they are very serious about targeting Maemo. OTOH! I understand their
reasons for not going for GStreamer since this will require a huge
amount of work and also throwing off a huge amount of investment both
MPlayer and VLC have put into their own stacks.

been quite some time since i last i wrote any device
drivers. Anyway, if it's possible then you wont need to write any
kernel-space code, let alone need to look into the n800 v4l2 driver's
source.

community. IMHO, you should first write a non-DSP version of your
plugin and after you are done with that, you can convert the main-code
to a DSP task and have your plugins communicate with your DSP task via
the dspgateway utils.
