone thought it was rubbish. Wonder if they'd have done the same if it was a Ming vase. Wonder how many items of value (not only monetary value) have been lost permanently in circumstances like this. The owner is obviously being very wise now in intending to take it to a cleaner who specialises in lace items. Jean Nathan in Poole, Dorset, UK Subject: Re: [lace] 150-year old wedding dress The thing about this story is that the dress was made by a few times gt grandmother for her wedding. It's been worn by many brides since then and was given to the bride by her grandmother for the big day. The dry cleaners had a 'By Royal Appointment', and so were deemed to be a good dry cleaners. However they went bankrupt and all 'assets' were seized... including all the clothing in the place! When they found out they tried to get the dress back only to be told it couldn't be found! Other brides were/are in similar situations. This is why they appealed to social media. Let's hope they are reunited with the dress soon. It was taken away by the sequestrators, and it's hoped it will be reunited with its owners permanently next week. I didn't get the original message either and it isn't in the archive, I don't receive any mail from AOL addresses, but was unawate that Yahoo was a problem. The only way I can see those from Jeri is to go to the archive even though I put her on my allowed list. I'm having some work done and the workman has an AOL address. I told him I didn't receive messages from that provider, and he said others hadn't received emails from him either and he wondered why. The solution in that case is to email him and he then replies to it. I wonder if there's a double problem here and the original sender not only used a Yahoo address to send from, but also send t to the dontpanix address instead of arachne, because they don't appear in the archive. [lace] Scanned lace books
They are not restricted to lace groups. The sites that have scanned books, not only lace but just bout any subject you care to name, are world-wide libraries where you can research a subject and read books, magazines and articles you may not have heard of or have access to, which has to be a good thing. They are mainly based in the USA. Some are only available to professionals in their field. Some only allow you to read, others allow you to download. Some require a subscription/fee for some facilities, some do not. Individuals collect their particular field of interest into their own collection. They allow you to upload to share; sometimes you have to join to do so. Unfortunately it's not only the copyright owners who scan and upload. Any copyright owner can demand their material be removed if they find it has been uploaded. I've seen less than a dozen lace books. They are useful if a book you are thinking about buying is included on one of these sites and you can look before you buy, and also for a book which is unobtainable/out of print, but obviously there are some who will abuse it. Happy Thanksgiving! I am writing with the hope that someone can help identify the source of a beaded lace bracelet. Our guild taught lacemaking techniques to Girl Scouts using a similar bracelet in October. After our positive experience with the Scouts, we decided to donate our idea to IOLI. Before doing so & upon closer inspection of the file, we noticed part of a name, that might be Debra Jenny, near pictures of sample bracelets. We do not have the original source material & do not know whether this is a copyright pattern or who worked the samples. Our source page seems to have been consolidated/copied & it was part of a collection of files that was donated to us. One our members enhanced the bracelet by creating a button start, increase/decrease rows & a macrame loop closure. Other members helped by working samples & refining these additional features. While this "new" bracelet bears little resemblance to the "Oneida lace--summer 2008" item, we have m! > ade numerous inquiries thru IOLI members to preclude any copyright issues. So far, we have come up empty handed. If anyone on Arachne can help, we would be most thankful. [lace] Electronic versions of lace books
You can download samples of some Kindle books to see how they're laid out. Taken me a bit of time to sort it out, but you need to make sure you've got the latest of Kindle to read samples - version 1.12.2 or later. Finally managed to download the sample of Practical Skills and it's similar to Lace Bee's description of Bobbin Lace Stitches in that one page is spread over several Kindle pages. Mainly it's one diagram per page, sometimes two per page. For instance for winding a bobbin, each stage is on a different page. On my tablet that' one diagram on a separate screen, but on my PC at least there are two pages side-by-side. Don't think I'll be bothering. [lace] Mini wire lace discovery
My immediate thought was What's wrong with using a hand drill, which most people will have probably have in their toolbox? but I can see that this is smaller and lighter. The manufacturer seems to have variations on it, and if you really want something particularly for thin wire or embroidery thread Maplins in the UK (equivalent to Radioshack in the USA) sell a miniature precision hand drill which is identical to the Spinster except it has a chuck instead of a hook. You can easily fix a hook in the chuck. Other countries must have similar stores. Apart from being more versatile than the Spinster, it's also a lot cheaper. Amazon is selling the Spinster for GBP14.95, Maplins is selling the mini drill for just GBP5.99 Jean Nathan in Poole, Dorset, UK - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Torchon and direction
I always thought that the reason for working some laces from the back was for several reasons including: Sewings joining end to start is on the wrong side and so is the sewing in of ends. The very short ends of threads thrown out and cut off weren't visible from the right side. if you need to add a pair in the middle of cloth/linen stitch by hanging them each side of a thread, the loop across that thread was on the wrong side and didn't show on the right side. If you're going to mount your lace on a backing and send the long threads cut off when you've finished through to the back of the mounting material, the threads are already on the back of the piece. RE: [lace] Copies of prickings from dark sources
Tracing and drawing are fine if your hands do what you want them to do. Mine don't now and it's very frustrating. Threading needle is difficult enough even with one of those wire thingies that you put trough the eye and pull the thread through, but getting a dot or a line (and a straight line) on to paper or card in the right place is hit and miss and very tiring. I used to draw markings on pricking card or trace but now I can't, so it's photocopy or scan and, if it's my own design use Lace XRP with snap-to-grid switched on. RE: [lace] Copying a brown pattern
Personally I only like working on blue prickings. I could eliminate the need for blue film by printing on blue card, but I like film covering. Can't work on red either. Even if I wanted to work on brown, making a brown copy would make any markings and notes I wanted to make on the copy less clear than if written on white. Jean Nathan in Poole, Dorset, UK And why not photocopy in colour, keeping the practical brown background? Then you would not need to make all that extra work of eliminating it and would not have to use the blue film. Well, I would do that. [lace] Copying a brown pattern
Copying a brown pattern with an empty cartridge is OK if your printer will allow you to do so. Mine won't. I have four cartridges, one black and three colour - cyan, magenta and yellow. If just one of them is empty, it won't print at all. If the black is low I then have the option of printing in black by a combination of the three colours to save what black ink is left. What I have done in the past is to scan the pricking in greyscale, increase the contrast so the black dots are really black and then use a photo editing program to replace the grey background using the colour replacement tool with white or use the paint bucket to fill the grey area with white. It depends on how the grey is made up as to whether the colour replacement tool will work or not. [lace] Tardis
Tardis stands for Time and Relative Dimension in Space. From the outside it looks like an old fashioned British Police Box - a shelter in which foot patrol police officer could shelter and from which members of the public could phone the police directly, long before the advent of the mobile phone. The Tardis is used by Dr Who (just known as The Doctor), a famous science fiction programme on TV which started in 1963 and is still going strong today, aimed just about anyone aged from 5 to 500. The Tardis used for travelling through time and space, and it's very much bigger on the inside than on the outside. If you want to refer to somewhere in which you can fit more than you think you could, we often say it's like the Tardis. Think you'd have trouble finding anone in the UK who doesn't know who the Doctor is and what the Tardis is. All the information is on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TARDIS including photos. [lace] Lace question on a quiz show
On the UK TV show 'Tipping Point' on Sunday evening the question in the category labelled 'Hobbies' was Which of these were the towns of Honiton and Nottingham famous for? Three options were given. [lace] Beginner-intermediate-advanced
I don't fit into any of the three categories. I've been making lace since 1997 and I'm happy with torchon, some Bedfordshire (except leaves), geometric Bucks and Bruges, but I have a problem with finishing and with fine threads because I don't have sufficient feeling and control in my fingers due to rheumatoid arthritis. I've even designed a few pieces and had a couple appear in the UK Lace magazine. Leaves are a problem. I've tried all the methods and will persist if I have to; my fingers don't always behave, but if I really want to I can use a bead instead (thanks for suggesting that Eve). I avoid darning in ends because I aim the needle, but it doesn't necessarily end up where I intend - (mounting on a background fabric means you can pull the threads through to the back of the fabric instead). Lack of sensitivity means I can break a thread while tensioning because I can't feel how much tension I'm applying so fine threads such as used in Honiton are out, but silk is wonderful for tensioning itself and not breaking. I don't worry if a thread breaks, and just run a new thread alongside the broken one. I couldn't handle bobbins without spangles because I use the spangle to pick up the bobbin - there are no lace police so, as it's the only method that works for me, I'll carry on doing it regardless of what others may say. It's either that or not make lace. If I want to make something that uses fine thread, I enlarge the pricking and do it in a thicker thread. Mistakes are design elements. I'm not going to make heirloom lace or study fine laces in museums and collections. I'm happy with what I do as a hobby. It's the process of making that I like, not the finished item. Although I do admire what many of you do, I don't aspire to do the same because I know and accept my limitations. [lace-chat] Old Testament computing
Old Testament computing In ancient Israel , it came to pass that a trader by the name of Abraham Com did take unto himself a young wife by the name of Dorothy. And Dot Com was a comely woman, broad of shoulder and long of leg. Indeed, she was often called Amazon Dot Com. And she said unto Abraham, her husband, Why dost thou travel so far from town to town with thy goods when thou canst trade without ever leaving thy tent? And Abraham did look at her as though she were several saddle bags short of a camel load, but simply said, How, dear? And Dot replied, I will place drums in all the towns and drums in between to send messages saying what you have for sale, and they will reply telling you who hath the best price. The sale can be made on the drums and delivery made by Uriah's Pony Stable (UPS). Abraham thought long and decided he would let Dot have her way with the drums. And the drums rang out and were an immediate success. Abraham sold all the goods he had at the top price, without ever having to move from his tent. To prevent neighbouring countries from overhearing what the drums were saying, Dot devised a system that only she and the drummers knew. It was known as Must Send Drum Over Sound (MSDOS), and she also developed a language to transmit ideas and pictures - Hebrew To The People (HTTP). And the young men did take to Dot Com's trading as doth the greedy horsefly take to camel dung. They were called Nomadic Ecclesiastical Rich Dominican Sybarites, or NERDS. And lo, the land was so feverish with joy at the new riches and the deafening sound of drums that no one noticed that the real riches were going to that enterprising drum dealer, Brother William of Gates, who bought off every drum maker in the land. Indeed he did insist on drums to be made that would work only with Brother Gates' drumheads and drumsticks. And Dot did say, Oh, Abraham, what we have started is being taken over by others. And Abraham looked out over the Bay of Ezekiel , or eBay as it came to be known. He said, We need a name that reflects what we are. And Dot replied, Young Ambitious Hebrew Owner Operators. YAHOO, said Abraham. And because it was Dot's idea, they named it YAHOO Dot Com. Abraham's cousin, Joshua, being the young Gregarious Energetic Educated Kid (GEEK) that he was, soon started using Dot's drums to locate things around the countryside. It soon became known as God's Own Official Guide to Locating Everything (GOOGLE). That is how it all began. And that's the truth. That type of fan is called a Jenny Lind. If you google Jenny Lind fan, there all sorts of images and information. Basically, instead of having a whole fan leaf spread across the sticks, each sticks has it's own feather-type shape attached separately. Eleven OXFAM charity shops in the UK have a bridal floor with ex-catwalk and pre-owned bridal gowns in four categories - lace-trimmed, embellished, classic and vintage. Prices are silly ranging from just GBP 25.00 to GBP 700.00. You can also buy on line. [lace] Chantilly lace
I can't find the book it was in but according to one on fashion, laces used for bridal wear were only referred to by two names. Having had a look on the web it now seems that they're using three - Guipure, Chantilly and Alencon - all machine made and which may or may not have any resemblance to traditional hand-made laces of the same names. It appears to be that Guipure means robust motifs joined together with brides rather than a net ground, Chantilly fairly fine with mesh ground and often with a border, Alencon a fine(ish) lace with all-over repeated outlined motifs. [lace] Bruge and Kant
If all lace books were translated into English, why shouldn't those in English be translated into all the other languages spoken by lace makers. Many English speakers can't speak a foreign language so are frustrated by not being able to read a book in say German. But I'm sure that many German lacemakers get frustrated at not being able to read a book in English. The latter is not as likely because very many more learn English as a second language than English speakers learn another language. Are we arrogant or just lazy? I suspect it's a combination of both. Fortunately many instruction books have such good diagrams that being able to understand the words isn't as much a handicap as it could be. If it's a case of wanting to read the history, then the best scholars learn the language in which it was originally written, otherwise they're getting it second hand, i.e. someone else's version rather than the author's. Think it's only 50 years in the US. Don't know about elsewhere. Vintage is really a worthless phrase - it's sometimes used to describe items a year old or less if it's no longer available and depending on what it is. A vintage computer could only be 10 or 15 years old. On antiques programmes, they now seem to be regarding the 1980s as vintage. Obviously the years will advance as time does. In the year 2000, 1900 was antique. Now it's 1914. I think most of us are vintage, and it won't be long before some of us are (hopefully) antique (we already are if you use the US version)! The title does say lace bobbin. The word lace is missing from the description. I thought needle case, but with no ends, needles would fall out. It's not clear if the grooves each end are a screw threads to take a screw on cap or just rings. Rollers for lace don't usually dip in the middle. Looks too new for animal ivory, but could be vegetable ivory. or as has been suggest some sort of plastic. Used as a knife rest, it would roll. The first page is about Honiton lace by Margaret Lewis of Allhallows Museum, who finishes by directing anyone who wants to learn how to make Honiton lace to on-line tutorials or to classes at Allhallows Museum. The second page is an interview with Gwynned Roberts of the Lace Guild, mainly about the work or the Lace Guild, and who apparently suggests simply look around for someone to teach you. Theres a sidebar discussing the Duchess of Cambridges wedding dress and the lace of Queen Victoria. The third page has a side bar about the Aragon Lacemakers in Bedfordshire, a paragraph about the Gawthorpe Hall textiles collection, but the rest of the page is about learning to make lace. Their suggestions are The Lace Guild Summer School, Allhallows museum or teach yourself using the House of Crafts ghastly lace making kit (which consists of a small polystyrene cylinder in a cardboard box with the poorest plastic bobbins imaginable and plastic beads), quote ideal introduction to lace making with clear patterns and tools for creating a selection of pieces including a flower decoration, bookmark and lace edging. Guaranteed to put anyone off lace making. Theres no mention of just how many lace makers there are in the UK and around the world, of contacting the Lace Guild for information in teachers, and lace groups in a particular area, of looking on the internet for lace groups on-line or in a particular area of the country, of going to the library or searching Amazon for instructions books. RE: [lace] Channer mat-copyright
Devon wrote: Copyright law is different in the US versus Britain, and I don't know anything about British copyright law. Is it the case that Miss Channer went through the formal process of copyrighting the design of the mat? If so at what date? In the UK there is no formal process of copyrighting. It's described in full in plain English on: http://www.copyrightservice.co.uk/copyright/p01_uk_copyright_law A couple of important points as far as we are concerned with Miss Channer's Mat, including the fact that copyright for it lasts for 70 years from the end of the calendar year in which Miss Channer (if she designed it) died: 3. Types of work protectedLiterary - song lyrics, manuscripts, manuals, computer programs, commercial documents, leaflets, newsletters articles etc. (70 years) Dramatic - plays, dance, etc. (70 years) Musical - recordings and score. (70 years) Artistic - photography, painting, sculptures, architecture, technical drawings/diagrams, maps, logos. (70 years) Typographical arrangement of published editions magazines, periodicals, etc. (25 years) Sound recording - may be recordings of other copyright works, e.g. musical and literary. (50 years) Film - video footage, films, broadcasts and cable programmes. (70 years) The Copyright (Computer Programs) Regulations 1992 extended the rules covering literary works to include computer programs. (70 years) 4. When rights occurCopyright is an automatic right and arises whenever an individual or company creates a work. To qualify, a work should be regarded as original, and exhibit a degree of labour, skill or judgement. (Some authors/designers send a copy of their work to themselves or their solicitor by registered post and lodge the sealed envelope with their solicitor before publication to prove it's their work if it never gets published.) 5. Who owns a piece of workNormally the individual or collective who authored the work will exclusively own the work and is referred to as the first owner of copyright under the 1988 Copyright, Designs and Patents Act. However, if a work is produced as part of employment then the first owner will normally be the company that is the employer of the individual who created the work. (Which would mean Ruth Bean owns the copyright if she employed Patricia Bury to produce the version they published as the supplement to In the Cause of English Lace.) It also states what is and is not permitted - it's an offence to copy work without the consent of the owner. Use for educational purposes is allowed (but I don't think saying you are using it to learn Floral Bucks would count as educational!) [lace] Miss Channer mat- copyright
Just looked at the Copyright Law page again and it states that: For literary, dramatic, musical or artistic works70 years from the end of the calendar year in which the last remaining author of the work dies.If the author is unknown, copyright will last for 70 years from end of the calendar year in which the work was created, although if it is made available to the public during that time, (by publication, authorised performance, broadcast, exhibition, etc.), then the duration will be 70 years from the end of the year that the work was first made available. So for any other versions which have no designer noted on them, it would really need to be established when it was first made available to establish when copyright runs out - good luck with that. It's mentioned in Thomas Wright's Romance of the Lace Pillow with a photo of part of it on page 64. There's a photo of the finished item on: http:://www.cyberlink.co.uk/pblc/cope.htm The person who jokingly challenged Malcom Down to make it was me after he'd completed Miss Channer's Mat, and he would gleefully show me how far he'd got at each meeting of PBLC. I doubt that Patricia Bury would be willing to make a another different adaption from the one she has in her collection. It must have taken a long time to draft and test the one she did. The one in her collection presumably is the copyright of someone else, possibly Catherine Channer - how complicated these things can be. The one I have has obviously been professional, probably mechanically, pricked. It probably cost a lot to have the machinery set up to do that, and that could be part of the reason why Ruth Bean was unwilling to produce more. But I suspect that most people would be willing to prick it themselves if they could just get their hands on a legal print of the pricking. RE: [lace] Re: Chandler's Mat
Adele wrote: Hmmm. Not to start an international copyright war, or anything, but - suppose somebody did make that mat from the photo, without using the pricking that Ruth Bean published. Would they be able to, say, make a hi-resolution scan of the mat that they made, and then either sell it or provide it to lacemakers for free, and have it all be perfectly legal? I wouldn't have thought it would be legal. I haven't compared the two, but isn't the Ruth Bean one a version of the mat - i.e. not an exact copy of the original. Both of those designs and photos would still be under copyright, but you could always make a pricking of a similar mat of your own design which had different elements in it. If the original and Ruth Bean ones aren't identical, then that's what has been done there and Patricia Bury produced a pricking based on the photo. You'd have to get legal advice on whether or not you could photocopy the existing pricking and than makes changes to it or if you'd have to start with a blank canvas. RE: [lace] Miss Channer's mat
Liz Baker wrote: I was sad to hear that Ruth Bean had died, it does explain the fact that her book list was disappearing from print. There were a number of books that she published on lace that I used to learn and without which I would either not have master a technique or taken much longer to do so. When I posted on here so me time ago that some Ruth Bean Bedfordshire books were out of print, I immediately got an email from her husband asking where I got that information because they were still in print. I told him that no suppliers were carrying the books and there was no Ruth Bean web site, so if they were in print how was anyone supposed to find them. Apparently there was a Facebook page, but many of us have no desire to have anything to do with Facebook. As far as I and many others were concerned Ruth Bean had stopped publishing anything. If he has sold the business, again who knows the business has been sold and whether or not any books are in print? There doesn't appear to be any information on the web - I suppose it's on Facebook. Don't these people realise they're missing out on a lot of people if they don't also have a web page? [lace] Miss Channer's mat
As I understand it, there was a photo/picture of the original mat in In the Cause of English Lace by Catherime Channer and Anne Buck. Catherine Channer died in 1949, so under UK copyright law the original pricking, assuming she did it, would be out of copyright in 2019, 70 years after the author's death. But does anyone know where it is? The pricking published by Ruth Bean was reconstructed for them by Patricia Bury, and Ruth Bean owns the copyright to this version of the pricking. [lace] some comments about the list
I don't think changes can be made to the list. It's an old and simple system, and we are here because it is owned and was set up and is paid for by one individual, Liz Reynolds, to whom we are all extremely grateful. When changes, which can't happen, have been suggested in the past, groups such as Yahoo were set up and some Arachne members joined them, but most still remained faithful to Arachne, I think because of its immediacy. You can post a question, and almost immediately get an answer. We can't post pictures or other attachments, but so what? We have Flickr. And one extremely big advantage for me at least is that we don't get bombarded by adverts and other extraneous stuff. The message is all I want and that is what we get. Lace content: I acquired a very large, old, lumpy, polystyrene, large hexagonal pillow at a cost of almost nothing. It was rejected by others as being past it. I took the cotton cover off, sanded the worst of the lumps off, put a piece of thick wool coating material from my fabric stash on top and replaced the cotton cover. I now have an almost new-feeling hexagonal pillow. I've now just got to grow my arms long enough to reach to the far side of it. [lace] Lace8
One simple thing I find very useful in Lace8, which I don't think is in earlier versions, is the ability to have a picture/photo on the page along with a pricking. The resize of a background image is also very much easier - instead of putting in measurements, you just drag handles. When I'm going to start a new project and it doesn't come with thread path diagrams, I scan it and put it into the program as a background, resize it to match the dots and then put all the dots and markings in on one section. I then add a picture of the finished section to the page and use it to help me work out the thread paths, which I draw on the pricking. Because my hands don't always work properly, it's easier for me to put the thread paths on by computer than by hand - I can undo mistakes easier than Tipexing out the wrong bits drawn by hand. I adjust the sizes of the pricking and picture so I can print them on one page for reference while working. If you're used to the toolbar selection of functions it takes a while to get used to the right-click on the page way of doing it. Although most other programs used this method, the way RXP does it gets ingrained into your brain. I'd add to Ruth's recommendation - go to the Ilsoft website and download the demo version of Lace8 - I'm sure it's complete except for printing and saving, but Ruth can confirm this - and try before you buy. RE: [lace] Knitting v crochet
Patricia wrote: I can knit and have done so since my teen years but I find crochet difficult. It isn't that I don't understand as I do and it is simple. The problem lies in how I have to hold my hands to crochet; it causes problems for them and did so long before I developed arthritis in my hands and wrists. I think it is keeping the fingers close together as you hold hook in one hand and work in the other. Making buttonhole edges on knitting with a crochet hook is much easier as there is a whole lot of work to hold on to. I found it impossible to knit and do crochet when I developed rheumatoid arthritis. I tried all sorts of things over several years and can now knit with bamboo needles (circular needles just don't work for me) and I can crochet with Clover Soft Touch crochet hooks. The flat pad means you don't have to worry about the hook rotating and it's thick enough and soft enough to be comfortable. I've tried various types of hook, but only Clover Soft Touch work for me. I've been collecting the materials together to make a misers purse (stainless steel ear stretchers for pierced ears are available in a variety of diameters and eminently suitable for the sliding rings), but I've found that I can't crochet with silk. There's something wrong about the feel that makes it impossible. Feels as if my fingers are tangling. I'm fine with the same thickness of cotton. So it might be worth trying different hooks and threads if you really want to crochet. Any thread is fine for lacemaking because I'm not touching the threads and can move the bobbins by the spangles - there are no lace police. It's that or don't make lace. [lace] Heelball
I've got a stick of heelball from when I did my teacher training many, many years ago. We had it for taking rubbings of tree bark, stone walls and other textured surfaces. Could be useful in getting natural patterns as inspiration for designing lace. As for my pen thickening, I've concluded that it's because I don't have fine feeling in my fingers, or hold it properly so I mash the point. My husband, who was a draughtsman, tried it and just Well, you've wrecked that! [lace] Blue film, etc
In the UK readily available means you go to a specialist supplier for what you want. Outlets like Asda (Walmart) only carry goods that will sell quickly, and blue film isn't one of them. They might sell self-adhesive shelf covering, but what I've seen in my local Wilko is opaque and patterned, so absolutely no use to us. Even the few hobby shops we have don't sell blue clear, but they MIGHT sell small rolls of other colours if it's used in whatever the current fad craft is. Otherwise we mostly buy at lace fairs or on-line. In Poole and Bournemouth, we're lucky in that a supplier is located nearby and we can order by phone or on line and collect from her home. I understood that glazed card is/was used for electrical circuit insulation or shotgun cartridge casings, but that could be wrong. Card and paper weights in the whole of Europe are stated in grams per square metre (gsm), and anything mentioning pounds means nothing to us, just as I suspect gsm doesn't mean a lot to those in the US. Personally I'm a belt and braces person - print on white paper, stick it on glazed card, cover with blue film with it wrapped round to the back to give a smooth edge, then prick. I think it's a sort of ritual security blanket - if I do that, I will enjoy making my lace. I know that using a new pan scrubber on shiny clear film dulls it. Does the same apply to laminating pouches? Needlelace had to change when architects' linen became impossible to find - but moved to blue film! We adapt as necessary. Those of us who have sewing machines which can embroider in hoops can produce this kind of lace. Lots of designs available on the web, some free and some very intricate. Instead of fabric, water soluble stabilizer is used, load the design into the machine, press 'go' and disappear to do something else while the machine produces the lace and then remove it from the machine and hoop and dissolve away the backing. The hand part whether making or finishing is setting everything up and dissolving away the stablizer before pressing. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. I don't use my machine to replace bobbin lacemaking - it's nothing like it. But it is useful if you just want a quick bit of decoration on something. I put quick in inverted commas because it isn't in sewing machine terms - probably 30 minutes up to an hour to complete a design. But if it's one colour, you can go and do something else. Because I havent got a dedicated sewing machine space, I haven't done any for a while, but I use my lace pillow cover cloth to try out designs to see if I like them. So far it's got an embroidered picture of my last dog, Poole Bobbin Lace logo (4 different attempts), a bolster pillow with lace and bobbins and a piece of lace with two spangled bobbins hanging from it - the last two were bought designs. Saves throwing away what the machine has done as well as brightening up a plain cover cloth, which I throw over the pillow when not working on it. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Storms in the UK
Where I am on the south coast, we had quite a bit of wind and a lot of rain. Several trees were brought down in the area, some blocking roads, other narrowly avoiding houses. We have a huge oak tree in the garden and there's a lot more light coming through it now, as it lost about half its leaves - got no idea where they ended up, as they're not in neighouring gardens. A plant pot was blown over, as was our recycling bin, and one of the soffit panels on the front of our garage was torn off. There were already a couple of cracks in the garage roof, and that part of the garage was flooded. The wind woke me up twice in the night when it was really blowing. Not anywhere near as bad as 1987 - that really was bad. All was quiet by mid-day when I went to my lace group. Saw no sign of trees down, and just one road sign lying on the grass verge. Everyine was there and no-one seemed to have suffered anything much. LACE CONTENT: I am currently working on the simplest butterfly from Ulrike Lhor's 'Butterfly and Moth'. If that's the simplest, I have no intention of attempting the others! I found the head extremely difficult, crossing the threads from one side to the other and working half stitch in one colour inside another in whole stitch. After four attempts, I decided to leave it as it was as a design feature. Probably doesn't help that I changed the colours to use what I already had. I also enlarged it to A4 and it's fiddly enough at that magnification. [lace] Learning lace on your own
One reason for starting with Torchon is that is geometric on 45 degrees and if you make a mistake such as not closing the pin or forgetting a twist it is soo obvious and it might not be so obvious in other laces. So it's great if you're the type of person who wants to know that their work is perfect. Personally, I prefer my work to have design features and don't fret if there's a mistake (or even a lot of them). It's just for me, and even if I give it away, the recipient doesn't usually know it isn't perfect. I don't want lacemaking to be a chore - I do it because I enjoy it. [lace] Third hand
An alternative to hackle pliers are surgical forceps (hemostat in the US) or a mini test clip adapter availble in packs of two from electrical shops such as Radio Shack or Maplins. The mini test clips don't hold the thread as tightly as hackle pliers, but are easier to use if you have difficulty squeezing. I find forceps easier than hackle pliers because the squeezing action uses the whole hand rather than just the fingers. [lace-chat] A RETIREE'S LAST TRIP TO WAL-MART
Yesterday I was at my local Wal-Mart buying a large bag of Purina dog chow for my loyal pet, Jake, the Wonder Dog and was in the check-out line when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog. What did she think I had an elephant? So because I'm retired and have little to do, on impulse I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, I was starting the Purina Diet again. I added that I probably shouldn't, because I ended up in the hospital last time, but that I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms. I told her that it was essentially a Perfect Diet and that the way that it works is, to load your pants pockets with Purina Nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in line was now enthralled with my story.) Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care, because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I stopped to pee on a Fire Hydrant and a car hit me. [lace-chat] Two prawns
TWO PRAWNS Far away in the tropical waters of the Caribbean , two prawns were swimming around in the sea One called Justin and the other called Christian. The prawns were constantly being harassed and threatened by sharks that inhabited the area. Finally one day Justin said to Christian, 'I'm fed up with being a prawn; I wish I was a shark, and then I wouldn't have any worries about being eaten.' A large mysterious cod appeared and said, 'Your wish is granted' Lo and behold, Justin turned into a shark. Horrified, Christian immediately swam away, afraid of being eaten by his old mate. Time passed (as it does) and Justin found life as a shark boring and lonely. All his old mates simply swam away whenever he came close to them. Justin didn't realize that his new menacing appearance was the cause of his sad plight. While swimming alone one day he saw the mysterious cod again and he thought perhaps the mysterious fish could change him back into a prawn. He approached the cod and begged to be changed back, and, lo and behold, He found himself turned back into a prawn. With tears of joy in his tiny little eyes Justin swam back to his friends and bought them all a cocktail. (The punch line does not involve a prawn cocktail - it's much worse). Looking around the gathering at the reef he realized he couldn't see his old pal. 'Where's Christian?' he asked. 'He's at home, still distraught that his best friend changed sides to the enemy became a shark', Came the reply. Eager to put things right again and end the mutual pain and torture, he set off to Christian's abode. As he opened the coral gate, memories came flooding back. He banged on the door and shouted, 'It's me, Justin, your old friend, come out and see me again.' Christian replied, 'No way man, you'll eat me. You're now a shark, the enemy, And I'll not be tricked into being your dinner.' Justin cried back 'No, I'm not. That was the old me. I've changed.'.
