[LUTE] Re: My Lady Careys Dompe
Hi all, A while ago I decided to dig into the possibility that dumps (doompes or thumpes...) might have a connection with a certain style of playing on the harp. This was my starting point and while I admit I did not really get anywhere specific, the journey itself proved somewhat enjoyable, with forays into Anglo-Irish 19th century politics and a discovery of some really weird instruments with exotic sounding name like the crwth and tiompan. This also started from a transcription of an absolutely remarkable piece in the Marsh lute book, Arthur's dump, a piece of considerable virtuosity with a remarkable rhythmic pattern at its core quite unlike any other piece for lute I think, including pieces titled "dumps". Nothing is known about the origins of the Marsh lute book and its acquisition by the archbishop and its current location in Dublin provides no proof of its origins. A lot of its duet contents seems to also be found in the Cambridge Dd-3-18 MS, many by John Johnson. Although I would not conclude anything overly precise or worth a $20 bet on it, I now tend to think of the dump as the British equivalent of the brande or branle, i.e. a dance that could be both gay or sad, in duple or triple meter, but distinguished by a particular move of the body - for the branle, that was a sideways motion of the body, for the dump maybe a "thump" of the foot on the ground following a signature syncopation in the music. But honestly, we don't know that much about that genre and the evidence I could find is shaky and quite often politically motivated. Which made that little research quite enjoyable to me. Was the dump's fall out of favor at roughly the same time as Elizabeth's edict against wandering harpists a mere coincidence? Could be. Or not. If you are interested in this topic, feel free to check my page on Arthur's dump at [1]http://fandango.musickshandmade.com/collections/preview/2 and the details of my (non)findings at [2]http://fandango.musickshandmade.com/files/collection/zip_file/2/Arth urTheory.html. I provide plenty of links for those who have time to spend on a long winter afternoon. Sadly perhaps, the only real evidence of musical interbreeding between lute and harp comes from Spain, with Mudarra's Fantasia que Contrahaze La Harpa en la Manera de Ludovico, also a technically very strongly typed piece. No idea, really. Lady Carey married Hunsdon, but if it is the same lady, heaven knows. I've got the feeling that dumps belong to an earlier age, more first than 4th quarter of 16th c. But the treble in this one is rather sophisticated. [cleardot.gif] G. It is in the music supplement of Lute News No. 44 (December 1997) which I have miraculously found in a cardboard box if you want a copy. I should have added that he has transposed the piece down a tone to use open bass strings for the ground. > On Feb 22, 2017, at 5:05, sterling price> wrote: > >Hi all-- > I am looking for My Lady Careys Dompe as played by Paul O'Dette on the > Royal Lewters cd. O'Dette's version follows seems to be taken from the harpsichord version to be found in the British Library Royal Appendix MS 58 (f.44v).. As well as being published in the HAM Arthur referred to, it can be found in MB LXVI (Tudor Keyboard Music 1520-1580). I can send you a scan of the latter if you wish. I don't think you need to intabulate, the two-bar bass pattern is always the same and the rest is divisions (with an alto voice a minor third below added across a single bar). Aurthur-- Thanks for that info. I had seen the harpsichord version on Scribd, but no lute version there. O'dette's version is for 6 course lute and seems wonderfully complicated so I am hoping someone has it.
