As there doesn't seem to be a system tool which can install a boot
loader on red Hat (which sucks), it was a question of getting the grub
command right. I don't think the grub docs are entirely correct, or if
so, they're inadequate from my point of view, but this did the trick:
grub --device-map
a system.map or device-map, don't even know what
they are!
As you say, you need the right entries in (hd0,0)/boot/grub/grub.conf,
but thats not too bad.

on whether the boot loader
goes to MBR or elsewhere (my raid1 system seems to have it on /boot, not
in the MBR).
never actually needed a system.map or device-map, don't even know what

Mapping between /dev/X and grub's hdX number scheme (gee I love it - why
not add one more layer of complexity
I'm pretty sure rh9 was delivered with lilo, as grub hadn't been invented then.
There should be a lilo rpm somewhere on the install disks.

SuSE puts a
setup --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 (hd0,4) (hd0,4)
quit
into /etc/grub.conf, so re-installation simply goes with
grub --batch /etc/grub.conf

Hi People
A few weeks ago I reinstalled windows 98 and in the process it overwrote
the bootloader (LILO I think it had a fancy border and nice colours,
shades of blue and purple).
Is there any way for me to get the bootloader reinstalled so I can boot
into linux.
I do not have a boot
Do you still have your install CDs?
Repair can be effected by booting from disk #1

Do what you did before, and once you've got started, press ctrl-alt-f3
and you should get to a console prompt ( if not, try

Hi,
Dual booting with mandrake 9.2 and some other OS. I have the graphical
lilo boot loader selected, yet am presented with an operating system
selection screen which displays linux, windows, failsafe etc as a couple
of lines of text, and the only thing I can do is manually type the
option I
A bit more info that may be relevant: which ever os I type and launch,
the process triggers the bios virus protection routine, (and I could
turn it off) but I can continue.

The Bios routines are a nuisance, as you should have turned it off
before you install Linux in the
BIOS based anti-virus-type-activity features only made sense
when the OS was just a binary executable loader (ie DOS).
Any OS that does more than just load binary executables will
want to do things that will be hampered by that BIOS
feature. Turn it off.
