One approach would be to install the Minimum Graphical
System; this takes approximately 360 MB of an ext3
filesystem using SLES8. You could then add additional
minidisks to your guest as required.

I think you have one or both of these problems:
1. a hardware problem wherein Linux cannot extract information it is

On Red Hat systems, it would be something like

I'm not at all sure that SUSE shipped a copy of that package.

You should be able to mount a Windows share onto the Linux file system.
Take a look at the mount command with the '-t smb' option (mount may not
require -t smb, but that's where the smb option will be on the man
page).

According to the Samba folks, the preferred method these days is something
more like this:
mount -t smbfs //systemname/sharename /mountpoint \
-o username=userid,workgroup=domainorworkgroupname

You should do this with init scripts run by Linux, not external logins. You
may want to combine this approach with some simple REXX coding to check
startup order, etc, but the bulk will need to be done in the Linux world.
Look in /etc/init.d. You'll find everything you need in that directory. Be

There are definitely some problems in this area, but I'm not sure how to

We're not allowed to put pw's in execs or files so on SLES 7 we used the
bootshell.cc program (search the archives) and for SLES8 we just do a 'cp
signal linuxid shutdown' and that does the trick.

Since init is effectivly uid 0 while starting the system up, the scripts in

system resource gets started -- user
I would say that the problem almost definitely lies in the realm of the qeth
and qdio drivers. As I mentioned before, starting the newtwork after removing the
qeth and qdio modules did initially clear my problems up. Simply restarting
the network wasn't sufficient, the modules had to be removed.
The problem I see is intermittent. I can go a while without seeing it, and
then it might be very frequent, then go away again. In all cases, in
between instances, network response is normal.
The LCDS runs z/VM 4.3, not 4.4, so I would say that is not a factor.
