You should mount /dev/sdd1 /mnt.
Oh, man. I'm sorry. Can you tell I've been spending too long on this
and my brain is fried?
OK, Pro-9 works fine then.
Much gracious thanks to Stephen for the hints and encouragement to get
me this far.
The Viking is a loaner anyway, so I'm not too concerned
Here's the Viking usb/devices dump again...

Hi, folks. I've got two USB CF readers here, and I can't get either one
of them to be recognized by the kernel. One is an Atech Pro-9, and the
other is a Viking Intelliflash. Kernel is 2.4.21 with all the usb-storage
options turned on. Syslog dump of attaching each in turn is attached
the usb-storage module is doing. I was
at a meeting where we had no network connect but people had brought their
talks on USB dongly type devices. 4 our of 4 random devices worked fine.

The contents of /proc/bus/usb/devices would be more useful.
I'd love to include it, but it doesn't seem to exist
devastator cat /proc/bus/usb/devices
cat: /proc/bus/usb/devices: No such file or directory
