The mechanical FI is fine so long as it works -- once fiddled with, very very expensive to repair (pumps out of production for a very long time now). The rest of the engine is standard MB fare -- taken care of, very reliable. Rather breathless, revs WAY up there (6600 rpm at 118 mph).

The kingpins have less than a half thousandth clearance. Install and adjust them correctly and keep them properly lubricated and they will go 100,000 miles. Don't do this and they will always be trouble. The IP is a great piece of hardware. But there is one adjustment accessable to the outside

IMO, the 6 cyl is the only way to go. The V8 was in it;s early stages of development - the 4.5 was being prepped for the 450SE/SEL/SL Sedan/Conv. So the Germans put it in some of the last production of the W108 sedans to get more real world mileage. There was an interim 3.5 engine tested

Actually, GM Ford and Chrysler used a similar system up to the mid 90's -- anything with a MAP sensor is essentially D-Jet. Not the best mixture control, by far, but hardly just a carb replacement. You can adjust the base mixture at the MAP sensor, by the way, but you really need a CO meter
