[meteorite-list] Park Forest Strewn Field

2003-07-25 Thread Mark Jackson
Dear List,

As most of you know, I'm working on a crater-possible area in Southern California. This area, I believe, shows evidence of a complex event characterized by an airbust explosion of a main mass which is "followed in" by what I term as "break up companions"; pieces of the main mass that separated from it PRIOR to the explosion. Any one who has seen the Columbia disaster breakup, or the Peekskill fireball video or any bolide film will recall that such "break up companions" tend to fall behind the main mass as they all continue to push forward along the flight path. This can be for any number of reasons; one can imagine it's a simple matter having to do with the lighter mass vs. atmospheric load of re-entry. Remember going along here that heavier companions will hang closer to the main mass than lighter ones. If one continues to imagine that a main mass and some "break up companions" continue along until suddenly the main mass explodes, then one must consider quite a few
 things:

1.) The main mass will send an explosive shockwave out omnidirectionally from it's centerpoint which is the endpoint of it's velocity vector.

2.) The break up companions following the main mass will meet this shockwave as they travel forward. It's safe to assume, given the effects of gravity and the previously discussed atmospheric loading, that they will meet the shockwave at or below the velocity vector; thus they will be forced down and to both or one side of the velocity vector.

Following these objects to the ground, one can continue to imagine they will fall in an ellipsoid pattern that appears perpendicular to the velocity vector. These objects will fall either to one or both sides (PF all landed to the right or east of the velocity vector); the heavier objects will naturally be closer to the velocity vector (the PF house penetrators) with the lighter pieces further down and away (the Crete impactors).

I suggest then that the Park Forest "reverse strewn field" is suddenly not so reverse after all. It's really a collection of pre-airburst companions spread down and away from the exploding main mass. The main mass was probably vaporized or whatever was left continued on into Lake Michigan.

Kindest Regards,

Mark

Re: [meteorite-list] Park Forest Strewn Field

2003-07-25 Thread Mark Jackson

Sonny List,

So far as I know Sonny, we are struggling to come to terms with this type of strewn field for the first time by hashing it out amongst ourselves. Sterling K. Webb was very close to the mark by pointing to the “pre-airburst breakup companions” but he couldn’t find reason for the extreme NW to SE elongation of the pattern (very good work Sterling!). Some have suggested winds aloft; that is not ruled out at all and should be characterized. I struggle mightily, however, with winds being more than a small factor in the fall pattern of PF. I believe the shockwave has very much more to do with the flattening and elongation of the perpendicular “pre-airburst breakup companion” strewn field; the reason for this is those companions fly right into the shockwave close to it’s peak pressure (right after detonation), and that must affect their flight paths to a large degree.

If it turns out to be accepted, we should call falls like PF “airburst fall fields” because it can only happen when there are companions following into an airburst shockwave. Well, before we do that, there have beena couple ofother strewn fields that match the 90 degree out pattern as pointed out by Ron Baalke and others; I have not read the scientific papers associated with those falls to see what the investigators concluded, so we may be repeating work already done.

To answer some of your other questions, I have no way of telling you what any particular strewn field will look like; they are such dynamic events it would be impossible. There are some basic tenets of physics that will apply however. If you take a line called the velocity vector of the original body and intersect it with the earth, that’s what DoD calls the “straight-line intersection”. In a vacuum, undisturbed by any other forces, the impact point would be right on that point. In a total breakup situation, like Columbia, the heaviest pieces will always be closest to the straight line intersection (the far end of the strewn field). Better put, heaviest objects will always be closest to the velocity vector AND the straight-line intersection because they carry the most kinetic energy and are therefore the hardest objects for outside forces to move off course.

Something else to remember: these are all pre-impact elements we are discussing here; this is WAY different than discussing a post-impact ejecta pattern.

I have found what I suspect to be meteorite fragments at my crater-possible site. Nothing I have found has yet been confirmed to be of impact or meteoritic origin, however. I am not a PhD or anything I just do this stuff because I like it and I have great interest in it.

Finally I don’t know what a “meteorite recovery team” is . . . but I want to sign up!

Kindest Regards,
Mark

[meteorite-list] Vitim Meteorite Was Probably A Comet

2003-07-25 Thread Ron Baalke

http://en.rian.ru/rian/index.cfm?prd_id=160msg_id=3345630startrow=1date=2003-07-25do_alert=0

VITIM METEORITE WAS PROBABLY A COMET
Russian Information Agency Novosti
July 25, 2003

MOSCOW - Russian scientists who have investigated the place where the so-called
Vitim meteorite fell presume that what hit the taiga was a small comet. The
object concerned was a large celestial body with a supposed weight of about 100
tons, which at the end of September of last year fell into the basin of the
Vitim River in Eastern Siberia. Witnesses claim that they saw a glowing object
hurtle through the air and break up into small pieces and then heard a powerful
explosion. A fire started in the place of the fall, within a radius of 3
kilometres. Because these localities are hard to reach, the investigators did
not arrive there until this summer.

Members of the Russian expedition said they failed to discover metal remnants
in the place of the fall. Besides, the character of damage and the radiation
background at the explosion epicentre are substantially different from the
aftereffects of the fall of a meteorite, believe the scientists. The meteorite
version is also disproved by the fact that edges of meteorites are usually fused,
and fragments of the celestial body have a dense metallic structure. The
fragments found by the scientists resemble sandstone and crumble in hands,
one of the expedition participants Vadim Chernobrov, head of the Kosmopoisk
research association, told RIA Novosti.

According to him, some data, however, fail to confirm the comet theory. The
local water was found to contain tritium, a special kind of radioactive hydrogen,
and that is rather strange for comets, thinks Chernobrov.

Although near midnight on September 24, 2002, the flying object above Eastern
Siberia was registered, according to the US Defence Department, by an American
military satellite, members of the Russian expedition do not rule out
that they deal with a rare natural phenomenon - a giant ball lightning or an
ejection of special subterranean minerals that disintegrate into water and gas.
Final conclusions will be made later. The investigations on the site of the
blast are continuing.

As estimated by specialists, it was an explosion of such a force that if the
supposed fire-ball had fallen on Moscow, half of the Russian capital would have
turned into desert, a nd the other half into ruins.

[meteorite-list] Re: Vitim Meteorite Was Probably A Comet

2003-07-25 Thread Ron Baalke

I'm not convinced that an impact site has been found in Siberia. An expedition to the
area found some burnt trees and some rocks claimed to be meteorites. The rocks would
be key evidence for an impact site if they are confirmed to be meteorites.
However, there has been no such confirmation yet, and have had more than ample
time to do so by now. The burnt trees may just be from a natural forest fire.
The descriptions in this article indicates that the rocks are *not* meteorites.

[meteorite-list] web site updated and few questions

2003-07-25 Thread The Earth's Memory

Dear list members,

we want to let you know that we did update our web site,
you will find a new selection of historical specimens
as well as the new Iron Rich Diogenite discussed few days ago.
www.meteorite.fr/en/forsale.htm
Don't forget to ask us any of your wishes before buying anywhere else,
we are the source for most part of the rare new samples and you'll
see that our customers price/service policy worth it. Most part of
our inventory is not on line so always drop us a mail to compare before
deciding.

As the meteorite meeting is going on in Munster, we would like
to know what kind of propositions have been done about the relationship
scientist/dealers. Any ideas ?

For us one important point is that without the prospectors/dealer’s
investments it wouldn't
have been possible to have access to all these new important samples. No lab
could have funded so many expeditions ! As the declaration needs 20%/20gr
the
scientifical community has access to major specimens for free witch helped
to
increase the global publications and knowledge on these space/time
travelers:
meteorites, our shared passion !

Another important problem for institutions is that more countries are
discovering
the interest about meteoritics. Some of these countries just realize that
major
samples have been discovered on their land... they will now begin to ask for
restitution of their material... up to now the Nom Com did accept to declare
meteorites anonymously... then it seems that the liability will fall down on
them.
Imagine Libya or Morocco asking back the value of all the DaG and NWA to the
Museums whom
own the 20%/20Gr deposit !!! It's their right as none of these rocks have
been exported legally !
They surely will win as the international laws on national treasure already
gave examples on
mineral, fossils and artifacts.
And what about the private collectors ? Will we be oblige to give back all
the material
where we have no proper valid certificates ??

Dr Huss was asking the opinion on several points to be discussed publicly to
vote
the future Nom Com policy. Did some of you already know what kind of
subjects were
discussed ?

We wish you the best from sunny France

Re: [meteorite-list] Vitim Meteorite Was Probably A Comet

2003-07-25 Thread Marcia Swanson
Although near midnite on September 24, 2002, the flying object was
registered, according to U.S. Defence Department..

Dear Ron and List,
Again, keep in mind that I am asking about a possible theory or
theories, considering the comparison of unconfirmed data, in all to be
mentioned events.
I saw a televison account with actual picture of the aftermath of the
alleged Tugunsta Asteroid. The pictures I've seen of the area in the
alleged Vitim Meteorite, were almost identical. Specifically, in the
evidence of large area of burnt trees. ( Where does zero-velocity fit
into the fiery devestation?) Anybody? Please advise?
Also, I could't help but wonder in comparison, about a theory I had
heard about in the event of The Great Chicago Fire, October 8, 1871.
Mrs. O'Leary's Cow took the rap for this one, but one state away
(north), in Wisconsin, in the city of Peshtigo, on the exact same day as
Chicago, Illinois Fire, that devestated a large portion of that city,
Pestigo, a lumber mill town in Northern Wisconsin, and miles of lumber
country were also devestated by a fire that surrounded the city of
Pestigo, and forced every living thing into the Green Bay Harbor, (Great
Lakes) to attempt survival. There was a larger fatality rate in the
Pestigo Fire, but was upsurped by the importance of the Chicago Fire,
thus the media focussed on it, at the time. In both cases it was
proclaimed that it had been an especially dry hot summer.
A television documentary, (and fact that I visited Pestigo Fire Museum,
while up there), gave evidense of fireballs being reported as seen,
previous to both fires, with a possible 3rd. fire somewhere in
Minnesota, that same day, also with previous reported fireball
sightings.
Much the same as fire devestation as in Tugunsta, and Vitim. events.
If anyone has heard or can enlighten me about the verification of
fireball sightings , or any info. on the fires in Chicago, Il., and
Peshtio,Wi., on October 8, 1871, please contact me off-list if that is
necessary, because of the possible controversy, and Bandwidth situation
. Best Regards, Marcie
