Re: [LegacyUG] entering royal titles
You'll probably get lots of suggestions and things get complicated with the Windsor's. In 1917, the name House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha was changed to House of Windsor by King George V (Edward's son), largely because of anti-German sentiment during WW I. So Edward VII (son of Queen Victoria) and his son, George V (until his 1917 proclamation), ruled as the House of SCG. In 1917, however, George V issued this proclamation: Now, therefore, We, out of Our Royal Will and Authority, do hereby declare and announce that as from the date of this Our Royal Proclamation Our House and Family shall be styled and known as the House and Family of Windsor, and that all the descendants in the male line of Our said Grandmother Queen Victoria who are subjects of these Realms, other than female descendants who may marry or may have married, shall bear the said Name of Windsor... Thus, Edward VIII, later Duke of Windsor and son of Edward VII, had the royal surname of Windsor. You could reasonably use Windsor as the royal surname and use the suffix field to denote his two titles: King Edward VIII, later Duke of Windsor. In 1952, Queen Elizabeth II reaffirmed George V's proclamation and managed to make this situation even more complicated. Some of her descendants are Windsor, but others are Montbatten-Windsor. As for the Archduke of Austria, I believe he was of the House of Habsburg. I'm sure others will have better suggestions; as I said previously, things can get complicated. [LegacyUG] An apparent bug?
I entered the following new individual: Edward Grantham and in the suffix field entered I (capital i for the first rather than senior). I then got the following Standardization Tip The Given name or Surname for this individual is only on character. You should verify or correct this. First, both the given name and surname definitely have more than one character. Second, why should entering a capital i, rather than senior generate this message? Finally, the Standardization Tip is grammatically wrong. Neither given nor surname is a proper noun and neither word should be capitalized. Re: [LegacyUG] Two Report functions do not work
Sherry, Several years ago, the Generations program (now defunct) developed what we called the disappearing data syndrome. I won't go into all the details, but the cause was eventually traced to conflicts between Generations and some programs' drivers. (You can go to http://users.sisna.com/mhobart/Generations/Generations%20Tips.html and select programs interactions with Generations for more details.) The only way to determine the problematic programs was to go into Selective Startup Mode, deselect all but the most critical Windows components, and then reselect the deselected programs one-by-one, and test Generations after each re-selection to see if the problem reappeared. Given the apparent randomness of this reports problem and the difficulty trying to replicate it, could the issue have a similar root cause, i.e., unknown drivers conflicts between Legacy and certain other programs? [LegacyUG] Non-alpha characters in name fields
I've received some data concerning purported children of a man. This data is not proven, but is, according to the researcher, a collection of data from various unsourced web sites. I would like to enter this data, but in a manner that marks the data as speculative. My thought is to use parentheses as the first and last character of the names, such as (John) (Doe). Thus, I would immediately recognize that the data is speculative and should probably be excluded from written reports. I can see nothing in the Legacy documentation that forbids using these non-alpha characters in the name fields and in GEDCOM files. However, can someone confirm that this practice would not cause problems with the program or a GEDCOM file? Re: [LegacyUG] Same-Sex Partnerships
Ken, This is not an issue of discrimination, so please don't think that way. As Sherry correctly notes, dealing with this issue involves very complex programming issues, which can be complicated even more if the couple adopts children or is married in Massachusetts or has a registered partnership in one of the states or cities that recognizes such partnerships. My solution, which is not perfect, is rather simple. I have a unique event called Partnership. I use an event date that usually correlates to the date the partnership was begun or whatever date the couple prefers. In the notes section, I enter the relevant data. I use this event for the person who is related to me and the partner is noted in the event notes. I also carefully explain to the couple the limitations of the software and why the data is recorded the way it is. Admittedly, this is imperfect, but it does record the data. As for the event notes, once you've generated the appropriate reports, you could then edit the report and move that partnership data to the section where marriage notes are normally included. It will take time, but I'm sure the developers of Legacy and other programs will address these issues. But it will be interesting to see if all the developers agree on a common protocol or if each developer goes its own way! Re: [LegacyUG] Another refinement
Elsie, I see what you are trying to accomplish, but must admit this is a rather labor intensive and tedious job. Once the set relationship function is used, I wish that Legacy would display ALL the relationships between the source person and the other person. For example, my nephew is related to his mother 3 times and to his father 5 times! Unfortunately, Legacy only displays one relationship and where there are multiple relationships, I still don't understand what relationship Legacy chooses to select. If the programmers do add a function to display on reports the relationships of each person to the source person (and I hope they do), I hope Legacy will print ALL the relationships or at least give us the option to do so. Re: [LegacyUG] Generating a mailing list
Hi, Cathy, My mailing addresses appear as marriage event addresses because when I transferred my data from Generations to Legacy, that is where the addresses went. It is just now that I've realized a problem exists. It appears I'll have to manually edit all the data, a daunting task, to say the least. Unfortunately, neither the user's manual nor the in-program help index discuss this matter in any detail. Perhaps the programmers, at some point, can include a more helpful discussion of the topic in a future upgrade. [LegacyUG] Generating a mailing list
I need help trying to generate a mailing. I have used the marriage address, for married couples, and the person address, for widows, widowers and singles, to enter mailing addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, etc. Unfortunately, when entering that data, I did not tag the address screen. Now, I need to generate a mailing list for the living descendants of my paternal grandparents. I want the report to show names as Mr Mrs so-and-so or Mr./Miss/Ms so-and-so and include the addresses, phone numbers and email addresses. The list should also include the divorced spouse, where that is applicable. I have been trying to do this all day, to no avail. Is there a way to do this in Legacy? (It was so easy in the old Generations program!) Or am I stuck with having to manually edit each address to tag the address screen? (If I did this manually for every address in my data, I'm looking at 5,000+ addresses, a formidable task.) [LegacyUG] Legacy and Vista memory usage
A recent thread discussed the (apparent) large memory requirements of Legacy when printing large books. And that brings me to Microsoft's recently released Vista. The articles I have read recommend a minimum of 1 GIG of RAM for running Vista and I've even seen some experts recommending a minimum of 2 GIG of RAM for Vista. Which brings me to my question. As Legacy has such large memory requirements and Vista has huge memory requirements, just how much RAM does one need for Legacy to properly run on the Vista platform, especially if one is printing a large book? [LegacyUG] Relationship calculator wrong...again...v6.0.0.118
I have yet another problem with the relationship calculator and the problem can be duplicated. Robert and Larry are brothers. Larry has son John out-of-wedlock with Sarah. Sarah's data has been entered as the mother and the marriage status is set as unmarried and there is no marriage date entered. Setting relationships with Robert as self and running the relationships report incorrectly shows Sarah as Robert's sister-in-law. This is wrong as Larry and Sarah never married, although John should show as Robert's nephew. I've reported this to Legacy as a bug. [LegacyUG] Relationship calculator wrong...v6.0.0.117
Here is what I have. Mary had two children out-of-wedlock from two different men. Child #1 is William and Child #2 is Robert. Robert had a son named Larry. Setting relationships with William as self, Legacy properly shows Robert as a half-brother and Larry as a half-nephew. Setting relationships with Robert as self does not show William as a half-brother. Setting relationships with Larry (son of Robert) as self also creates a problem. Mary is properly shown as grandmother, but William is not shown as half-uncle and the half-cousin relationships for William's children also do not show. The good news is that I've identified the source of the problem. We know the father of Robert and that name is duly recorded. We do not know the father of William and I had left that name blank. If I add a dummy name as the father of William and reset relationships with Robert as self, the problem disappears. If I delete the dummy name and reset relationships with Robert as self, the problem reappears. It seems that Legacy cannot find the proper relationships for a child as self if one of the parents is unknown. I've only tested this with half-relationships, but I wouldn't be surprised if the problem also exists for full relationships. Can someone else duplicate this problem? Can the programmers fix the problem? Jon Raymond St Paul Park, MN Web site: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~raymond/ Have you unlocked the real power of Legacy? Re: [LegacyUG] Question... Tracking dogs
Paul, I agree with you. When my sister gave birth to her son, everyone was so excited. One day after they returned home, my sister put her son on the bed for a nap. Soon afterwards, my sister realized the golden retriever, who was in the house, was missing. My sister walked into the bedroom and found the dog on the bed trying to nurse my nephew! From that point on, the dog and my nephew were as thick as thieves. It was a sad day when Brandy died. [LegacyUG] Which report is best?
I've been helping a cousin with his paternal grandfather's side of the family. Thus far I have only about 100 names, but there are several branches. As he does not use Legacy, I want to print a report for everyone in the database and include all of the data so he can then input the data into his software. Re: [LegacyUG] Norwegian birth place question
Rich, For some reason I never received your reply, although it is found in the archives. Maybe AOL's spam filter has struck again...gin. You make some interesting suggestions. I'd suspect that Norwegian researchers are not the only ones dealing with this issue. What you propose is very similar to what TMG already offers. (And if I recall correctly, Legacy v5 was to have a witness feature similar to TMG, but we never saw that, either.) I'd agree with you that perhaps Legacy will incorporate some feature that will allow us to track this data. Until then, it is almost impossible to do. [LegacyUG] Norwegian birth place question
Those of you working with Norwegian genealogy are familiar with the question of birth places, i.e., on which farm was someone born. For example, Olea was born on Foss in Grue, Hedmark, Norway. With the default format, the output is Olea was born in Foss, Grue, Hedmark, Norway and that is grammatically wrong. The output should read, Olea was born ON Foss IN Grue...etc I'd like to have the data not only read correctly, but also have the indices record the gard (farm) names as well as the place names. Re: [LegacyUG] Out-of-wedlock children...another bug?
With thanks to an Australian lister, I've managed to enter two of the three out-of-wedlock children in the manner I wanted. (I don't know the name of the third child.) Cousin Mary now has three marriages with the first two showing an unknown husband. I did this by creating a dummy husband and marriage, adding the child and then deleting the husband from the marriage. Legacy now shows the husband as unknown. However, now there is another problem. The two children entered are Vern and Rick. If I use Rick as the focus person and set relationships, a problem appears. On the view screen for any of Rick's half-siblings, Legacy displays the relationship as Half Source. A similar problem appears in another branch of my data. My g-g-grandmother was married twice. The relationships to me for the children from the second marriage should be Half Third Cousin, but no relationship is displayed at all. Is either or are both of these relationship problems part of the relationship bug that was introduced in v6.0.0.110 or have I found something else? [LegacyUG] Out-of-wedlock children
I posed this question once before, but am still having problems with the data entry. I have a cousin, Mary, who had three out-of-wedlock children with three different men before she married and had six children in that marriage. For the three out-of-wedlock children, I do not know the names of the fathers. Legacy insists on adding a father before children can be entered, which is what I do not want. I tried adding a dummy father, entering the child and then unlinking the dummy father from the mother. However, at that point the child is an orphan with no parents. If I then try to link the child to the mother, I have to link to the known marriage; again, that is what I do not want. How can I add the three children to Mary and not have to include unknown fathers or link the children to the known marriage? Ideas...please.
