What problem Pat?
A massive Master Source list is far more of a problem unless you never reuse a
Master Source - but if you don't reuse your Master Sources then you can't use
the very useful Show List feature.
I make Master Sources with the use of Show List in mind.
For example, with Church

I started out with Basic Sources. There are still close to 400 of them. Is
there any way to convert them to Source Writer?
In the alternative, suggestions for redoing them all while retaining the
links and remaining sane?

As a possible aid to my conversion of sources, can I open the same Legacy

I didn't realize having Legacy installed on more than one computer was a
no-no. It was always ok in TMG, just don't use at the same time. (And that
could be different since I moved to Legacy several years ago.)

Actually, Sherry has posted here within the last 24 or 48 hours to the
contrary. You can have Legacy installed on two computers with the one
license.
Have you looked at the split screen view? You can have two copies of
the same file *displayed* on the screen, or two different files open
With the split screen view you don't get two menus. Legacy will not allow
you to open two menus in the same instance of the program to compare
anything. I hate that about Legacy actually.

You don't need 2 menus with split screen. The active database will have the
title bar colored so it is obvious and the other open database window title
bars will be dimmed. Prior versions of Legacy allowed for up to 9 databases to
be open simultaneously even though it was pretty crowded on
But for what I need to do I need to have two active menus, ie, two versions
of my source list so I can see what I am doing in changing and don't
totally screw things up.
The silence on the subject of an easy way makes me think there isn't one.

Cheryl,
You can search the Archives for “Source conversion” and you will find Geoff’s
message on how to do this. The message is dated Wed, 18 Jun 2008 11:03”58 –0700
I found it by going to the Legacy Home tab and clicked on the Legacy News
hyperlink then on the next screen on the right hand
Somehow I accidentally created a web page. Please tell me how to delete
this. I am not ready to share on the Internet yet. Thanks for your help!

If not, then it only exists as a file within your Legacy desktop software

Whew! That wasn't so easy to find. Thanks. Do I gather that that was 6
years ago and there is still no tool? And probably never will be? Because
this is REALLY time consuming. I'd sure hate to spend all that time and
then one finally comes out.
I wonder if I pulled the file into another program
I'm not sure. It happened so quickly - not sure what I got into. A tab on
my computer popped up with an address beginning with

I find the Basic sources incomplete. Maybe it's me? It would be a LOT
easier to convert to Basic.

I had about 1500 sources when I started using Legacy. This is my system to
retain links:
(1) Add the source in Source Writer.
(2) Link to the person/event.
(3) Remove the old style version of that source from the person/event.
(4) Old style sources eventually have no more links so every once in
That is more or less what I have been doing. And sometimes I add the
SourceWriter version to the current data and then delete the Basic from
that person.
I do wish I could just deal with genealogy and not all the housekeeping
tasks though. :-/

The other option is to run a Source Report and save to PDF and have that
