David,
I currently use Aquila loaded basses on my 6 course Frei (62 cm) for courses 6
and 5. I've used them for quite a few months now and they work perfectly well,
stay in tune with a very ice tone color.
Best,
Jean-Marie

I agree. I also teach the same exercise. One should play with as little
tension as possible, as opposed to use of strength.

Any suggestions? There's a Hamburg-Rebekka-II-08.mp3

Fantastic! Thank you. I too have a daughter (11 years old) - but watch
out, she's a flautist!
By the way, I love your singing and playing the lute at the same time -
I'm always so tempted by those bass lines myself
Best wishes,

Thanks Matthias the link worked perfectly and the performance is

Like Alan, my daughter is in her thirties, but it takes me back.
However, at about nine her voice was more suited to the country
blues, Memphis Minnie style. I did occasionally accompany her.

Very cool. And historical! There are literally thousands of paintings

No they are not mine, but someone sent me the photos. I was a little
scared at the idea of fitting them, and also the non-historic
appearence.
Very moving,

If you are in the situation I was when beginning to play again, it
is more a question of getting your hands back into a supple enough
state to be able to do lute exercises.

In my experience, students tend to use ten times the amount of pressure and
energy than required, so when I see talk of finger strengtheners I get
worried. The great classical guitarist, David Russell, taught me an
invaluable lesson in this regard. Put your left hand index finger on any

Yes I knew I would receive this message. That is why I have never
mentioned it before; but I was careful to say it has nothing to do
with strength, but everything to do with suppleness, and control. It
seems to make the joints more flexible. I have naturally very
unsupple fingers,
Thanks to Rob David for saying it so clearly - I agree absolutely.
Two more related things:
1. It's easy to forget about the LH thumb, where it is, how much
tension it has in it - but it's very important.
2. You could think of the stopping hand as being irrelevant to the

Excellent advice, David. Paul Galbraith told me to feel different surfaces
gently with my fingertips - clothes, tables, guitar (lute) case - before
plucking the string. It awakens the fingers to the subtleties of touch.

Interesting your finger tips feed-back idea. It is often said that
