Your spreadsheet example works unless the person went by their middle name and that's the only name you have for them and you don't know whether you're dealing with a person's first or middle names. I guess, if you were sure that John in your example was really the first name, you could come up

Robert: As an additional thought, does your questioner want to identify those remaining names where there really is only a middle initial, or no middle name at all, as opposed to people with missing parts to their name? That might prevent additional work if he or she runs this list every year or
