To be fair, I very much doubt Amy Goodman knew anything about Zaya's
background. I also unknowingly quoted him in some discussion, though only
on a purely factual matter. If you look at this wikipedia page on him,
there is nothing about nazi connections, in fact his work looks rather
impressive:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred-Maurice_de_Zayas?fbclid=IwAR2Cbu8DNIEWnBFNcoUUmIHBy_u5IGNlggnkxC8B7nOV_5jMui1k6uXSris
The link, I think, is that he did genuine research on the mass expulsion of
the German population from eastern Europe and the Balkans in 1945, one of
the world's largest ever forced population movements, some 13 million
German civilians uprooted, who form some 20% of today's population of
Germany. This valid work is what seems to have attracted the attention of
the German far-right, but unfortunately there is now overwhelming evidence
that Zayas himself has right-wing and anti-Semitic ideas.
Just on Amith's comment:

I agree there is nothing problematic about half the quotes, it is the other
half that are the problem ("George W. Bush and Tony Blair too are
Pharisees."!) Weinberg himself is anti-Zionist so his inclusion of this bit
is confusing, likewise his point about the US destabilising the middle
east, but further down he seems to be saying that, yes, some of these
points are valid, but he put them next to the bad ones in order to put them
in context, ie, a far rightist can appear anti-imperialist and anti-Zionist
when taken out of context. He says for example yes the US destrabilised
Iraq, but not Syria. On the Israel bit, he says "this (ie, the anti-Semitic
stuff) taints whatever points he may have about the origins of Israel
(although it is hardly the only state to have "emerged out of terrorism
against the indigenous population").
Admittedly, at first sight, the list does seem a bit of a shocker though,
and he could have avoided that if he's done it better.

This is Bill Weinberg's website. I've been forced to unfriend twice on
FB. The first time it was over his really obnoxious attacks on Jill
Stein during the 2016 election. He made voting for Hillary Clinton a
litmus test for the left.

About a year ago I decided to send him a friend request after the
bitterness over the elections died down. A few days after the Yellow
Vest movement began making news, he began making an amalgam between them
and Marine Le Pen. Interestingly enough, the only other FB friend who
took this tack was Daniel Lazare, who is infamous for his pro-Assad
drivel. Hmm. I wonder how these two birdbrains could oppose each other
so vehemently on Syria can agree on the Yellow Vests.

but that some GJ forces are calling to extend it as in the Assemblies
statement.

" But the assembled quotes from de Zayas do point up how an unprincipled
anti-Americanism can lead to extremely problematic territory. To wit:
...
• "Israel emerged out of terrorism against the indigenous population" and
its representatives should be denied U.N. accreditation. Source
"

So to criticize leftists at DN for bringing on a right-wing mouthpiece like
de Zayas, you guys cite a leftist blog (CounterVortex) that cites
right-wing mouthpieces and Zionist war propaganda (like UN Watch)?

There is nothing "problematic" about half of those quotes. The Old
Testament, like most ancient religious literature, is a barbaric book.
Nuremburg was an exercise in victor's justice, which is why subsequent
international criminal tribunals tried to make serious structural changes
to the process, including standardizing (or attempting to standardize)
international criminal law. The Allies did commit horrific wartime
atrocities, just as the Axis powers did, even if genocide wasn't one of
them. And Israel is unambiguously a regime that emerged out of terrorism
against the indigenous population. And even as the piece notes that UN
Watch is "pro-Western" (which is misleading, unless by "Western" you mean
"Israel"), it still depends on UN Watch for half of the material and even
repeats Israeli propaganda. It is also worth noting how the implicit
suggestion is that being "pro-Western" or pro-Israel and attempting to
discredit human rights agencies that monitor Israeli abuses -- which are
happening in real time -- does not qualify as racism or right-wing activism
(at least, not enough to stop quoting them), while this man's affiliations
with groups that downplay atrocities that happened historically do.

That de Zayas is apparently a German fascist or has fascist supporters is
being used by this blog as a launching point to assail not only Democracy
Now but a series of totally valid and fundamentally left-wing political
causes including anti-Zionism and anti-imperialism. It smells like an
Anti-Deutsch blog.

And it is transparent they aren't just going at DN for the mistake of
hosting a fake expert with Nazi ties (which is a reasonable criticism), but
actually substantively opposed to opposition to imperialism and Zionism (or
at least, totally clueless about both things) and they are using this man's
appearance to give it the veneer of being principled leftists.

Amy Goodman has put on her show one Alfred de Zayas, a supposed "former UN
expert" on human rights. He was put on to discuss Venezuela. As the article
reveals, de Zayas is a supporter of the AfD in Germany. He only "opposes"
US imperialism because he supports Putin and Russian imperialism. We see,
once again, how all these radical lefts, or in the case of Goodman a left
liberal, are fodder for the red-brown alliance because they completely miss
the main point: The class conflict.

(From David McDonald on FB)

PLEASE READ AND CIRCULATE -- IMPORTANT GILETS JAUNES INFO

Note by David:

Many many have wondered about the politics of the Gilets Jaunes because
their protests have been so elemental and hostile to the existing
political forces. Some, like Kester Ratcliff, have decided the GJ are
unalterably right-wing in nature, but he's not the only one.

Below, my Parisian correspondent summarizes and translates various
portions of the statement issued by the first Assembly of the Assemblies
in Commercy that ought to lay such fears to rest and inspire admiration
and solidarity for the Gilets Jaunes. Do note that this (so far) most
authoritative communication from the assembled GJ calls for a general
strike on February 5.

Last weekend more than 350 delegates came to the first
Assembly of the Assemblies taking place in Commercy (Lorraine). They
represented 75 assemblies from across the country.

[The Assembly adopted on Sunday a text to present to local assemblies
for discussion and adoption.

I translated some excerpts: -- my correspondent talking]

We, Gilets Jaunes from traffic circles, parking lots, town squares,
assemblies, protests, we gathered on the 26 and 27 of January 2019 ...

Since November 17, from the smallest village in rural areas to the
biggest city, we rose up against this most violent, unjust and
unbearable society... [We want] for our families and children to live in
dignity. 26 billionaires own as much as half of mankind, we can't accept
that... End social inequality! We demand the immediate raise of wages,
minimum social incomes, pensions..., the unconditional right to housing
and health care, education, free public services for all. It's for these
rights that ... we organize these actions, protests ... With our yellow
vests we reclaim our right to be heard, we who are never heard. ... the
government's response? Repression, contempt, vilifying us... A few died
and thousands where injured, weapons were massively used at close
range... More than 1,000 were convicted and are in jail. And now this
so-called anti-casseur law*, whose real aim is to deny us the right to
protest... To protest is a fundamental right. End the impunity of the
police forces!

Amnesty for all the repression victims! And what a sham this 'great
debate' ... The real democracy, we are practicing it in our assemblies,
our traffic circles...

The demands and strategic proposals most discussed [in local assemblies]
include: eradication of poverty in all its manifestations;
transformation of the institutions (RIC, Constituent Assembly; end the
privileges of those elected [MPs, senators, ...]); environmental
transition; equal rights for all, whatever their nationality, whether
valid or handicapped, man/woman; end the abandonment of 'quartiers
populaires' [working-class ghettos], rural areas and the overseas
departments and territories [Martinique, Guadeloupe, Reunion ...]

We call to pursue the Acts [Saturday protests] (Act XII against police
brutality outside police stations, Act XIII, XIV, ...), continue
occupying traffic circles, block the economy, build a massive renewable
strike, starting February 5.

Form committees in workplaces, schools, and elsewhere so that this
strike can be built at the grassroots level by the strikers
themselves... Don't stay isolated, join us! We propose to all the Gilets
Jaunes to circulate this resolution.
If you---as a group of gilets jaunes---approve it, send your signature
to Commercy. Don't hesitate to discuss and express proposals for the
future assembly of the assemblies, that we are already preparing.

Note [by my correspondent]
* casseur: literally the one who smash [windows]---refers to those who
smash stores/banks windows, ...
Under this (newly adopted by the Parliament) law anyone deemed a
'casseur' by the authorities can be banned from demonstrations. The
government also plans on intensifying searches, criminalizing
protesters, ... Marine Le Pen, who likes to portray herself as a
supporter of the Gilets Jaunes, immediately announced that she would
vote for the law.

NY Times, Jan. 29, 2019
Use of Force in France’s ‘Yellow Vest’ Protests Fuels Anger
By Elian Peltier

PARIS — As he joined a “Yellow Vest” protest in Bordeaux, in
southwestern France, Jean-Marc Michaud felt elated. His wife worked
nearby and they had not seen each other in a month, so the march was a
perfect opportunity to reunite.

Instead, his life took a serious turn for the worse at the protest in
early December, when a rubber projectile fired by the police destroyed
his right eye. Mr. Michaud, 41, who lives on France’s western coast, now
joins demonstrations to protest both economic distress and police violence.

“The government claims that we are looters and violent protesters, but
so many of us are just peaceful civilians,” said Mr. Michaud, a
horticulturist who now wears an eye patch and says his arms were raised
when he was shot. “The government isn’t listening to us, and now they
are trying to silence us with repression in the streets.”

Anger at officers’ use of force has helped fuel the nationwide Yellow
Vest movement that began as protests against a fuel tax increase and
that has grown into a broader revolt against President Emmanuel Macron’s
government.

There has been particular outrage at serious injuries caused by rubber
balls, about the size of golf balls, that the police fire at
demonstrators with specially made guns — wounds that have made headlines
for weeks. Among Western European countries, experts say, only France
and Northern Ireland use such tools.

The latest controversy erupted on Saturday, when Jérôme Rodrigues, a
well-known figure in the movement, suffered an eye injury as he was
streaming live video on Facebook of a protest in Paris. Before he was
hit, he warned that hard-left agitators were fomenting violence, and
advised demonstrators to disperse.

Mr. Rodrigues and his lawyer said he had been hit by both a rubber ball
and a “dispersal grenade,” which explodes and sprays smaller rubber pellets.

“He will be handicapped for life,” the lawyer, Philippe de Veulle, told
BFMTV. “It is a tragedy for him and his family.”

Since violent clashes began in November, 11 people have died, and 1,900
protesters and 1,200 law enforcement officers have been injured,
according to the Interior Ministry. Independent counts by the newspaper
Libération and the journalist David Dufresne say that 109 protesters
have been seriously injured, including 18 who have become blind in one
eye and four who have lost a hand.

“We weren’t afraid of the police, but this has changed,” said Fiorina
Lignier, a 20-year-old philosophy student who lost an eye at a Yellow
Vest protest in Paris on Dec. 8. “They are more offensive, more
repressive, blind in their actions.”

A rubber ball “rips the skin apart and can fracture the bones, as if
someone had been violently hit with a truncheon,” said Chloé Bertolus, a
facial surgeon at the Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital in Paris, who said she
and her team had operated on at least 16 wounded protesters.

Christian Mouhanna, a sociologist at the National Center for Scientific
Research, said the use of force had profound implications for opinions
of the police, whose harshest tactics were applied in minority
communities and to people on the political fringes.

“Through the Yellow Vests protests, many working or middle-class French,
usually calm and mostly white, have discovered that in France, police
violence can also target them,” he said. “The police have become the
symbol of the government’s refusal to negotiate.”

The police have faced extraordinary challenges in containing the Yellow
Vests. Demonstrations often are not announced in advance, and they
attract people who loot, set fires and attack security officers while
staying close to peaceful protesters, making it hard to pick them out.

But Mr. Macron’s political opponents and rights groups have denounced
the police response, especially the rubber projectile guns, as
disproportionate. The government has disregarded a call by the country’s
ombudsman to stop using them.

Interior Minister Christophe Castaner disputed at first the notion that
the police had used violence, and he later argued that without
projectile launchers, security forces would have to use lethal weapons.

“Let’s be clear, we’ve never seen such a level of violence,” said
Stanislas Gaudon, a representative for the union Alliance Police
Nationale. “Some protesters have wanted to hurt police forces in a very
worrying way.”

Those forces, already stretched by terrorist threats, are facing
exhaustion, he added. Of the 60 riot police companies nationwide, 50
have been

A comradely critique of an autonomist
Colin Barker (January 2019)
In 2013, in the journal ROAR, Jerome Roos set out a rich and in many ways
attractive
case for the politics of ‘autonomy’.1 Finding myself at odds with his line of
argument, I spent
some time during 2014 developing some critical notes. Rather late in the day, I
now offer
these notes for wider discussion. In no way should these notes be treated as an
ad hominem
critique. Jerome has informed me that his own views have evolved over the past
half-decade,
the true sign of a creative thinker. I hope the matter of the arguments matters
more than who
utters them and when.

NY Times, Jan. 29, 2019
Charter Schools Suffer Setback in Aftermath of Los Angeles Strike
By Jennifer Medina and Dana Goldstein

LOS ANGELES — Carrying protest signs, thousands of teachers and their
allies converged last month on the shimmering contemporary art museum in
the heart of downtown Los Angeles. Clad in red, they denounced
“billionaire privatizers” and the museum’s patron, Eli Broad. The march
was a preview of the attacks the union would unleash during the
teachers’ strike, which ended last week.

As one of the biggest backers of charter schools, Mr. Broad helped make
them a fashionable and potent cause in Los Angeles, drawing support from
business leaders like Reed Hastings, the co-founder of Netflix;
Hollywood executives; and lawmakers to create a wide network of more
than 220 schools.

Mr. Broad was so bullish about the future of charter schools just a few
years ago that he even floated a plan to move roughly half of Los
Angeles schoolchildren — more than 250,000 students — into such schools.
In 2017, he funneled millions of dollars to successfully elect
candidates for the Board of Education who would back charters, an
alternative to traditional public schools that are publicly funded but
privately run.

His prominence has also turned him into a villain in the eyes of the
teachers’ union. Now Mr. Broad and supporters like him are back on their
heels in Los Angeles and across the country. The strike is the latest
setback for the charter school movement, which once drew the endorsement
of prominent Democrats and Republicans alike. But partly in reaction to
the Trump administration, vocal Democratic support for charters has
waned as the party has shifted further to the left and is more likely to
deplore such schools as a drain on traditional public schools.

When the Los Angeles mayor, Eric Garcetti, announced a deal between the
teachers’ union and the school district after the weeklong strike, it
became immediately clear that the fate of charter schools was part of
the bargain: The union extracted a promise that the pro-charter school
Board of Education would vote on a call for the state to cap the number
of charters.

It was the latest in a string of defeats for a movement that for over a
decade has pointed to Los Angeles and California as showcases for the
large-scale growth of the charter school sector.

Backers of charter schools argue that they provide a much-needed choice
for parents in poor neighborhoods, where low-performing schools are
often the norm. Many supporters expressed frustration that student
achievement had not been a focus of the debate around the Los Angeles
strike. Overall, the city’s public school students tend to perform worse
in reading and math than their counterparts in many other large urban
school districts across the country, according to the National
Assessment of Educational Progress. The low performance of district
schools, charter supporters say, has led to about a fifth of the
district’s students being enrolled in charter schools.

“Why would they dive in to make this political statement?” said Myrna
Castrejón, the president of the California Charter Schools Association.
Addressing the teachers’ union, she said: “Do you hate us that much that
you would bargain away the future of poor children and Latino children
for this?”

Charter schools, which are generally not unionized, were not officially
on the bargaining table in the protracted negotiations between the union
and the district. It is the state, not the school district, that crafts
the laws governing charter schools and their growth. But it was always a
central message of the union during the strike: Charter schools, they
argued, were taking students and money away from traditional public schools.

Still, charter schools have proven popular among many parents in Los
Angeles. Some schools have long waiting lists and the district already
has more students enrolled in charters than any other public school
system in the country.

It is still unclear how much practical impact the deal will have on
charters. Charter school supporters are lobbying the school board, which
has steadfastly supported charters for more than a decade, to vote down
the resolution for a charter school cap this week. Even if it passes,
advocates are certain to take the fight to Sacramento, where a bill
calling for a moratorium seems likely. They will argue that charters
have given poor students and students of color essential options for
better schools.

But the defeat in the court of public opinion is clear: After years of
support from powerful local

[Marxism] Declassified Documents Show Moscow’s Fear of an Afghan Flip, U.S. Diplomat’s Meeting with Afghan Leader Helped Put Soviets Over the Edge

President Trump’s claim that the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in 1979
to get rid of terrorists who were coming over the border is false,
according to declassified U.S. and Soviet documents posted today by the
National Security Archive at George Washington University.

Just as false, according to the documents, were the repeated U.S. media
assertions at the time, driven by President Carter’s national security
adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski, that the Soviet motivation was “the age-long
dream of Moscow to have direct access to the Indian Ocean” (Document 8).

Soviet Politburo documents that first became available in the 1990s show
the real Soviet fear was that the head of the Afghan Communist regime,
Hafizullah Amin, was about to go over to the Americans. (Egyptian
president Anwar Sadat famously flipped in 1972, ejected thousands of Soviet
advisers, and became the second largest recipient, after Israel, of U.S.
foreign aid.)

Two October 1979 events in particular set off Moscow’s alarms, according to
the documents and subsequent analyses by Afghan veteran Gen. Alexander
Lyakhovsky and senior Soviet diplomat Georgy Kornienko: Amin’s murder of
his predecessor Taraki on October 8, and Amin’s reception of acting
American Chargé d’Affaires Archer Blood on October 27.

None of the Soviet documents list terrorists going into the USSR as a
concern in 1979. The Soviet worry was the incompetence and worse of their
Afghan Communist clients, the declining Soviet influence (much less
control) in the country, and the possibility of Afghanistan going over to
the Americans.

This contradicts the claim of President Carter's national security adviser
Zbigniew Brzezinski -

“It should by now be generally accepted that the Soviet invasion of
Afghanistan on Christmas Eve 1979 was deliberately provoked by the United
States. In his memoir published in 1996, the former CIA director Robert
Gates made it clear that the American intelligence services began to aid
the mujahidin guerrillas not after the Soviet invasion, but six months
before it. In an interview two years later with *Le Nouvel Observateur*,
President Carter's national security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski proudly
confirmed Gates' assertion. "According to the official version of history,"
Brzezinski said, "CIA aid to the mujahidin began during 1980, that's to
say, after the Soviet army invaded Afghanistan. But the reality, kept
secret until now, is completely different: on 3 July 1979 President Carter
signed the first directive for secret aid to the opponents of the
pro-Soviet regime in Kabul. And on the same day, I wrote a note to the
president in which I explained that in my opinion this aid would lead to a
Soviet military intervention."

Asked whether he in any way regretted these actions, Brzezinski replied:
"Regret what? The secret operation was an excellent idea. It drew the
Russians into the Afghan trap and you want me to regret it? On the day that
the Soviets officially crossed the border, I wrote to President Carter,
saying, in essence: 'We now have the opportunity of giving to the USSR its
Vietnam War.'"

Most Canadians think of their country as a force for good in the world, but
recent efforts by Justin Trudeau’s government to overthrow Venezuela’s elected
government have once again revealed the ugly truth about the Great White North.
We are an important partner in imperialism, willing to interfere in the
internal affairs of other countries, up to and including the use of military
force, to benefit the perceived self-interest of our elites.
