[MARMAM] New papers on marine mammals in Suriname, South America

2015-10-08 Thread info
Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce the following papers recently published on marine
mammals in Suriname (South America).

De Boer MN (2015).Cetaceans observed off Suriname and adjacent waters.
Latin American Journal of Aquatic Mammals, 10(1):
2-19.DOI:
en
De Boer MN, Willems T (2015).Observation of a humpback whale Megaptera
noviaeangliae with calf in the shallow coastal waters off Suriname. Academic
Journal of Suriname, 6: 492-497.
Abstract - Cetaceans observed off Suriname and adjacent waters

Very little information exists about the cetaceans in the Guianas: Suriname and
its neighboring countries Guyana and French Guiana. During a dedicated cetacean
survey carried out from a geophysical seismic survey vessel in the offshore
waters of Suriname (May-September 2012), the occurrence of 13 cetacean species
was documented and of those, 11 were newly documented for this area. The
species observed by the author included sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus),
Bryde’s whale (Balaenoptera edeni), false killer whale (Pseudorca crassidens),
melon-headed whale (Peponocephala electra), rough-toothed dolphin (Steno
bredanensis), long-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus capensis), Fraser’s dolphin
(Lagenodelphis hosei), pantropical spotted dolphin (Stenella attenuata) and
spinner dolphin (Stenella longirostris). During transit to the survey area
(Trinidad to Suriname) incidental sightings were recorded which included common
bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) off Trinidad, Stenellasp. off Guyana
and Guiana dolphin (Sotalia guianensis) at the entrance of the Suriname River.
Opportunistic records originating from the periods December 2008-March 2009 and
August-October 2012 were forwarded to the author. These records included common
bottlenose dolphin, Atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis) and
short-finned pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus). There is a growing need
to identify critical areas for marine biodiversity conservation, both locally
and regionally. This paper describes the general occurrence of the cetacean
community encountered in Suriname waters in summer. The study revealed that the
offshore cetacean community in Suriname is best described as primarily a
tropical community, dominated by odontocetes (dolphins and sperm whales).
Although the species diversity was relatively high, the overall cetacean
relative abundance index (number of animals per100km effort) was low, which is
consistent for tropical equatorial offshore waters. Apart from the sperm whale
and the Guiana dolphin, all the other species recorded represent new species
records for Suriname. It is recommended that more continuous monitoring in
different seasons be carried out in order to gain a better understanding of the
occurrence, distribution and status of the different cetacean species within
the region.

Abstract -Observation of a humpback whale Megaptera noviaeangliae with calf in
the shallow coastal waters off Suriname.

A large whale, accompanied by a calf, was seen in the shallow coastal waters
off Suriname on 20 April 2013. Digital images confirmed the species
identification as humpback whale Megaptera novaeangliae. This is the first
confirmed record of humpback whales in Suriname. The observation was made at
the extreme southern limit of the North Atlantic population’s distribution and
suggests that the waters along the northern coast of South America may be used
for within-season movements between the different breeding and calving areas of
the Wider Caribbean Region.
The papers can be found here:

[MARMAM] NEW PAPER: Under Pressure: Cetaceans and Fisheries Co-occurrence off Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire

2016-09-24 Thread info
Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce the following paper recently published in Frontiers in
Marine Science (Special Issue: People-Marine mammal interactions)
Under Pressure: Cetaceans and Fisheries Co-occurrence off the Coasts of Ghana
and Côte d’Ivoire (Gulf of Guinea)

De Boer MN, Saulino JT, Van Waerebeek K and Aarts G (2016) Under Pressure:
Cetaceans and Fisheries Co-occurrence off the Coasts of Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire
(Gulf of Guinea). Front. Mar. Sci. 3:178. doi: 10.3389/fmars.2016.00178

Abstract
Within the Gulf of Guinea high levels of fisheries-related cetacean mortality
(bycatch and direct-capture) has been documented. For locally rare species such
removals could potentially lead to significant population level effects.
However, information on the cetacean abundance and distribution is scarce.
Similarly, it remains largely unreported where fishing fleets operate offshore.
A cetacean survey took place during geophysical surveys (2013–2014) along the
coasts of Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire. This provided a unique opportunity to study
both offshore cetacean and fishing communities. Due to large group-sizes,
melon-headed whales were the most abundant (0.34 animals km−1) followed by
Fraser’s dolphins and short-finned pilot whales. Range state records were
confirmed for melon-headed whale and Fraser’s dolphin in Ivoirian waters and
ten further species represented first at-sea sightings. The artisanal fishing
canoe was most abundant (92% of all vessels) and recorded up to 99.5 km from
the Ghanaian coast. Asian trawlers operated over shelf areas and tuna
purse-seine vessels in deep oceanic and slope waters. Fraser’s dolphins,
melon-headed whales, pantropical spotted dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, and
pilot whales were recorded in areas with the highest fishing densities.
Melon-headed whales, pilot whales, and rough-toothed dolphins were observed in
vicinity of trawlers; bottlenose dolphins, pantropical spotted dolphins, and
pilot whales in vicinity of canoes. Some notable differences were found in the
species composition between the present surveys and port-based surveys of
landed cetaceans (bycatch/direct-captures). These may be explained by (1)
feeding strategies (nocturnal vs. diurnal; surface vs. deep water); (2)
different attractions to vessels/fishing gear; (3) variable body sizes; and (4)
difficulty to positively identify species. Despite these differences, both
cetaceans and fishing vessels predominantly occurred in shelf and slope waters
(< 1000m depth contour), making fishery-related mortality likely. The poor
knowledge on population trends of cetaceans in this unique upwelling region,
together with a high demand for cetacean products for human consumption (as
“marine bushmeat”) may lead to a potential decline of some species that may go
unnoticed. These new insights can provide a foundation for the urgently
required risk assessments of cetacean mortality in fisheries within the
northern Gulf of Guinea.

The paper can be downloaded from Frontiers in Marine
Science:

A pdf including the supplements can also be downloaded from my Research Page.

[MARMAM] New Publication: Spatial and Temporal Baseline Information on Marine Megafauna off Cornwall

2018-01-28 Thread info
NEW PAPER:

Spatial and Temporal Baseline Information on Marine Megafauna - Data
Facilitated by a Wildlife Tour Operator

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce the following paper recently published in the Open
Journal of Marine Science

De Boer, MN, Jones, D., Jones, H., Knee R. (2018).Spatial and Temporal Baseline
Information on Marine Megafauna - Data Facilitated by a Wildlife Tour Operator.
Open Journal of Marine Science, 8, 76-113.

Abstract
The protection of marine megafauna within Europe is rather fragmented.
Developing conservation measures for highly mobile species presents definite
challenges, particularly due to the many knowledge gaps. Recent studies have
shown that these gaps can be filled in by Platforms of Opportunity (PO) which
create low-cost approaches. However, the number of wildlife tour operators
actively collecting PO data related to distribution and relative abundance of
marine fauna remains limited. In this study, we investigated whether
effort-corrected data on marine megafauna facilitated by a wildlife tour
operator afforded robust long temporal data (2011-2015). Sightings data,
collected in the wider Mount’s Bay area (southwest Cornwall, UK), along with a
GPS application, were collected to accurately record survey effort. In
addition, radial sighting distances and detection curves were computed to
explore the robustness of the data. Density maps of marine megafauna indicated
that encounters occurred throughout the area in all three seasons but the
temporal distribution was significantly different with numbers peaking in
autumn. Odontocetes were mostly recorded during autumn, basking shark
(Cetorhinus maximus) and ocean sunfish (Mola mola) were more abundant during
summer and leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) were recorded
occasionally. Our data showed that this shallow coastal environment is
particularly important as a nursing area for harbour porpoises (Phocoena
phocoena). Risso’s dolphins (Grampus griseus) showed a high semi-residency
pattern for adults with calves within one core-habitat. As such, the study
provides important spatial and temporal baseline data that are essential for
the protection of marine megafauna through the development of an ecological
network of marine protected areas within UK waters. Although, data facilitated
by wildlife operators have certain shortcomings we highlight that the protocols
developed here secured efficient and precise data. Such collection protocols
can be implemented on a larger scale, ultimately enhancing research monitoring
efforts and marine ecosystem management.

[MARMAM] Moreton Bay Dolphin Research Project Eco-volunteer Opportunities

2018-01-30 Thread info
Dear Marmammers,

Dolphin Research Australia Inc. is a marine research, education and
conservation charity. We are pleased to announce that we have eco-volunteer
opportunities available for participants to join our Moreton Bay Dolphin
Research Expeditions in 2018. We have one or two week eco-volunteer
expeditions available between May and June 2018. The project offers a unique
learning experience for those passionate about dolphins and the marine
environment who want to contribute to increasing knowledge, awareness and
improving conservation efforts while supporting the research efforts.

The research project focuses on Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins and
Australian humpback dolphins and aims to assess and monitor the abundance
and health of these populations in the Moreton Bay Marine Park and South
East Queensland region. Participants have the opportunity to join the
research team and have a hands-on and participatory experience working from
small research vessels whilst being based at the University of Queensland
Moreton Bay Research Station on the beautiful North Stradbroke Island
located near Brisbane, Australia. Participants will assist in collecting
data on the behaviour, acoustics and habitat use of coastal dolphins.

No previous experience is required and all training will be provided to
participants.   Participants, however, do need to have the following;

- An enthusiastic and positive attitude

- Willingness to learn and work with a small team

- General interest in dolphin biology and ecology

- Be able to work long-hours on a small vessel (not susceptible to
chronic sea sickness)

- Ability to communicate fluently in English (both written and
oral)

- Good fitness level (the work requires agility to work on small
vessels and participants will be required to regularly get on and off small
boats, move around the vessel whilst underway and at times in choppy
conditions)

Please check our website www.dolphinresearchaustralia.org

[MARMAM] New paper on bowhead whales

2019-06-09 Thread info
NEW PAPER:Encouraging encounters: unusual aggregations of bowhead whales
Balaena mysticetusin the western Fram Strait

Dear Colleagues, I am pleased to announce the following paper recently
published in Endangered Species Research

De Boer MN, Janinhoff N, Nijs G, Verdaat H (2019) Encouraging encounters:
unusual aggregations of bowhead whales Balaena mysticetus in the western Fram
Strait. Endang Species Res 39:51-62.

Abstract
The subpopulation of the bowhead whale Balaena mysticetusin the East
Greenland-Svalbard-Barents Sea is endangered and until recently was believed to
number in the tens. Recent studies have suggested that this subpopulation
appears to be increasing. Here, we report on unusual aggregations of bowhead
whales within the Fram Strait. We present opportunistic and effort-corrected
observations of bowhead whales made from a small expedition vessel during
cruises in June (2015−2018). Bowhead whales were sighted on 85 occasions
(220−227 whales). An aggregation in 2015 (n = 84 whales) and high numbers in
2018 (n = 104−110) exceeded all previous records. The index of whale abundance
was significantly higher in open water-leads (1.08−1.14 whales km−1 of survey
effort) compared to areas with drift-ice (0.51−0.53 whales km−1). The highest
abundance index was measured in deep waters where the bottom slope was
relatively steep.

Our findings highlight the temporal and spatial consistency of this species in
areas with relatively loose ice cover (open water-leads) and steep slopes. It
is unknown how global warming and resultant changes in ice-extent are going to
affect bowhead whales within the Strait and whether they will find new feeding
grounds due to an expanding open-ocean habitat. These slopes may become
increasingly important to bowhead whales and Arctic top predators as a
spring/early summer feeding ground. These relatively large numbers of bowhead
whales are encouraging and can help direct future research monitoring programs
to study the population ecology of these endangered whales.

[MARMAM] New paper - Numerical Modeling of the Exposure on Radiofrequency Radiation of Marine Mammal Observers During Their Shift: A Case Study

2021-01-14 Thread info desk
Dear MARMAM Members,

My colleagues and I are pleased to share our new publication titled: Numerical
Modeling of the Exposure on Radiofrequency Radiation of Marine Mammal Observers
During Their Shift: A Case Study

Abstract: Following the standard numerical modeling approach for
Electromagnetic Field (EMF) radiation exposure prediction, we intend to provide
an analytical framework to Marine Mammal Observers (MMOs) for dynamic risk
assessment; enhancing thus occupational health and safety awareness. The
analysis is based on power levels and antenna characteristics reported by MMOs
for two systems (VHF and UHF) located close to the working environment. Whilst
occupational exposure limits apply for MMOs, as for the rest crew (seismic and
maritime), evaluation of exposure levels against general public limits is
presented as well. At present we have restricted our study to single-source
radiation, as well as we did not consider any irregularities due to system
malfunction. The worst-case scenario of continuous RF transmission was
considered. Risk assessment indicated regions where radiation exposure is
higher than the permissible limits. Uncertainty due to the operational
environment is inserted in methodology using an uncertainty coefficient. A list

[MARMAM] Research internship 2024- still some spots available

2024-02-07 Thread Info DDP
DELFINI DEL PONENTE ASSOCIATION, IMPERIA, ITALY

Cetaceans and Marine Fauna research project - last spots available

Delfini del Ponente is currently looking for and accepting interns to join
our research project on bottlenose dolphins and other marine fauna in the
Western Ligurian Sea, Imperia (Italy) We still have a few spots available
for this year.

The project

The research project “Delfini del Ponente”, started in 2018, is the first
project focused on monitoring bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus)
occurrence and distribution in the Western Ligurian Sea. The project is
structured on an annual basis, to obtain data year-round. The study has
already provided exciting information about this community inside the study
area - its social organisation, abundance of individuals, distribution, and
movements also outside the region. Our dataset includes records on several
cetaceans species and also on other marine fauna such as seabirds -
Mediterranean shearwaters (Puffinus yelkouan), Scopoli’s shearwaters
(Calonectris
diomedea), Northern gannets (Morus bassanus), Sandwich terns (Thalasseus
sandvicensis) and more - sea turtles (Caretta caretta) and sunfish (Mola
mola), among others.

Surveys are carried out in coastal waters onboard a dedicated zodiac (6 m
inflatable boat) around 10 times per month. Training will focus on
recording data on marine fauna, collecting photos for photo-ID purposes,
environmental, marine traffic, geographical (GPS) and dolphins' behavioural
data. Land-based surveys take place in Imperia, in 2 different locations to
collect data on the presence/absence of dolphins, fishing boats in activity
and marine birds. Fieldwork is a great opportunity to get involved and
improve skills in cetaceans and marine biodiversity research. *Land-based
and zodiac surveys are weather-dependent, and their number can change
monthly*.

Office work (6 hours per day) includes training and lessons for the interns
and supervision of all the activities (photo-id work, data transcription,
data entry, skin lesion analysis, QGIS work, etc...)
