Yep. Knoppix runs directly off the CD, its known as a Live CD. You don't need to have a working (or any) linux on the system that you demo it on. You can download it from ftp://debian.co.nz/isos/Knoppix/ if you have a CDR and want to have a look at it. Also, it might be interested to read the

Debian Kernel Image

Hi, I have just installed Debian woody. So far it is working well. I booted from the boot floppies with the compact kernel, then installed from the Internet. Now when I try to setup my sound card, the modules aren't there. Can someone tell me how I go about installing all the extra modules?

what's the name of the module? have you checked whether it's in /lib/modules/* ? I did a quick search on http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages (box near the bottom of the page) for sb.o for example, and it appears to be in kernel-image-2.2.20 ... maybe when you install this it installs a new
