Hi,
one of my machines is running RH8.0, it has a total of 512MB of RAM, 750MB
of swap.
I've noticed that when the machine is working real hard, it uses up to 100%
of its physical memory, but not a single byte of swap is used
can anyone think of a reason why ?
I've been using SmoothWall for a long time now with ADSL, I agree that as a
firewall with pptp it isn't working on Israeli lines, I'm using it only as a
router + firewall (3 legs - inter/intra/dmz) and as such it is very good.
About the "forked" distro, it's still based on the 2.2 kernel, with a

Hi.
A while ago there
was someone on this list that sells hardware, for fairly cheap prices if I
remember correctly.
Could that someone
contact me please?
(anyone else who
sells hardware is welcome to contact me as well of course).

Ok problem resolved ...finally.
For those who will have the problem in the future...i just cant believe
i'm the only one with this shit :)
attached is my current working lilo.conf.
The advice on adding the lines of disk=... was indeed very helpfull, the
catch was to try many versions of it

thanks :)
any other ideas ?

ok the system is based on:
SE440BX-2 motherboard (currently with the P15 BIOS version) , PIII CPU
450, 256 MB RAM, 2 HD - 15GB WD(Win2K) and 4.3 GB Quantom (Linux).
1st IDE: WD HD
2nd IDE: CD-ROM *52 (SM)
Quantom HD (SS).
the 2nd HD was a PS but it had the same results
i say agai
Ok.
I downgraded my bios from P17 to P15...meaning two generations, dating a
year back...
still the same results.
This is stopping to be interesting and begins to be annoying.
I'de love to hear any ideas.
Has anyone had these problems before (With Win2K or linux)?
and if so how were they solved?
Basically what it means is that my BIOS has problems with the HD's...
I just upgraded to the latest version of my bios, it solved a few
problems i had before (liek it not being able to boot from CD)..
If it is true then I have to downgrade the bios... which is an
interesting task on its own...

Hi list.
I just finished installing a new linux system (RH7.1 based).
the system was installed on a new HD which is currently configured as a
secondary slave on a PIII machine with SE440BX-2 motherboard.
I'm having a few problems here:
1. A bit off topic but might be related, the PM HD is a 15GB

This
may sound silly but you hve to check the following things:
1. did
u actualy install the new kernel, and if u have more then one in the lilo boot ,
is the new one running?
2. You
have to enable in the new kernel all the PPP stuff and the netfilter stuff to
use IPTables.
You cant normally telnet to a switch, a switch has no IP addy of it own, the
RJ45 doesn't stand for an IP connection, its a different kind of direct
cable connection.
Telnet is only possible in the most sophisticated switches which are
actually more like routers, those have an IP addy.

Regarding switch types, I've worked mostly with Intel and Cisco switches,
they both have configuration abilities like the ones I specified before and
many more, a good switch can have the abilities of a simplified router.
regarding the specific problem with the connection speeds, unlike the hub,

Check the switch in the back (or front...i dont know what your switch looks
like)
it should have at least a serial connection, its the direct cable
connection.
altough some have a RJ45 conection for direct cable.
like i said, just tap into it and check what's the current config.
is it a used switc
Unlike a 10/100 hub a switch will not automatically handle differences in
communication speeds.
I never used 3com switches but they all have one thing in common - the
direct cable connection, some even a telnet connection.
All you have to do is enter the interface and configure the switch, I beliv
eel they can afford to work for MUCH
less then they are worth, or for free, I don't mean to discourage that, If
u have the free time and don't need the money...go for it.

Pardon me for interupting this but
50$ a hour is a LOW rate for a good programmer...they go up to 80 and
usually work for 65-70.
To reach such a level means you deserve it, no one will dare pay you less
then you deserve, cause then they will get just what they paid for.

I agree with the fact that if u limit the connections to the modem it will
be the start of protecting it but...
ANYONE who will access your modem, meaning he has to break into the "server:
first and from it access the modem, can control it and one of the basic
things he can do is make it unusable

using RH7 with kernel 2.2.16, the NIC driver is built into it.gonna
upgrade to 2.4 soon but still, does anyone know how I can solve this
problem??

Hi.
I have personally used pmfirewall and the results are good.
But to give you a good advise, just study the IPCHAINS and build your own
configuration including only those rules you need.
I admit PMFirewall added the lowest number of "junk" rules but when i built
my own config it was the stronge
BezeqInt has probably the best network traffic statistics in Israel when it
comes to ISDN.
Don't u all forget that ISDN lines, like modem lines are not your lines
only, A lot of ppl use the same line or should I say the same bandwidth as u
do...that is why the speeds change from time to time.
But

Hmmm, where do u want to begin ?
For starters just check your NIC.
It could be the source to all...and yet u could be facing a very long
problem here in configuring the machine.
