I recently bought a Wigmore Hall Live CD of a 2013 concert by
countertenor Iestyn Davies and lutenist Thomas Dunford. It included
the world premiere performance of a substantial piece by Nico Muhly
called Old Bones. Up to now, I'd never heard of it, which surprised
Bass line B flat to F natural in version 1 seems more apposite than B
flat to F sharp in version 2, so I would vote for no change.

I'm just listening to the CD samples now on that site. Yes, it is an
extraordinary sound, almost like metal strings. And, of course, very
reverberant. Actually, I'm getting used to it.
I have to assume that an artist of O'Dette's stature and experience has
close hands-on control
I do that too, using a short strap connected to the button on the body
by the bridge. And a footstool. It's an absolute liberation: no more
weight on the shoulders.

Guitarists can read tablature, so it doesn't seem worth making a
transcription into staff notation for them. For anyone else, I would

I've been bothered by the charge of dilettantism (someone who prefers
diversity to virtuosity) which was raised on this list recently. How
many different instruments is it possible to play to a high
professional standard? One? Two? And how many do most lutenists try
to play?
Surely *any* ornament on that first chord is going to give a ninth.
