Re: [meteorite-list] Brahin - legit?

2003-07-29 Thread tett
Phil,

Brahin is a beautiful pallasite and right now extremely cheap. A must buy
for all new comers.

That said, many specimens are unstable and in a year can become crusted with
rust. Not pretty and very distressing. Please ask your potential seller if
they know how stable the piece is. If it has NOT been cut for over a year
or NOT recently ground and polished and is still nice and shiny then the
piece should be stable. Even after a year, however, I have seen pieces
start to rust.

This problem is Lawrensite disease and has been discussed at length in this
forum.

So, try and get a slice that is as stable as possible and regularly inspect
the slice for rust. You can also oil it up or even give it some of the
special rust inhibiters advertised. If you start to see rust then
immediately give it a stabilizing treatment. I can email you off list on
how to do this. You can also check the archives.

Cheers and good luck,

Mike Tettenborn

 Hi John,

 I saw finmet's auction...thanks for the
recommendation. The other two I was considering are:

 Thanks,

  Phil,
The Brahin you see listed on Ebay by the seller
  finmet is genuine
meteorite. Like everything else the Russians get
  their hands on, the price
of Brahin was driven almost into the ground by
  saturating the market with
too many specimens at the same time. A good deal
  for the collectora
nice pallasite for less than $2.00 a gram.

Well, it's a little difficult to say "yes" to every possible specimen at any given moment, from so many different dealers, but I can't remember seeing an ebay Brahin offering recently, which appeared to be questionable. Pallasites are so unique in appearance that it would be prohibitively difficult to fabricate or substitute something (which makes the Shirokovsky situation all the more remarkable).

Always a good idea to look for the "IMCA" logo in a meteorite dealer's auction - the International Meteorite Collector's Association is a largely-self-policing organization, and its members are dedicated to authenticity.

I heard recently that
some major pieces or Brahin were recently discovered
within the last few years. I picked up a 1 kilo from finmet
last year when there were some real big chunks on Ebay.

The other information I got, and this may
be hearsay, is that the Brahin strewn field is
supposedly also very near, or even partly inside the no admittance
zone circle drawn around Chernobyl since the nuclear disaster there years ago.
Supposedly, the diameter of this hot zone has been reduced recently as it is
not as dangerous as previously thought to be. This is allowing prospectors into
the area again where new finds are being made. Again, I have no real authoritive
source for this, it is what I have heard from other
newsgroups and friends. Can
anyone shed more light on this?

Hello to all,

at the moment Id buy Brahins from a reliable seller,
usually all IMCA members are that...;- Also Finmet on
eBay have sure pure and fresh pieces. (Not an AD.)

The point of view is, there is still 150 kg:s of Shirokovsky
pseudo left, and if you are not familiar with Brahin and the
seller is unknown, it seems to me, there is a possibility to
have a piece of this stuff, not a big one, but anyway.

Just my thoughts, but if I had 150 kg:s Shirokovsky in my
garage...well, before to build a nice statue with that material,
I sure may had some other thoughts too...;-

take care,

pekka
