I did try the GEDCOM re-install and then the original version
re-install under a different name, but the one that did the trick was
to do a system restore to a few days ago.
The only major system change during that time was that I had tried to

Exporting everything to a new Legacy file rather than a Gedcom also
sometimes works where Check/Repair doesn't. Avoids any Gedcom hassles.
