Ambassador Cobham was charged with trying to arrange the marriage
between Elizabeth and the Duke of Anjou, and he reported regularly in
writing to Walsingham. His reports to Walsingham about this matter (and
many other things too of course) can be found in the Calendat of

I remember reading somewhere (I can't remember where) that the lay-out
of the First Booke of Songes is remarkably similar to, not to say

Many of the pieces in the Paston lute books are intabulations of
polyphonic pieces (motets, movements from masses, madrigals,
fantasias), with the superius part left out. The superius part can of
course be played on recorder.

Apart from only minor differences, the two versions do indeed appear to
be identical. I would however disagree with you on the matter of the
hands. Apart from the rhythmic notation ('grids' on 34r, single flags
on 35v), the writing seems to be identical. Notice

longest single piece that I know is a ricercar in the Siena lute book.
