$TEXMF/tex/latex/base/latex.ltx in the preamble of your document.

why you don't just put ( reference-box ) (remove quote).
like in multiple citation, e.g.
(\citeauthor{bla85}, \citeyear{bla85},

I use the Prettyref option and that puts in the parantheses around the
eqn. number when you reference an equation.. if you click on the
reference inset, in Format, hit Formatted
