Re: [Micronet] [Announce] Update on mailing list migrations

2016-04-29 Thread Ian Crew
Hi all:

Just to follow up on this/close this out, it turns out Mike had a browser
window open with his personal Gmail account, not his Berkeley one. Once he
switched to his Berkeley account, the Groups showed up fine.

Cheers,

Ian

Re: [Micronet] LaTeX to Word doc Conversion

2016-04-11 Thread Ian Crew
http://www.wordtolatex.com sounds like the sort of thing you are looking for
(check out http://www.wordtolatex.com/upload), but in the other direction:
Word-to-LaTeX. I wonder if they might be able to do what you’re looking for,
which is essentially the same thing, but in reverse…..

Googling for "latex to word converter
<https://www.google.com/search?client=safari=en=latex+to+word+converter=UTF-8=UTF-8>”
also turns up a bunch of other options.

Re: [Micronet] [Announce] Adobe Flash Player Multiple Zero-Day Vulnerabilities (CVE-2016-1010)

2016-03-11 Thread Ian Crew
Hi all:

It may not be appropriate for everyone, but I removed flash (Windows
<https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows.html>,
Mac OS
<https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-mac-os.html>)
from my machine over a year ago, and I really don’t miss it. For those rare
times I do need it, I just open the page in Chrome, which includes a built-in
Flash interpreter (that seems to have fewer security issues than the Adobe
plugins).

Something to consider as a response to the continuing litany of zero-day Flash
exploits…

Cheers,

Ian

I was the person behind @UCBCalMail for most of the outage. I spent ~16-17
hours a day for 2 weeks on Twitter. I think that that’s enough for a lifetime!
My personal favorite response to that effort:

Re: [Micronet] Weird Minor Bug in OS 10.10.3

2015-04-15 Thread Ian Crew
From what I've read, it does seem to be a bug that was introduced in 10.10.3
related to accessing system reports when the scrollbars are set to be always
on. For example, see
http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/yosemite/index.html#d15apr2015 for
another report.

Cheers,

Ian

That article escaped my Googling. Thanks for pointing it out.

I think, however, it's a little more complicated than what
they describe. I looked at two Macs, one running 10.10.1 and one
running 10.10.2, both with always scroll set, and the problem did
not occur. In both cases, without making any other changes, simply
installing the 10.10.3 upgrade caused the problem to occur.

Re: [Micronet] Map Google Drive on Windows and Mac

2015-04-13 Thread Ian Crew
Hi Jonas:

You might want to check out ExpanDrive http://expandrive.com/, which claims
to do this for Google and Box (as well as a number of other services that
aren't centrally supported on campus). I've heard good things about it from
people I trust, but I don't have personal experience with it. It is commercial
software.

As a potential alternative, if you use Box instead of Drive, you can connect to
Box with WebDAV, which will give you what you're looking for, albeit somewhat
slowly. Depending on your needs, that may be sufficient (and the
price--free--is right). To access it via WebDAV, you'll need to set an
external password
https://kb.berkeley.edu/campus-shared-services/page.php?id=27032 the see the
WebDAV instructions
https://support.box.com/hc/en-us/articles/200519748-Does-Box-support-WebDAV-.
Note that the instructions to use Your Box account email address should
follow the calne...@berkeley.edu format, if your CalNet ID differs from your
primary @berkeley.edu email address.

See http://kb.berkeley.edu/page.php?id=44390 for a summary of the different
collaboration platforms here on campus and the strengths of each.

Hope that helps,

Ian

I appreciate any comments or suggestions.

Re: [Micronet] TrueCrypt

2015-03-13 Thread Ian Crew
Hi Sergey:

There are campus-supplied and supported services that support both MSSEI PL1
(Box, Google Drive, and bCourses Project Sites) and MSSEI PL2 (CalShare) data,
which may remove the need to use per-file encryption tools at all. See
http://kb.berkeley.edu/page.php?id=44390 for a comparison among those 4 tools.

Hope that's helpful,

Ian

I’m not sure about the notification process, but one thing that’s given me and my wife a bunch of comfort in this age of security breaches is to have a security freeze on our accounts with the credit reporting agencies. \'a0\
(My wife will chuckle when she reads this, as it took her FOREVER to convince me of this. Since I've heard of a couple of my friends facing real or potential ID theft problems lately, I thought I'd post something here.)\
\'a0\
One of the least used but most powerful tools for preventing identity theft is to put a security freeze on your account with the three major credit reporting agencies. Personally, I think the security freezes are more effective than any of the credit monitoring services they try to sell you, as it works to prevent the problem before it occurs rather than working to notify you after something has happened.\
\'a0\
They generally don't want people doing this, as it makes it much less likely that people will sign up for new credit (especially of the get it today, pay nothing for 18 months, DO IT NOW! variety), so it's hard to find out about. Still, it lets me sleep a lot better at night, so I thought I'd share what I know here:\

for details on how to do this from each of the three agencies.\'a0\
\'a0\
Two other things we learned (I'm not sure if it's mentioned in the pages above):\
1) For this to be an effective protection, you need to freeze your credit with all 3 agencies.\
\'a0\
2) The credit ratings between spouses are often mixed, so in order to be effective, both members of a couple must place the security freeze on their credit at all 3 agencies. I'm not sure about domestic partners.\
Here's how things work once you've locked your credit:\
\'a0\
Normally (if you don't have a security freeze on your account), the process for getting new credit (like a new credit card, a car loan, a mortgage, etc.) goes something like:\
- You decide that you want a new credit card, car loan, mortgate, or whatever.\
- You give the vendor your credit details (Name, Address, SSN, etc.)\
- The vendor contacts one of the credit reporting agencies (Experian, Equifax, or Trans Union) and requests a credit report\
- The vendor makes a decision about whether or not to grant you credit.\
\'a0\
Once you've instituted a freeze, the process goes like (the extra step is in bold):\
- You decide that you want a new credit card, car loan, mortgate, or whatever.\

Re: [Micronet] Blank screen on Airbears login?

2014-11-13 Thread Ian Crew
I’d suggest doing it the other way around: For me, I have eduroam set as my
most-preferred WiFi network http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13797 followed by
AirBears2, then AirBears. That means I effectively never have to bother with
entering my CalNet passphrase just to get on the network….
