I assume you already tried changing the 8 characters that can show in the ribbon from the selection of special characters.  If the characters you need are not in the table, then Millennia support should get involved.  It may require a different code set.  Be sure to check HelpSearchCharacter

Legacy can only support Western European fonts. If this character is not in the Windows Character Map for Western European characters, then Legacy can't use it. Doing a little digging around, I found that some of the Hawaiian characters are Unicode fonts, which Legacy doesn't support at this
